Norquist: Obama ‘Lied About Lying’ on Taxes; ‘Revolution’ Coming

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: With President Obama saying that Tea Partiers should be thanking him for tax cuts, a leading anti-tax advocate today said the president is “lying” about having kept his promises to not raise taxes on the middle class.

Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, said on ABC’s “Top Line” today that the president didn’t keep his promise to shield all Americans making less than $250,000 a year from higher taxes. “What he didn't mention were all the tax increases that he passed. I mean, he completely missed all the tax increases in the health care bill. And he misspoke -- said something that was not true about his original promise,” Norquist told us.

By raising the tax on tobacco products, “16 days in, his promise not to tax middle-income people was a lie,” Norquist said. “Then he comes back with the health care bill, and we count at least seven -- others that are tougher count as many as 12 or 14 taxes that are directed at people earning less than $250,000. It’s a lie. So he lied about lying, and that's unfortunate.”

The only reason the president can claim to have cut taxes, Norquist said, is “because incomes have fallen.” When people face higher tax burdens in future years -- with the expiration of the Bush tax cuts and the non-renewal of one-time tax breaks -- the political backlash will only be greater, Norquist said.

“The President also has not spent any time listening to the Tea Party movement. I have, because I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that it showed up as early as it did,” Norquist said. “I thought from working at this for 30 years you'd have to wait until taxes were raised, and then people would get angry and get out and vote and maybe turn elections around.”

Added Norquist: “This is a spendaholic spendathon! That's what has people scared and irritated around the country. Wait until the tax increases the Democrats have passed or endorsed kick in. Then you have a revolution. But right now you have a lot of people mad about spending. The president completely misses that because he's too busy calling all these people nasty names.”
