Nicole Kidman Trades the Hollywood Hills for Capitol Hill

October 21, 2009 6:52 PM

ABC News' Kim Randolph reports: Nicole Kidman appeared on Capitol Hill today using her celebrity to shine a spotlight on the issue of violence against women.  The actress and UN Goodwill Ambassador testified before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights and Oversight.

Three panels made their case for the International Violence Against Women Act to be passed by Congress.  Beginning with Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) who said, "This unprecedented legislation firmly establishes prevention of violence against women as a foreign policy priority."  Melanne Verveer of the State Department said in the second panel, "It is time that violence against women became a concern for us all."

It was during these first two panels that Ranking Committee member Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) took a hard line with the international community.  First, focusing on the Muslim culture he said, “just because a country's producing oil, doesn't mean we should ignore the type of repression that goes on with half of their population.”  He then turned his attention to China referring to them as gangsters and thugs saying, “It's the world's worst human rights abuser on scale because of its bigness and also the nature of its regime, but there's never a penalty to pay."

Kidman, along with Former Rep. Linda Smith, and Mallika Dutt, Founder and Executive Director Breakthrough, made up the final panel of the day.  During Kidman’s opening statement she said, "These champions need and deserve our support.  Not with a box of band aids but with a comprehensive, well-funded approach that acknowledges that women's rights are human rights … To succeed, it requires political will at the highest levels.” And concluded by saying, “After all, a life free of violence is a human right.”

It was in the final question of the day from Rep. Rohrabacher that Kidman was asked to address the issue of Hollywood  influencing and perpetuating violence against women.  Kidman responded coolly, “I get offered films often that depict violence against women. And if I feel that it's exploitive, or that would actually demean women, then I'm not interested, and I pass. I can't be responsible for the whole of Hollywood, but I can certainly be responsible for my own career.”

The International Violence Against Women Act is expected to be introduced in the next few weeks.

Dana Rohrabacher we kill over 1.5 million babies a year. That is a lot of violence against women. Let's deal with our own problems instead of going after other nations. As far as violence against women goes in our culture, I say arm them. A Springfield Armory XDM 9mm would do the trick and make men think twice.

Kidman didn't think her character was demeaned in "Dogville"? Talk about exploitation.

How much is this going to cost the American taxpayer? It there no end to all this? Why doesn't congress help out the American Taxpayer by STOP taxing us to death! I'm starting to feel abused...BTW, I'm a woman too! We have enough trouble here at home, Oh...and I'm not for the public option or this health care takeover. Dems won't get my vote come election day. But what do I know...I only pay taxes...and more taxes!!!

Kidman has starred in countless movies that depict exploitative, if not abusive, behavior towards women! However, she is correct that we need to deal with the Islamic threat toward women and cannot simply pretend that it is ok because they sell us oil or due to some twisted relativist moral positioning that we need to "understand" or "respect" other's culture or worldview. Kidman was also VERY brave to criticize China because communist outrages are usually not noticed by Hollywood or this administration (who just recently refused to see the Dali Lama due to their adherence/respect for Maoism.)

The worst thing we could do is to throw money at a gov't organization and trust they'll "fix" the problem. Gov't has never been the solution to social ills. Look at our welfare roles. They've only increased and created generations of welfare recipients. Look at AIDS. You want to help these women then start by funding freely out of your own pocket, Mrs. Kidman, the organizations involved at the ground level. Stop squeezing the American taxpayer for your cause.

"As far as violence against women goes in our culture, I say arm them. A Springfield Armory XDM 9mm would do the trick" - How would shootouts end domestic violence? When the parents start blasting away at each other do we then arm the kids to protect themsleves? And how about the police that respond to domestic violence calls involving shootouts? I would hate to be in their shoes. Are you even thinking, buddy?

This country always turns a blind eye to other countries that violate human rights if it's in some way to our advantage to do so. Our government lacks the moral fiber of it' people.

While I agree with your last statement, it would be ridiculous to put any other countries' interest before our own here. There are too many issues on our homefront to be concerned with babysitting other countries. I am not saying that I feel we should leave them all to their own, but there is a time and place for everything and right now is not the time, and capital hill sure isn't the place for Nicole Kidman.... I agree with you mommaduck, she can donate all the money she wants, leave my tax dollars alone.

Why is Nicole not testifying at the UN that is who should be holding the Muslims feet to the fire on human right infractions, not the USA. They are a seperate nation as we are and we should not be trying to tell them how to treat their own people. Nicole can go back to Austraila Or put her money where her mouth is I hear she is worth 450 Million dollars.
