Jessica Alba Lobbies DC for Safer Chemicals

ABC News’ Rick Klein ( @rickklein ) reports:

Actress Jessica Alba brought her lobbying for the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families coalition to Capitol Hill today, pushing a bill that would tighten safety standards for chemical manufacturers whose products are used in consumer goods.

Alba told us on ABC’s “Top Line” today that she grew interested in the issue four years ago, while pregnant with her first child. Now that she’s pregnant with her second, she said, the issue of chemical safety is even more relevant to her life.

“I realized that there are a lot of toxic chemicals in our everyday products, even out household products and sprays,” Alba said. “And I was just flabbergasted that these chemicals weren’t tested before they’re put in products and put on shelves. And literally -- everyday products that you can get at Target, at Wal-Mart, at Macy’s -- nobody’s testing before their ending up in these products that could affect the health of our children.”

Andy Igrejas, national campaign director for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, said the big push is to empower the Environmental Protection Agency to require further testing before chemicals can be placed in household products.

And what’s it like for Alba to walk the halls of Congress?

“It’s incredible -- this is where everything happens, and it always feels like a momentous occasion whenever I’m here,” she told us. “It just gives me a lot of pride as an American to be here, and to advocate for a safer and healthier life for our children.”
