Fmr. Congresswoman Intercepted by Israeli Navy

July 01, 2009 4:38 PM

ABC News' Kirit Radia and Matthew Larotonda report: Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (of Capitol Hill scuffle fame) been detained by the Israeli navy after a vessel carrying her and members of the Free Gaza group was intercepted en route to Gaza yesterday.

According to Free Gaza’s website the Israeli navy, "forcibly boarded the Free Gaza boat ‘Spirit of Humanity’ and kidnapped 21 human rights workers and journalists who were on their way to deliver much needed humanitarian and reconstruction supplies to besieged Gaza."

The ship was then escorted to an Israeli port although it may still be in transit, according to the US State Department. An Israeli naval blockade prohibits unauthorized travel to Gaza.

On the boat, according to Free Gaza, were McKinney and Irish Nobel peace laureate Mairead Maguire.

State Dept. spokesman Ian Kelly would not confirm the identity of any American passengers, but said the US is in contact with Israeli authorities to assure all 21 passengers are safe. It is unknown how many are Americans.

"We can confirm that the Israeli navy did arrest those on board this -- the ship," Kelly told reporters today. "We're seeking consular access to the American citizens who are on board."

Ms. McKinney was the Democratic Representative from Georgia until 2007 and the Green Party’s presidential nominee in 2008.

Set Her Free...NOW dammit

we provide billions of dollars to israel in overt aide and billions more in covert and trade concessions. they have no right to interfere in any way with U.S. citizens, they owe us there very existence. It's our weapons they use, whether in legitimate defense or when they go crazy dumping our cluster munitions on innocents. Their arrogance and self-righteousness needs a big attitude adjustment. Let's pull the financial plug on these mooches, they're a wealthy country and don't need to be sponging off of us anymore, and we don't need to be propping up their murderous and human rights abusing government.

One of the few people that was actually investigating the 2.3 trillion dollars that went "unaccounted for" in the Pentagon budget pre 911... And the Democrats have the gall to criticize her for sending aid to refugees and citizens under siege. The moral bankrupcy of the Democrats (covering for the Republicans) knows NO bounds!!! Truly PATHETIC!!! You all should be ashamed that you sold out your principles to appease those in power. What do you gain when you capitulate and do the bidding of those who are diametricaly opposed to you. Bush couldn't have done half the things he did if Pelosi and the Democrats stood up to him. Now they cheer Obama continuing the same polices and like lap dogs you critcize those who don't appear to be on "your team." No wonder things are getting worse. How can they improve when neither the public or the meida hold anybody accountable for their votes or their actions. Alot of folks need to point the finger not at Bush, not at the Democrats but AT THEMSELVES... for letting both sides rob the country blind, and get away with it with the weasly retort: "Well, but... the other guy did it (is worse) too!!!

Israel should vigorously interrogate her & then put her and the others on trial. They have to learn that Israel is not playing games.

I thought the Somali's were the only pirates operating in the middle east. I guess Israel considers the entire Mediterranean to be theirs.

Keep her. She's worthless

Where they unaware of the blockade, seems like the rest of the world new about it. Perhaps it's just a publicity stunt.

I'd happily trade McKinney for a half-dozen utterly worthless blog posters I can think of.

I don't know Bob, do you mean the "illegal" blockade that keeps the people in Gaza as "Ghetto" prisoners of the Israeli's?

Posted by: JR | Jul 1, 2009 10:44:15 PM

What it doesn't make clear is whether or not the boat was in Israeli waters. If an Israeli boat tried to land without permission here in Charleston I'm sure our Navy would be a little upset, too. It's scary to think that they could have treated it like the USS Liberty in 1967 and shot it to pieces. Those darn Israelis.

Cynthia McKinney has a history of thinking she is above it all. As an example, when she actually attacked a Capitol Hill guard who insisted she pass through the metal detctor like everyone else (she was really peaved when he admitted he didn't know she was a congress woman). She also ignored campaign law in Georgia by passing out her fliers withing 100 yards of a polling station. She's just above it all and can't be bothered with the rules. I hope she's charged, but better handcuff her; she's known to attack.

Why doesn't Ms.McKinney use her unfluence to persuade the Gazan "government" to stop sending rockets against Innocent Israeli civillians?

Posted by: MM | Jul 2, 2009 3:39:09 PM

We can be sure that those who are in the custody of the Israel,s will be treated better than Corporal Shalit who was kidnapped by Gaza and who refuse to give any information as to his whereabouts.

Didn't this exact same thing happen a few months ago?

Posted by: Mark | Jul 2, 2009 10:16:58 PM

Really...the nerve of her trying to deliver medical supplies and crayons for kids to Gaza.

How dare she !!!
