Palin vs. Letterman
June 11, 2009 8:11 AM
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports:
Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, are swinging back at David Letterman, after the talk-show host made the Alaska governor and her family the focus of a series of off-color jokes.
Letterman’s “Top 10” list Tuesday night focused on Palin’s recent trip to New York, and included several cracks: “Bought makeup from Bloomingdale's to update her 'slutty flight attendant' look,” Letterman said.
But it was a line in Letterman’s monologue that set off a firestorm: “One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.”
Palin was in New York with her 14-year-old daughter, Willow.
The line prompted an angry response from the Palins. In a statement posted on Facebook and distributed to the press yesterday, the governor said:
“Concerning Letterman's comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he'd ever dare make such comments about anyone else's daughter): 'Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands - that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone's daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.' ”
Todd Palin added: “Any 'jokes' about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too.”
Letterman responded last night by saying that the joke was aimed at 18-year-old Bristol Palin, not Willow: “We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]... and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman said.
“These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.... Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No."
Letterman also invited the Alaska governor to come on his show.
UPDATE: Per ABC News' Kate Snow: Gov. Palin pushed back at Letterman again this morning, issuing a statement via Palin PAC spokesperson Meghan Stapelton.
"The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show," Stapelton said in an email to ABC News. "Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman."

Did he ever say "I'm sorry" I think not. Typical liberal.

Letterman speaks for ALL dems and he's a disgusting sexist who knew EXACTLY which daughter he was talking about. Is he even still on the air? He probably shouldn't be after this classless "joke". It's time he get a wake up call and walking papers.
Posted by: afkbrad | Jun 11, 2009 8:39:01 AM
notanobamafan - But, but... everytime Pres. Obama speaks in another country you guys say he's always apologizing like a liberal. Which is it? See you try and have it both ways, like a typical conservative! FYI, I heard the joke, never did I think it was about the younger daughter!

David Letterman and Katie Couric have to keep trying to destroy Sarah Palin. She is a strong conservative woman who live her life according to her convictions and this scares them. Why? who knows. Do they not live their lives according to their convictions? Probably. Why do the liberals hate her so. Its like it personal. Even if you don't agree with her politicly why try to destroy her at every turn? Many people don't agree with Obama but have you ever heard anyone say something even remotely close to what Letterman said about Obama's girls? NO Way. All hell would break loose. It would be all over the msm. Is this? not really. Since it's Sarah Palin the msm thinks it okay. You get "Oh he's a comedian" No matter. He crossed the line on this one. "I'm sorry" would go a long way.

David
Fire the writer who wrote the joke and move on - The more this issue, which is bad for you, surrounds your show, you will lose in the ratings game - Learn from Katie and Dan, just say you are sorry and fire the writer who wrote the joke and move on - The last thing you need is a bunch of women protesting in front of your show, which would get more negative press, and you will lose even more - Just say you are sorry and don't dance around it as you did last night, and move on and you will survive.

Had Rush Limbaugh made such a joke, all the Hollywood crowd would be demanding that he be fired. What an outcry there would be if such jokes were made about Obama's daughter. Media bias could not be more clearly demonstrated.

The man corrected his mistake, explained his comment and pretty much hit the nail on the head. If morals run in families it won't be long before Willow is pregnant and they are parading her around like another immaculate conception.

the jokes were part of his top-10 list, and were about average for the top 10. about half of them were funny. the palins are desperately looking for any way to stay in the national spotlight, despite what they say to the contrary. when you've been replaced by newt, that can't say much for your popularity in your own party. the election said enough about her popularity with the rest of the country.

OK - so vulgar, inappropriate sexual comments about a young woman are acceptable? Is this Letterman's excuse? Calling Sarah Palin a "slut" is acceptable? Imagine such a demeaning rant aimed at the Obama's? Shame on CBS and Letterman, and shame on ABC for not reporting the full story from the beginning!

Letterman is an old pervert, in everyway. Time for him to move on and get someone funny in there. He not only offended Repulican's, and Palin fans, but also pro lifers, anyone that had a teen pregnancy, parents and relatives of a pregnant teen, anyone ever raped as a teen, and even some baseball fans.

letterman is a loud, boorish oaf. His tasteless "jokes" about the Palins reminded me why I never watched his shows in the first place.

So its wrong to make sexual jokes about someone's 14 year old daughter, but its okay to make sexual jokes about someone's 18 year old daughter. Am I the only one to see the hypocrisy here? This is not a liberal/conservative or democrat/republican thing. This is about someone in the entertainment industry pandering to our increasingly amoral values for a quick laugh (by the way, Letterman doesn't actually write any of these jokes). The solution is simple...stop watching him. Any apology he offered would be completely insincere.

Try the truth, We don't think Obama should only apoligize. Sometimes he should stand up and BE PROUD of America. So far not so much of that. Anyway, I heard the joke and thought it was about Bristol also, doesn't matter. He never should have went there. How about if he made a joke like that about Michelle Obama? What would you say? you would be screaming and demanding an apology and she is a grown woman. come on you dems are the pros of double standards so don't try and tell me conservatives want it both ways. You, being a women should be angry at the way the media treats Palin no matter if you agree with her politics or not. Do they even come close to treating anyone else this way. Search your heart and be honest. No they don't. This woman has been hammered enough. By the way, no one ever gets personal with Obama and his family like they have done with Palin. Somethings should be off limits. But I guess that only applys to Obama and the rest of the far left liberals. Don't waste your time trying to convince anyone other wise. We (conservatives) don't have blinders on and praise everything that this admin and the msm have done like some people. It's really not healthy to worship one party so much. People have a brain. Lets use it to question, debate and conclude. We call all disagree but there is no reason for vile attacks and this was one.

Apparently the Christian right leaning Sarah didn't drum the ideology of abstinence into the head of her daughter well enough. One has to wonder why the daughter wasn't using contraceptives. Was Sarah thinking that her daughter was going to remain absolutely celibate? We know that Levi wasn't the kind of guy to wear protection. The Palins are clearly projecting a double standard.

Why is Letterman asking Palin to come on the show after calling her look "slutty" and talking trash about her 14 year old daughter? What an idiot! No self respecting woman and mother would put herself in that position merely to help Letterman's ratings. What should happen though is Todd Palin needs to visit Dave for a little "man to man talk".

"Had Rush Limbaugh made such a joke, all the Hollywood crowd would be demanding that he be fired."
Every word that passes Rush's lips is a joke...Give us a break and listen to the monologue instead of the distorted puke coming from the Palin Camp!

I'm not a fan of the Palins but the remark was off-base (no matter what daughter.) Even the "slutty" comment was beyond pale.

Letterman showed why he is not hosting the tonight show.
Posted by: drmtp | Jun 11, 2009 9:21:59 AM
What a ignoramous. Letterman is so irrelevant, and that is the joke. Would he say Michelle looks like a slut? Would he like it if we said his wife is a slut? There are jokes, which can be appreciated, and then there's personal attacks cloaked as a joke. When I was a kid, I always thought that Polish, Italian, Jewish, and Black jokes were tasteless. If you poke fun at yourself, that can be funny. When you poke fun at someone else's appearance, that's crossing the line. Like a typical idiot, he doesn't have a clue...

As a Hoosier boy myself, I used to love Letterman. He used to be so funny and laid back, esp. when he was host of late night. As he got older, he became overtly liberal and pollarizing. I am no Palin fan, but to even contemplate a joke about a 14 year old girl getting knocked up shows that he is probably a pervert. I doubt he would ever say that about Obama's girls. I stopped watching him long ago. his show sucks too. I can only hope Conan does not follow this route as he ages.
