GOP Congressman: ABC = ‘All Barack Channel’
June 24, 2009 4:52 PM
ABC News’ Dean Norland reports: Members of the Media Fairness Caucus, a group of House Republicans concerned about a liberal bias in the media, took ABC News to task for its coverage of health care reform on its various broadcasts today.
At a Capitol Hill news conference, caucus chairman Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, explained, “ABC is devoting all of their newscasts today to the president’s health care plan – morning, noon and night. It’s going to culminate tonight in a town hall meeting from the White House with a handpicked audience, and, of course, with the president getting the last word. That doesn’t seem like fair and objective coverage to me.”
Smith said ABC’s coverage was like a rigged football game.
“The president has home field advantage, there’s only one referee -- and that’s ABC News -- and the opposing team is not allowed on the field.”
Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., said that ABC seems to be rushing to become the “All Barack Channel”.
The group sent a letter to ABC News President David Westin Tuesday. Westin responded:
“We will include a variety of perspectives coming from private individuals asking the President questions and taking issue with him, as they see fit.”
“Sadly, some inside government and within the private sector see every issue as material for a sort of political high theatre, to be used to gain votes or energize political bases or simply to raise funds. I would have thought that a subject as important as the health care received by the American people would rise above this sorry spectacle. Our citizens need and deserve more. We are proud to be making a serious effort to go beyond mere punditry or stylized, bipolar debate; we are proud to work for a network and a company willing to devote valuable airtime to serious consideration of a subject so worthy,” Westin wrote.

This is absurd. Less than a year ago they were whipping up fear among the base that liberals wanted to enforce the Fairness Doctrine to kill the wildly unbalanced conservative media. Now ABC can't have an exclusive interview session with the president without having a Republican in the room? Please. FoxNews almost lived in the Whitehouse as they did the Magnificent Life of George through the Stoic Warrior Review of Rumsfeld. And anyone with a brain who watched the primay debate moderated by Stephanopolis has to be out of their mind to claim he's in the tank for Obama.
Besides, if all Obama says is true then WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? Are Republicans scared of not being able to shout over him for an hour and make up lies like "If you're over 65 you can't get an artificial hip in Canada!" (Seriously, even though it's documented fact the MAJORITY of artificial hips go to the 65+ crowd I've heard right wingers keep trying to push this, and similar, lies.)

Hey jhw539, stop being so shrill with your partisan politics. We're talking about 20% of the American GDP to be diverted from the private sector to the already bloated government sector. This is a 3 trillion dollar gamble with no real idea if such a monstrosity will work in a country of this size. A major news network like ABC should have allowed for dissenting voices and so that all sides can be heard. That's the American way (or used to be).

jhw, and I guess just because Obama says it that makes it true. Kind of like when he said america invented the car. lol.

And we all know Obama would never try to mislead us or rush us into anything huh jwh? It kills me how you guys buy into everything he says and hold it up as truth even when he flip flops you guys change your mind with him. Dems=joke.

Rep Smith is right. I have yet to see ABC ask this man a serious question. Let alone the other networks excepting Fox, which the President has no intention to revisit.
ABC has been its own worst enemy with public confidence and the farther left it leans, the lower its ratings.

Are you foxies kidding me?? Fox did this many times for W.
If the government just ruins everything, and the insurance companys aren't reaming us, What do you have to fear from just hearing?? No not change, don't take our ways to steal from the public.
I would like to also point out that of the banks on the stress test list that didn't take any tarp money was Ge. Home of the constant attaches of fox. Just out of curiosity, How much money did Newscorp get from the government prior to them making any money?
I think it was over 500 million. Just an observation.
Oh and all black channel.... Would you "representatives" please start representing, and also engage brain before engaging mouth. I am not black and I'm offended by that.

Mike,
Just out of curiosity, when and for what reason did Fox News do this for President Bush without letting any one have paid commercials provide another version of the story? Also, why isn't ABC, NBC or CBS doing this same thing regarding the horrific cap and trade bill that will be voted on this Friday? In case any one is interested, you might want to check out the proposed legislation and the thousands of dollars in additional energy costs to each household this bill will create. Then it might be a really good idea to call your Congressman and tell them to just say NO. If this is not stopped, we all will be living like the State of California - bankrupt.
