GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Backs Sotomayor
July 17, 2009 1:23 PM
ABC News’ David Chalian reports:
One day after President Obama campaigned for his opponent, the New Jersey Republican gubernatorial candidate, former US Attorney Chris Christie, today endorsed Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court.
"After watching and listening to Judge Sotomayor's performance at the confirmation hearings this week, I am confident that she is qualified for the position of Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Elections have consequences,” Christie said in a statement.
”While Judge Sotomayor would not have been my choice, President Obama has used his opportunity to fill a seat on the Supreme Court by choosing a nominee who has more than proven her capability, competence and ability. . . . This is a historic moment and her inspiring success story should not only make the Latino community proud, but all Americans."
Christie’s move suggests that Gov. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., is not the only candidate who understands Obama's popularity, and the president’s shrewd political play in nominating Sotomayor. His GOP opponent has embraced some of the Obama appeal in a very blue state, while continuing to hammer away at Gov. Corzine.

Obama has just flattened the GOP on this...

I believe Sotomater is a racial judge and it shows on her. In the firemen's case she was wrong in her decision and she has made several wrong decisions in cases. The democrats don't care what decisions she made as long as she is a democrat. Obama chose her because he wanted assurnace on the Latino vote in the next election not because he likes her. Obama likes himself only and never looks at the looks at their fault. People in his administration that didn't pay their taxes should not have been chosen. And his world tour was a vacation not business. You don't take your wife and children on business. This has been the worst corrupt underhanded democratic election in American history. Let's hope we can rid ourselves of Pelosi, Reid, Durbin, and Dean if he gets back in politics. Kennedy and Reid should retire and call it a day. They are too old. Plus the supreme court justice system should have an age limit so they can retire at 65 giving a younger person a chance to become on the supreme court.

I don't know how Christie or anyone could agree not to oppose Sotomayer after hearing the firemen's story. Is she racial. I would take bets on it that she is. And it shows in her decisions. All the republicans and some of the democrats should oppose her nomination however knowing the democrats she will be voted in. The democrats were not that nice to Burris and didn't want him as the Illinois senator even though he was not a part of Blogo's decisions. That's how the democrats operate. Congress and the House are a total disaster since they won it. I am hoping some of the republicans win to take over the house. Now is the time for the republicans to shape up ahead of time and get their candidates ready. Palin already has a website called PAC and is taking in donations. Romney also has one.

Maeiann, too bad you know little to nothing about the Second Court's decision in Ricci vs New Haven ("the fireman's case"). The Second Court ruled in accordance with the law and precedence established by the Supreme Court. The current Supreme Court decided that the law really didn't mean what it said and the previous decisions were wrong.
If you have read cases decided by Ms Sotomayor you would find that she is fairly middle of the road, if anything, leaning slightly to the conservative.

I'm pretty sure Christie just sealed the deal in NJ :-/

Someone in the progressive circle should force Christie to denounce Rush limbaugh attack on Judge S'mayor that way he will show his mainstream streak. Until then, he is just pandering to the hispanic vote.
