Reports: Rick Perry To Make Presidential Intentions Known Saturday

ABC News’ Arlette Saenz ( @arlettesaenz ) reports:

Texas Governor Rick Perry will make his presidential intentions known this Saturday in South Carolina, according to reports .

Perry’s clarification about pursuing a presidential bid will come as much of the GOP field convenes in Iowa for the Ames Straw Poll.

The Texas Governor is set to make a speech at the Red State Gathering Saturday afternoon along with holding a private meeting with GOP leaders in South Carolina. Saturday evening, he will fly to New Hampshire where he will attend a house party hosted by state Rep. Pam Tucker, R-Greenland, Deputy Speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.

"Governor Perry is a very personable individual, does well one-on-one as well, and in New Hampshire, I think he'll resonate well with voters," Tucker told ABC News.

“While he is on the east coast he is taking up the Deputy Speakers invitation to come to N.H. and visit with real voters,” Dave Carney, a top strategist for Gov. Perry, said in an e-mail.

Politico also reported that Perry will head to Iowa in the days after his South Carolina and New Hampshire trips.

A grassroots group, “Americans for Rick Perry,” which is unaffiliated with the campaign, has touted the Texas governor’s economic record to GOP voters and worked to widen the Texan’s appeal in the Hawkeye state.

“We’ve been talking about the success that Texas has enjoyed. He created new jobs while the rest of the country has fallen short. Something’s working right in Texas,” Craig Schoenfeld, Iowa campaign director for Americans for Rick Perry. “We’re trying to fan those flames of enthusiasm among Iowa activists should the governor get in.”

Perry’s potential announcement comes off the heels of his day of prayer and fasting in Houston, Texas this past weekend. The Response drew in 30,0000 people, much higher than the original estimates released by event organizers. Perry led the religious crowd in scripture readings and prayer.

“Our hearts break for America. We see discord at home. We see fear in the marketplace, we see anger in the halls of government, and as a nation we have forgotten who made us, who protects us who blesses us and for that we cry out for your forgiveness,” Perry said Saturday.

“This is a day that people are going to discuss for years to come.”
