RNC Chairman Steele: Nation Won’t be ‘Guilted’ into Health Reform Because of Kennedy’s Death

The Note: Leadership Now -- Obama urged by both sides to fill political void


We now return you to your regularly scheduled politicking. President Obama’s vacation continues, but the political respite surrounding Sen. Ted Kennedy’s remembrances is over. At the end of this long August, we’re back to where we were. Which is to say, in the middle of partisan fights Kennedy himself would have among the first to engage.

Tributes & Tribulations --Out of remembrances, returns to reality


The remembrances and the tributes won’t break a filibuster. They won’t make a Blue Dog Democrat support a new tax. They won’t make a Republican support the public option. They won’t quiet an attendee of a town-hall meeting. They won’t make Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s close friends from those other places on the political spectrum suddenly reconsider and realize that their old pal was right. This great national period of mourning is a respite from the health care battles -- not the result of some grand accord.
