Polling and Party ID

September 24, 2008 12:16 PM

Some confusion about polling and partisan affiliation worked its way into the campaign dialogue today. Let’s sort it out.

It’s at issue because Bill McInturff, pollster for the McCain campaign, held a conference call to suggest the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll in effect overcounted Democrats. The reality is that partisan affiliation in our poll is just about where it’s been all year – and just about where McInturff himself said it might end up on Election Day.

What matters is whether you’re looking at “unleaned” or “leaned” party identification, and whether that’s among registered or likely voters. The most relevant number for this discussion is unleaned party ID among likely voters – 37-30 percent Democratic to Republican in our poll. As it happens that’s precisely where McInturff said the election could turn out: the Republicans, he said, “could be down 6 to 8.”

McInturff’s focus was on a different number  - leaned party ID, not unleaned, and among registered voters, not likely voters. We have a 16-point, 54-38 percent Democratic advantage there, which he said was “an unusual outlier.” In fact, rather than an outlier, that almost exactly matches our average for this number all year, 52-38 percent.

Background: Partisanship is measured by asking if people think of themselves as Democrats, Republicans or independents. That’s unleaned party ID. A next step is to ask independents which party they lean toward. That’s leaned party ID.

Unleaned party ID is more telling – it’s more rooted in actual partisan sentiment; it lets us look separately at independents, the quintessential swing voters; and it’s the number that’s comparable to what we learn from the exit polls on Election Day.

As noted, unleaned party ID among likely voters in our latest poll is 37-30 percent. Its average since we started following likely voters in June has been about the same, 36-31 percent. Among the broader population of registered voters it’s 38-28 percent, exactly matching its 2008 average in ABC/Post polls. Our leaned party ID among registered voters, also as noted, is 54-38 percent. Among likely voters it’s 52-41 percent.

I’m attaching to this note a pdf of our party ID breaks all year. You won’t see McInturff’s: “We’ve never talked about our internal numbers during the campaign,” he said. “Ever.”

as the Obama supporters get panic because of sudden McCain rise in the polls, they are sure to make up something to make Obama look good. I am one who does not trust these polls at all. I think McCain will win. It is only a matter of time that all people realize Obama's actions and records belie his words.

More distraction and distortion. The McCain camp is trying to say that the figures lie when what is actually happening is that the liars are figuring--also known as excuse time.

amy,

Did you read the blog? Have you seen McCains numbers? " McCain rise in the polls"

HUH?

The latest abcnews poll has Obama up by 9. McCain lead by 2... 2 weeks ago.

You're mistaken.

Any intellegent human being will use their brain to analyze our current economic, politic, education, etc..etc situations, and Mc-Pain will not near any logical choice. I cannot trust him to lead this big country with his low understanding about what's going on in our daily life. We have seen a very good example in the last 8 years, and now you want to experience it again for anpther 4 years? Oops!

Do the Media, Obama and his campaign actually think that anyone in their right mind would actually believe this CRAP? Obama will NOT WIN THIS ELECTION no matter what poll of polls they put out there to try and fool voters. I, have to say, that this election has been the WORSE THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER SEEN. After this election is over in November and President McCain takes office, it is going to take a while to get this country back on track.

Obama is the WORSE presidential candidate that this country has ever seen. I say to the Media and Obama campaign, keep it up with all the lies and political spin and see how far it gets Obama in November.

What we all need to do is get out there and do what ever you can to get McCain/Palin elected. In the end, Obama will LOSE. I still have faith in the American people on election day that they will make the right choice for this country.

A key thing to point out here is that the pollsters don't call people based ON party affiliation, they ASK the people they call about it.

So out of their sampling of people listed as registered voters...more of them are calling themselves Dems or Dem-leaning. That tells a story unto itself.

More people want to be listed as Dems these days.

Now if the called people based on their politcial parties...my guess is the polls would almost always be close to a 50/50 split. So that tells us next to nothing.

will win in november....regardless
how the economy will look in november.

Americans vote for president with certain values regardless if they agree
with all issues........

I'm a democrat BUT i will vote for
McCain/Palin ticket.

a) Obama supporters are panicking because McCain is apparently doing better in the polls and b) the polls, which show Obama doing significantly better, are lying. Does not compute.

Buzz up!John McCain, whose ads skewer Barack Obama for his "celebrity" status, has his own close ties to show business, the new issue of Us Weekly reports exclusively.

The 72-year-old was recently made TV-ready by makeup artist Tifanie White who's worked on So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol.

McCain paid the 2002 beauty-school grad $5,583.43 for her services, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Apparently, McCain only attacks companies that demand McCain and Palin stop hiding and answer questions.

Obama and the DNC today asked for a dismissal of a Lawsuit filed by Phil Berg regarding his legal citizenship and qualifications for POTUS based upon subject matter and lack of a claim.

No evidence was submitted and ...

No word yet on whether the judge has granted the motion.

How in the world can Obama be elected? Reciting a poll from The Democratic Party Washington Post is meaningless. If Obama wins, it's because the Liberal Media of this country bought and paid for the Office of the President. Little is covered about this man's shady Chicago past. His philosophy of what he stands for changes every day according to his audience. He's being packaged and presented by some powerful money that is still unknown to the public. His fast track through Chicago politics and now through the national politics is scary for this country. Still independent.

The McCain/Palin ticket is the absolute worst idea that the Republicans could come up with, although they had no one else - what does that tell you?
They have no ideas, other than the same ol crap the repubs have been dishing out to this country for 8 loooooong years. Its time for change and Obama/Biden will give us what this country needs - new ideas, and a real concern for the American people!

VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN IN NOVEMBER!

All I have to say is that in a recent Sarah Palin interview (one out of the whopping three shes done - it shouldn't be that hard to figure out which one I'm talking about) Palin was asked to cite specific examples of McCain's past support of more oversight over Wall Street. Her answer "I'll try to find ya some and I'll bring 'em to ya". PRICELESS!!

Wow- how misguided are these Republicans--I guess not everyone researches the facts and just decides to believe what they read and see on the news. Wake up McCain is not change he represents corporate America and his views are just another representation of an administration that continues to mislead this country. McCain do bloggers know that you have supported so many of Bush's foreign policies and lack the MAVERICK persona you so pursue. Dont just blog vote OBAMA. OBAMA will be in the white house in January--Americans are smarter than McCain and Palin think.

Posted by: James | Sep 26, 2008 10:38:46 PM

Obama is totally credible, totally tuned in and aware of life in 2008. Unfortunately McCain comes across as out of touch, unaware of what's important to Americans in this day and age and really living in the past, focusing on where he's been and what happened during those times, instead of what's happening now. Barak Obama DOES UNDERSTAND. Sadly, McCain doesn't.

After watching Obama's performance, as a Clinton supporter, I decided to go for McCain finally!
McCain is ready to lead, Obama was very nervous and did not answer the asked questions , kept changing subjects, and told few baseless comments!

Obamanation is what it will be if Obama wins. McCain is a republican, but it doesn't mean more of the same we have had the last 8 years. You can say what you want about Bush, but he has kept American safe since 911. Clintons had it easy, and got all the credit for Senior Bush's work. You can not change the country and see the results in just four years. Clintons are what started the mortage mess....look it up yourself!!!!

Posted by: Angel | Sep 26, 2008 11:15:03 PM

How can you vote obama. He doesn't even want to be an American. Can't put his hand on his chest and say the pledge, what is wrong with you ppl??? He want to bring back the death tax. He wants to raise taxes on retirement. Come on ppl. He will raise them up 35 % from 10 to 45. We wont have a future we wont be able to afford a future. What about our children? Don't they deserve a future. Not when it will be legal for partial birth abortion under Obama. He will take away our guns, that will just put them in the hands of those who don't need them and we wont be able to protect ourselves anymore. Think ppl think.

I watched this debate and still am very confused by the way adults can totally return to childish ways of trying to show who is the "best". I think both men running think they will be better for the country, but I still do believe that experience and a bit of humilty are very important so my idea is that John McCain is what our country needs at this stage of our very bad situations. Obama very much thinks he is the one for the job and if we get him I pray he is, but he truly doesn't seem to understand just what this is all about, but just my own opinion. But I am older and do remember how bad things can get and our country is truly in crisis We cannot just spend our way out or tax our way out.

No more free rides for the politicians. The government should stop printing money it's not worth the paper it's printed on. The politicians should stop over spending in every area. They should not bail out the banks. They should come together with a plan to restructure and fire some CEO's. They should not be compensated for making a mess of the economy. should stop spending and

How can you vote McCain? What have the Republicans done for the working people?
The rich continue to take from the poor and give to the rich. You want a President who cares about all the people and who is not ashame to get his hands dirty. Also you want a man who belives in prayer and calling on the Creator who has all the answers.

Posted by: Brenda | Sep 27, 2008 12:20:40 AM

You're right Angel, Clinton got all the credit for Sr. Bush's work and planning, and George Jr. inherited all the mess Clinton created. Clinton started the mortgage mess and the economic decline - some of those "political wizards" need to research it and find out. We will not realize what George Jr. did for our country economically until his term is over and thank God in heaven he has kept us free and safe from terrorists since 9/ll. We cannot afford to hand our country over to a leader who has no knowledge of our military and what it takes to maintain it and its importance in keeping America number one!! Our people are so complacent they have not a clue how these other countries live without power, street bombings, no food, etc. Our people crumble when there is a power blackout or storms takeout power and water. We need a leader who is strong like John McCain and can stand up to these terrorists and the countries that condone them and mean what he says and let them know he knows and has the ability to back it up. Why do you think all the military leaders are backing him? They know it is a scary thought to place our country's freedom in the hands of a man with no experience, who talks out of both sides of his mouth and has to rely on other people to prompt him what to say in these issues. I don't have any faith in what the news media says or who they proclaim the winner in their "poll". Who did they contact? More liberals perhaps? Nobody called the true down to earth Americans who live a true American existence to see what they thought. The news media have always leaned toward liberalism. They need to get real. Oh by the way, I am proud to be an American every day, not like O'bama's wife who said the only time she was proud to be an American was when he got the nomination for President. I don't think that kind of attitude belongs in the Whitehouse, either. John McCain has fought for this country and has the experience to lead it and I believe has earned the right to be President of the United States.

How can you vote for Obama? You actually want your taxes going to create more government "programs"? McCain wants to get rid of big government. It will NOT be 4 more years of the same! If you go to the following website you will see McCain refer to Czechoslovakia numerous times
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/14/mccain-references-non-exi_n_112650.html
Remember: Czechoslovakia is NO LONGER a country, and hasn't been since Jan 1, 1993. Even my former elementary students knew that! This is the man who wants to be in charge of our foreign affairs! He was in the senate when Czechoslovakia split into two independent countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. I don’t expect the average citizens who completed their education prior to 1993 to know that, but this guy claims to be qualified and knowledgeable in foreign affairs.
Also visit the following sites to see McCain’s double talk and blunders. ... these are as bad as the infamous George Bush bloopers. If McCain is elected, international opinion of the USA will drop even lower!

The media has all stops pulled and are busy spinning their propaganda webs to turn the minds of the think less for support of Obama. Have you noticed no attention by the main stream media given to Obama’s questionable acquaintances? Massive tax money losses? His poor penniless brother who he continues to ignore? His total lack of experience? We get to hear in great detail all about Palin’s life and her religious beliefs but nothing about Pastor White, Obama’s pastor who spits curses out at America and preaches hate. Obama sat under his tutelage for over 20 years. His own wife says Americans are mean. You only get to hear this info on Fox news all the other news medias won’t inform you because that would damage their liberal poster boy. Here’s a test try and listen to the main stream media and count the times they talk poorly about each candidate. You will find Obama virtually untouched. Get real people, before the propaganda media and web spinners tell you what to believe, do a thorough search on your own on Obama. The media won’t do it for you it will take some research on your own. Remember an important lesson from WWW11, the Nazi’s brainwashed the public to hate the Jews through a massive propaganda machine, the media news and movies. If you don’t do a search, you will only know what they tell you. They could get Mickey Mouse elected in this day and age.

I am a Republican who was looking forward to finally voting for a competent, intelligent Republican candidate. But the more I see of Sarah Palin the better Obama looks. I thought he held his own in the debates, though personally I feel McCain won. I'm still undecided, but Palin may be the deciding factor. If McCain were 5 years younger and had no health issues I wouldn't care as much. But for crying out loud, the woman is pathetic!

Too many people, just do not realize, that the Fool, who has led the middle class, for over 100 years, will be Reveiled. And we will place a 'Duence Cap', on the 'Capitolist Extremists', and uncover their 'Bluff'. Isn't it a shame, that our government has been so covered up, by those who think they are smarter than the middle class. Since after all, they write the History of the World, and have the Power and Control, to make paperwork disapper. Capitolists think that money can buy forgetfulness. But just think about who Controls your thoughts. The Upper Class History writers. Follow the White Rabbit, and see a Corupted History. It can be enlighting indeed. The REPUBLICAN guard, are known as terrorists, in other countries.
Just wait for History of the World Part 2. or will it be Part 3. To part the...sea. Of the upper class, of course.

A ABC is not a poll that I would put much faith in at all. As everyone knows they are far left leaning so their poll is going to be developed to give the best light to Obama. With that said I do put faith in the Gallup which does have Obama up which I think is about right at this time in the campaing. Over all he has run a good campaing. And with that said it does not mean he will make a good President, he will not, I think he will be another Jimmy Carter, one term disappointment leaving the next one to pick up whats left and make somethig out of it. But it will be change kinda like the change we wanted in congress and senate, we got it and now it is worse than before a lot worse. And they just keep digging it deeper. Reid and the P are hopeless and should be voted out now. And then we need term limits so this type of people can not stay in for ever. The way they keep getting in is in the P's case, going for all bills that the people who vote for her like and we all know that this type of voting is killing the moral standing of the US.

I'm a 19 year old registered Democrat and I'll be voting for Obama/Biden. My parents were Republicans their entire lives until the 2004 election. They're now registered Democrats and will be voting for Obama/Biden. The only registered Republican in our home, my twin sister, voted for McCain in the primaries but has since moved to support Obama and will be voting for him in November. Party affiliation means less this year than it used to.

Oh men,
It is good to discredit but you cant surely discredit what is good already. Maccain was a briliant solder and worked hard and faithfully then but Obama is good now. he has what it takes to take this country ahead and has fresh ideas. Let us give him this chance

Helloo Americans,
I have been a faithful supporter of the republicans and still do, but this time round fate is against us. It surely looks that the other guy Obama is good than our Man Maccain. The economy has sealed our fate and we can only do one honourable thing. AGREE TO LOOSE HONOURABLY IN AN CASE WE HAVE DONE AMERICA PROUD IN MANY INSTANCES BUT THIS GUY HAS BITTEN US NOW .LET US GIVE HIM

Sarah Palin is an absolute winner and truly shined tonight as the only worth candidate in this whole race!

Sarah Palin related to me as a woman and a person. She was confident, intelligent and real!

They both made mistakes.

I will vote for McCain/Palin!

I am so sick of ABC and others bashing Sarah Palin. Shame on you!

I have heard the Deer in Headlights line a dozen times too often.

Can we focus on the issues?

I am shocked and dissappointed in your slanted coverage of the debates and the election.

I have watched ABC for many, many years and have lost much respect due to your coverage of the elelction.

Are you kidding Robert!? Obama is going to win this election and you know why...because the American people are sick and tried of the same ole boys ruining our country, thats right, ruining it not running it. Obama is the most intelligent person to have graced political arena in a very long time (almost 8 years). You need to jump on board with the rest of us and vote for Obama/Biden you will not be sorry you did after all it can only go up from here (that is unless we get 4 more years of the same).

There is no Question , My husband and I will vote for MCCAIN/PALIN.Why? Because they are TRUE and REAL American that we can Trust for. McCain --you are the real hero. Palin -- you are a hockey Mom so do I. There you go...

Funny how George Stephanopoulos (sp?) is ready to declare Obama the winner when his own ABC poll shows McCain has cut the margin from 9% last week to 4% this week. Then, when you add the 3% margin for error, seems to me to be a pretty close race.
