Sanford: ‘I Thought I Would Resign…’
June 29, 2009 5:25 PM
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: In an open letter to friends and supporters, Gov. Mark Sanford writes that he thought about resigning from office as his extramarital affair became public – but says he was convinced to stay on by messages he received from “a long list of close friends.”
“Immediately after all this unfolded last week I had thought I would resign -- as I believe in the military model of leadership and when trust of any form is broken one lays down the sword,” writes Sanford, R-S.C., in a message posted on his Website and circulated via Facebook and Twitter.
“A long list of close friends have suggested otherwise -- that for God to really work in my life I shouldn’t be getting off so lightly. While it would be personally easier to exit stage left, their point has been that my larger sin was the sin of pride. They contended that in many instances I may well have held the right position on limited government, spending or taxes -- but that if my spirit wasn't right in the presentation of those ideas to people in the General Assembly, or elsewhere, I could elicit the response that I had at many times indeed gotten from other state leaders.”
Sanford’s message says he was writing to “apologize and ask for your forgiveness.”
“Well beyond the personal consequences within my own family, I know that at so many different levels my actions have upset, offended and disappointed friends and supporters and for this I am most sorry,” he writes. “As I mentioned in last week's press conference, I've always believed God's laws were there to protect us from ourselves, and what has transpired over this last week vividly illustrates the damage that comes personally, and to those you love and respect, in doing otherwise.”

Just so I understand, is Gov. Sanford arguing that if he had been faithful to his wife(a remarkable woman, by the way) he would have more successful in convincing the S.C. legislature not to accept stiumulus money? Are you kidding? Even Gov. Palin
wouldn't fall for this logic.

With Friends like Mark Sanford has who needs enemies. Now it's has nothing to do with Mark and Maria it's all about the greed and money that Sanford is giving friends. Jenny how has to live with a man who doesn't love her and will always love his soul mate Maria.

I live in SC and Sanford's goose is cooked. He can no longer serve effectively not that he ever has. This just shows the arrogance and irresponsiblity of this so called Man.

Let's see - Kennedy had loads of affairs - some with a woman he shared with a mobster. He didn't resign. So why should Sanford? We all adore Kennedy. Now, Sanford is more like Kennedy. Until someone condemns Kennedy for his messing around - he was out on a boat with "friends" while Jackie was having her miscarriage and didn't get back for 3 days - they cannot ask Sanford to resign. Eisenhower didn't resign. Neither did Roosevelt who died at his mistresses home. So, let's stop slinging mud at parties. There is nothing dumber than an old man with a young chickie giving him smiles. Look at Pavoratti. Mel Gibson? Clinton? I also wonder how many of these situations have been "set up" to discredit the poor fools. Sanford has proven to be a good governor - and that is what counts. Pelosi brought her husband to Italy with her to see the Pope - using taxpayer dollars. Who complained? She had Rosa DiLauro - was her hubby with her? Stan is tight with Immanuel (he lives with them). Did Larson bring his wife? Did they prorate the hotel bill? Did Dodd pay for his wife to go to the $30,000 a couple fund raiser in CA? Or did he do 5 minutes of Senate business and use our taxpayer money? We have some rotten apples - and oranges - in Congress. Sanford is small potatoes when compared to Pelosi and her gang.

"as I believe in the military model of leadership and when trust of any form is broken one lays down the sword" ... until you don't.
Just like you believe in the sanctity of marriage ... until you don't.
Hypocrite through and through.

Let's cut to the chase here: The man left his state for days at a time without anybody knowing where he was leaving his state vulnerable . He probably spent lots of money that wasn't his. Most of all he turned his back on his wife and kids. This man is lowest of the low. Anybody that would defend him is right on his level.

Typical republican "Bull Crap"

The man is an egotist....that is obvious...the right thing to do would be to resign and minimize the embarrassment to his state....but he won't....How he expects to be an effective governor is beyond comprehension...

You know Linda Mae, I agree that Governor Sanford's personal life is way overblown. Here's the REAL problems: conditions in rural South Carolina schools are appalling - early six in ten rural students live in poverty. Barely half South Carolina’s rural high school students graduate, the lowest rate in the nation.
And South Carolina's economic development is totally obsolete, based on the antique industrial factory model - it's why the state's unemployment rate is 11.6%. Those jobs are GONE and they ain't coming back.
And SC politics are the same - obsolete - based on a good old boy aristocratic attitude of having the poor people working for you.
Governor Sanford is busy untangling his messy personal life in an alternate universe where poverty, jobs, schools, and kids' futures are not important. South Carolina: get rid of this guy and bring your state into this century!

Sanford suffers from the insanity of lust. There is no other explanation for his continuing expressions of love for Chapur, which undoubtedly strike his faithful wife like so many cuts to the heart.
His worth as a public servant is irrelevant at this point; one cannot lead from a position of lunacy.

Sanford is a good governor, that's what count. Why resign?
To be honest, Janny is a remarkable woman, but, she lacks attraction, she's kind of worn out. Sanford is starved for a soul-mate. I found it utterly hypocrite not to make space for a soul-mate!
Raising kids is a virtue, but, what's wrong to have a soul-mate along with a wife? There is obviously space for more! Jenny is a courageous, but, mean person! Open your heart!
No one should be deprived to have a enjoyable and lovable life! Sanford & Jenny are very intelligent couple. And fits perfectly where there is a blank!
Why deprive yourself and live a 'cheated' life! We are a bunch of hypocrite! Let's get over with this fracas, I love Maria Shapur Belen, she is a wonderful soul-mate, she's truly a love, she's here to stay. No one can force, Jenny is a hypocrite!

Linda Mae, the difference is Democrats don't go around shanting family values and moral high ground as your GOP does and the reason Sanford is being asked to resign is not because of his affair but his malfeasence of his duties as Governor by AWOL. Remember Clinton wasn't impeached because of Monica but because he lied which not only has Sanford lied to the voters of SC but his wife and family time and time again.
