Ad Watch: Pelosi's VP Pick Slams Her, Obama in New Ad

ABC's Z. Byron Wolf reports:

Here’s a sign of the times that takes Democrats breaking with President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to a new level. Remember Chet Edwards?

He’s the moderate Texas Congressman that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took the unusual step of publicly endorsing as President Obama’s Vice President back in 2008 before Joe Biden got the nod.

Edwards is out with a new ca,paign ad out today in which he tries to sever his ties with the President and the Speaker completely.

“When President Obama and Nancy Pelosi pressured Chet Edwards, Chet stood up to them and voted no against their trillion dollar health care bill and no to cap and trade. Chet votes with the conservative chamber of commerce 67 percent of the time. And when the Washington liberals wanted to take away our guns, Chet said no. That’s why the National Rifle Association endorsed Chet Edwads over Bill Flores.” Only 32 percent of the voters in his district voted for President Obama but Edwards won in 2008 with 53 percent of the vote. People like Chet Edwards are why the Democrats control the House. Here’s the argument Pelosi gave George Stephanopoulos on This Week in August of ’08 on why Edwards should be the Veep. (12:23 into the video)

Chet Edwards, for years, our colleagues have said to him, why don't you run for president? He is an extraordinarily talented person. He is the champion for veterans in the Congress. He has -- under his leadership we have passed, included just on Friday, the biggest increase in funding for veteran's health benefits and other benefits in the history of our country. He's a master of the needs of our military and their families. He understands the issues of nonproliferation. He has been a champion in the Appropriations Committee and the Congress. He's from South Texas. He represents -- or he's from Crawford, Texas -- represents President Bush in the Congress. High praise. But that two years of Democrats in power and tough votes where he broke with his party on health care reform and a cap and trade bill meant to stem climate change. The votes didn’t help and Edwards is considered one of the most vulnerable sitting Democrats come November.
