‘Roe’ of Roe v. Wade Arrested at Sotomayor Hearings
July 13, 2009 4:25 PM
ABC News’ Rick Klein and Jan Crawford Greenburg report: Norma McCorvey, the plaintiff in the famous Roe v. Wade abortion case who is now an anti-abortion activist, was one of four protesters arrested for disrupting today’s opening day of Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings, according to the US Capitol Police.
McCorvey, 61, was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct-disruption of Congress, in the wake of one of several outbursts that temporarily delayed today’s proceedings, according to a news release from the Capitol Police.
McCorvey was “Jane Roe” in the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case establishing a constitutional right for women to get abortions.
But in recent years she’s become an outspoken opponent of abortion rights, even joining in a petition to the Supreme Court to overturn the precedent her case helped set.
She joined a small group of other anti-abortion protesters outside the Hart Senate Office Building Monday morning, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
“I’m here to overturn Roe and defeat Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court,” McCorvey said, according to the newspaper’s Website. “She’s unworthy of the position. She’s Catholic. She’s even unworthy of taking communion because of her pro-abortion stance.”

ABORTION.
God is their teacher.
They won't do it twice
as "Roe" now knows.
"Amazing Grace" author
will never again
deal in slavery
or harm his fellowman.
We have all learned things
before this time on earth.
Therefore we all have
different lessons to learn.
Jesus refused to be worldly king
as He will lead by the spirit.
God granted each person free will
and they will learn...regret.
Of course, "Roe" wants to prevent
the taking of the baby's life.
God is a master teacher and
His way is beyond our way to comprehend.
My heart goes out to "Roe"
for she feels deep regret;
my heart goes out to each woman
for she feels great desperation.
My heart goes out to those
who feel they must make the laws.
And...Jesus...wept
for he knew that people
would not listen
and have to learn...the hard way.
There is a wailing of the soul
of people who are on earth
and who suffer...on both sides.

Abortion is legal, as it should be. Those who have so much sympathy and compassion for the unborn have very little sympathy and compassion once the child is born and the family struggles. The majority of anti-abortionists are simply hypocrites..

The choice I made to end my pregnancy absolutely saved my life. Making abortion illegal will not change anything. Mothers of girls "in trouble" back in my strict Catholic Great-Grandmothers day knew which house to turn to to "take care of things" those who didn't ended up with back-alley butchers. It will go back to those days ( it already has in some states) if our reproductive rights are taken away. Good luck to all women no matter what they believe. You may be faced with hard decisions tomorrow so we must fight to keep all options open for everyone - not just the rich white women who can fly to a foreign country for a safe physicians care.

Don't like abortion? Don't have one.
Posted by: GreggW | Jul 13, 2009 5:27:59 PM
What is the big deal about abortion anyway. If you approach it from a religious perspective, the "babies" who are "killed" are going straight to heaven anyway. Statistically, if these same "babies" were brought into our "sinful" world, the vast majority of them would be going to hell since the Pro-Life folks subscribe to the notion that only "believers" will go to heaven. So, let's compare the numbers.. 100% of the "aborted children" get a free pass to eternity vs. maybe 1% of that same group, if they had been born. Hmm... living in the clouds with wings and talking to Jesus and all the other saints for 1000 Bajillion years and a day or frying in the "Lake of Fire" for that same time period.. Even when you throw their own system of logic in their faces, the "pro-lifers" are clueless.

Wow, indy_voter, you paint with a very broad brush. If a family struggles, it's not the baby's fault. Just poor planning or lack thereof. Don't want to struggle? Abstain, or at the very least, use protection. Don't use your financial situation as an excuse to kill the unborn.

To easyrider1968:
If you believe abortion in murder, don't get one. Some people don't believe that an unformed cluster of cells is a person, so aborted said cluster of cells is not murder.

IT SEEM ODD TO ME THAT THE SAME REPUBLICANS WHO ARE ANTI ABORTION ARE THE SAME ONE'S WHO RANT AND RAVE ABOUT PROGRAMS TO HELP THE POOR. WELL HERE IS A CLUE, WE ARE NOT ALL BORN INTO WEALTH, SOME WOMEN FIND THEMSELVES IN SITUATIONS THAT REQUIRE VERH DIFFICULT DECISIONS. TO STAND ON THE OUTSIDE, AND SNEER DOWN UPON SOMEONE LESS FORTUNATE THAT YOURSELF IS JUST AS MUCH OF A SIN IN MY BOOK. EITHER HELP THE HUMAN CONDITION OR SHUT THE HELL UP!
Posted by: lp | Jul 13, 2009 6:04:22 PM
So, she was entitled to a choice and made it. And now, her choice is that other women should not be able to choose?

The religious right make it difficult to be a Christian. I challange any of them to show me where Jesus said that abortion was murder, or for that matter even a sin.
However he does say very clearly, Do not judge or you too will be judged, for in the same way you judge others, you will be judged. I guess they missed that leason as they march like soldiers looking for more reasons to hate.

those of you proclaiming abortion being against god need to understand one thing, there is no god, it's just us here on this planet. We are the most intelligent animal here and for some reason some of us need a higher power to justify our exsistance. It's just us.
Posted by: Rational thinker | Jul 13, 2009 6:17:52 PM
What is ridiculous is that Sotomayor's stance on abortion rights is actually very murky. And why does the fact that this woman "Roe" changed her mind matter? If Brown from Brown vs Ed changed his mind does that negate the validity of desegretation? I'm not sure what the point of Sotomayor's being catholic has to do with anything? Lots of catholics are pro-choice. This woman "Roe" is a loose cannon. She seems to be getting more and more unstable.

If you are a anti abortion activist spend you time and money to reduce the number of unwanted childern that will then reduce the number of abortions. And plese shut up. Abortion is legal and should stay that way. I'm a Republicain.
Posted by: LEE | Jul 13, 2009 6:25:01 PM
Isn't it ironic that in hindsight this woman realized what a mistake she had made. There probably aren't too many parents who weren't terrified of becoming parents even if it is something that they wanted very much. It is a normal reaction. Abortion is like suicide it is a permanent solution to what may be a temporary problem, you don't realize what you are capable of as a parent until you become one, how could you?
I don't think too many people are against abortions if the case is extreme, the mother's life is in danger for example but when you look at the statistics the majority of abortions are not due to this.
Nor are there many that are performed because of rape or incest, those cases are even more rare. Many if not most abortions are to those who have had two or more and making abortion a form of birth control is what most people abhor.
It hasn't been the last resort for many but the first choice.
Posted by: NoMoreMr.NiceGuy | Jul 13, 2009 6:26:03 PM
Sure... while she can get pregnant, she wants a choice. When she is beyond the age where pregnancy is a possibility, she's against it. Nice, eh?
Posted by: Lambofgoth | Jul 13, 2009 7:14:04 PM
When people say they are against girls getting abortions, my first question to them is how many have you adopted???? If you have, then you have the right to stand up and have your say. If you haven't, then sit down and keep you mouth closed.

Re: Ruth Kirby's anti-abortion "Abortion" poem
Yes, Roe changed her tune over time
Yet abortion is still not a crime
But an ode by some broad
That name-drops "Jesus" and "God"
Is wholly devoid of one rhyme

Michael M, let me give you a taste of your own logic:
Are you a foster parent for abused children? B/c by your logic, if not than you don't have the right to say child abuse is wrong.
Have you taken in Darfurian refugees? B/c if not then using your logic you can't say genocide is wrong.
Your analogies and logic are horribly flawed... Everyone has the right to speak out against things they believe are atrocities, even if they don't have the capacity to be a part of the solution.
Take time to think before you speak.

To Jim,
It is not passing judgement to say that an act is wrong. Is murder wrong? Yes. By stating that fact am I judging those who murder? No. I did not condemn them or say that they do not deserve to live. That would be making a judgment upon the person, not the act.
Saying abortion is wrong is much different than slandering and condemning those women (and men) who choose abortion as a solution to an unwanted pregnancy.
You seem to have confused compassion with relativism and tolerance. Jesus treated sinners with compassion. He did however identify sin as sin and tell those who committed them to do so no more.
"And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn you: go, and sin no more" (John 8:2-11 NKJV).
Every human has both the right and obligation to recognize injustices and evils as such.
Please do not manipulate Bible to convince others that they cannot say that an evil, sin, or injustice is anything other than what it is.

Wow, does no one on here realize that there is birth control given out free so that you DO NOT get pregnant? Abortion is murder because it is a baby and anyone who has seen an ultra sound at 9 weeks or is in the medical field knows this. If you make a stupid mistake and don't use birth control, you have to live with the consequences whether that is keeping the baby or letting another famliy adopt it.
