Schumer Spins Lieberman's Filibuster Threat
October 28, 2009 3:28 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf reports:
Prepare to enter Chuck Schumer’s spin zone.
Schumer, who was instrumental in convincing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to include the opt-out public option in his health reform bill, tried at a news conference on Capitol Hill, tried to explain how Democrats would get Sen. Joe Lieberman’s out of his pledge to filibuster the bill if it contains a public option after debate on the Senate floor.
“The question has never been the public option’s popularity in the public. Its whether we can muster 60 votes,” said Schumer, who called Reid “the best vote counter and vote getter that I have ever seen in my 35 years as a legislator.”
He was asked several times about Lieberman and said he didn’t know what the big deal was all about.
“I thought the fuss made about what Sen. Lieberman said was greater than I anticipated,” said Schumer. “In fact the fact that he said he was definitely voting on moving to proceed on the motion to proceed we regarded as a good sign because he was one of the four of five people who hadn’t, who our view was hadn’t privately committed to that. “
And Schumer is already casting ahead to the argument he’ll make to moderates to get them to support a final bill in the Senate.
“We all know that the bill that emerges after weeks of debate on the Senate floor is not going to be the same one that leader Reid submitted. And there’s going to be lots of change and lots of compromise and lots of push and pull, hopefully in a bipartisan way, but certainly among the 60 Democrats, who have a wide range of views.”
“And I talked to Joe Lieberman, you know, later in the day and I said just keep your options open. So to speak. Um. That you know there’s going to all kinds of different changes and I think everyone’s going to look at the bill in totality. You have Senators who say well, more moderate senators, who say I’m okay on public option, but I don’t like this. And others who say this and this are good, but you know maybe we should change public option – you’re going to have to let the process wend its way through. The first step is getting the 60 Democratic votes to move forward on the motion to proceed. That’s what we’re working on now and my belief is – and this is just speaking for me – once we get that the process will unfold and we’ll get 60 votes to move forward on final passage as well.“
Schumer implied that the health reform vote will ultimately distill into a black and white decision – either something passes or it doesn’t.
“It’s almos – it is universal – it is not almost it is universal that failure is not an option,” he said. “And so there’s going to be willingness to give by the left by the center by the right. And we will come up with a bill we can all support. We must.”

"You Play With The Hand You're Dealt!"
Concensus;
1. Legislators Agree; Health Care Reform is NEEDED.
2. Majority of Voters Support Health Care Reform.
3. Majority of Voters Support a "Public Option."
4. NO Health Care Reform exists Without a "Public Option."
TAKE IT TO RECONCILIATION, And Get The Bill "Passed" With A "Public Option" - "NO Opt Anything!"
If President Obama (and the Democratic Party) really believe in their Health Care Reform Bill, Concentrate on making the bill as deficit neutral as possible and "Push It Through" - since the majority of voters support this needed reform.
DON'T FORGET to Treat the four (4) Senators; ("The WATERLOO Team") Mary Landrieu, Blanche Lincoln, Ben Nelson and Joe Lieberman) those who opposed the bill - As Members Of The Opposition. Folks should be punished for "Putting Politics ahead of the American People!!"

Lieberman is NOT A DEMOCRAT. He wasn't elected as one, he actively campaigned for the Republican presidential nominee, and he is taking the insurance industry/Republican party line on health care.
Based on reality, it is a flat out lie to say Democrats have a 60 seat super majority - they don't and that will probably doom real health care reform for another 10 years (at which time the collapse of the existing system and Medicare due to spiraling costs will really force it).

bobj72--- Why can't our public officials listen? Can you? Here is the latest Rasmussen poll from Monday: ""If the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats passes, 57% of voters nationwide believe it will raise the cost of health care, and 53% believe the quality of care will get worse. That’s part of the reason that just 45% support the plan. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 51% are opposed to it.
Those numbers include 23% who Strongly Favor the plan and 40% who are Strongly Opposed""""

You say the Democratic party doesn't have a 60 seat Super Majority? Lieberman is an Indepenent Senator representing Connecticut. He's Chairman of Senate Committee (typically reserved for the majority party) and he caucuses with the Majority party. Therefore, in reality it's Dem's X, Repub's Y and Independents 2 (and both caucus with the Democratic Party and are expected to vote with the Democratic Party.)
And, OBTW if Health Care ("H/C") Reform is doomed for the next 10 Years, Health Insurance rates AND rates & fees for Medical Services, Hospitals, Clinics, Labs, Drugs, equipment and supplies will have INCREASED From 100% to 400%, and I wonder who besides Medicare patients will find H/C Costs AFFORDABLE???

You just hit it! This legislation does not address those fees you just explained (you might include college tuition which immediately puts doctors in debt and then they need millions to get out, also illegal immigrants using our ER's as clinics). We need to attack price gouging in every area possible. If these prices continue to soar, what will happen with that government insurance premium? Lower prices and you lower premiums.

I think Joe might just be a man of his word Shumer on the other hand. And like Baucus said ill vote for anything as long as it gets 60 votes ???

Just WHO do you think is CONTROLLING the cost of Services, Fees, Drugs, Equipment, etc... NOW???
REAL AMERICA is very familar with this; "Your (Insurance) Provider says they don't cover the drug on this prescription." Or "the cost for the MRI is $3,000.-, your (Insurance) Provider says your co-pay is only $600.- (and you're paying $350.-/month, your Fortune 1000 Employer's paying the majority of the monthly cost, for the coverage for you and your Spouse.) AGAIN, WHO do you think is Setting the Prices and "Calling ALL the Shots" in our present MONOPOLIZED HEALTH CARE SYSTEM???

Absolutely amazing how people keep stating that "the majority of America favors a public option". The polls are mixed with most using sampling rates far to small to validate that kind of statement. Take it to reconciliation (Nuclear Option) so you can own the result. The public option provides the path to universal health care; providing outrageous taxes for little access to care. Just as they have in Canada.

Does anyone care what Chuck (PORKY amendments)Shumer thinks?

If you are SERIOUSLY INTERESTED in 'getting at the Truth' Follow The Money!!! Be Sure to follow the trail of JOE LIEBERMAN and EVAN BAYH and their WIVES! (There's an awful lot of Money Involved...)
Couple that with, Washington Post - ABC News Poll, Oct. 15 - 18, 2009; "Poll shows support for public option" - 57% Support and 40% Oppose (possible 3 point deviation.) (There are a number of Polls that have been taken. This Poll appears to be "conservative, if not 'middle-of-the-road' on the subject.)
The Question that was put to those Voters Polled, was; "Should we have the government create a new health insurance plan to compete with private health insurance plans?"
Interesting to note, some quarters are "coming up with" Poll numbers in Direct Contradiction to the Poll Numbers offered by The Washington Post - ABC News who presents their organization as "an unbiased news organization, which seeks the truth."

Schumer is a spin doctor. He can not tell Democrat voter's the truth. The truth is the public option is not free health care as most Democrat voters think it is. Lieberman told the truth. The public option is not free it is going to raise the cost of health care for all citizens and limit the benefits to every one.The kicker is he can lie about the health care bill now because it won't go in to affect till 2012 after the election and he is not telling the public that the taxes to pay for health care goes in to affect when the bill is passed in Congress if it passes.Schumer and Obama are not being truthful with citizens.Get smart! Ask your self why the bill won't be posted on the internet for 72 hours before the bill is votede on. Obama says you don't have the right to read the bill!!!

Obama is a stupid socialist and he's going to get a surprise when people evict him from the white house in 2012. Nobody I know thinks this health care debacle is a good idea. It's as stupid as Obama.

It sounds like the Insurance companies with the help of obstructionists Republicans by delaying the bill were able to buy enough time to buy out some of the Democrats to change the bill in favor of Insurance companies. This is known as "MONEY TALKS". Insurance companies lobby is hard at work trying to buy out the congress. With enough time they have succeeded with the help of Lie berman.

Joe Lieberman is a decent, genuine, religiously-observant man.
While such an individual sadly has NO PLACE in Congress, I am glad that he is there. He represents his people, rather than the vermin in the Democrat party. If he were to be a Republican, he similarly WOULD NOT tolerate any under-handed nonsense.
While I find many of Senator Lieberman's positions to be too liberal, at least I know that he is a genuinely good man, doing what he thinks is right---NOT what Nancy S-T-R-E-T-C-H Face Pelosi or Harry Ried tell him to do.
In a party and World that seem to have NO SHAME, Senator Lieberman is a mensch and genuine statesman.
