Bob Woodruff in Iran: Day Seven

January 04, 2006 12:42 PM

Tehran is horribly polluted.  From the heights overlooking the city, a blanket of smog turns the buildings nearly invisible.  The traffic is so tight you can sit for ten minutes at a time without moving at all.  To cut the number of cars on the road, authorities have implemented a plan by which people can only enter the city every other day: odd license plate numbers one day, even numbers the next.  Since we have work to do, we ignore the rule -- and we’re constantly pulled over. Fortunately, our driver explains that we’re foreign journalists authorized to do this and they let us go every time.

Yoga is getting big in Tehran.  Our senior producer Kate Felsen visited a class for women and it is completely oversubscribed.  500 students already, and there’s a waiting list to get in.  Ten years ago, Yoga was forbidden in Iran because it was considered some kind of black magic.  It’s one example of the little freedoms people have been able to wrest from the regime as the revolution fades further into history.  But the owner of the Yoga studio wouldn’t let us shoot the women doing any poses.  It is too risqué.  They would only let us shoot them stretching.

Bob/TPTB @ ABC News:
I have to thank you for creating this forum for your viewers! What an excellent way for us to get more insight into the day's big stories as well as putting the viewer in touch with the anchors. Bob, your blogs have been great! Very informative. I can't even imagine what it must be like travelling throughout Iran! As Americans--Iran isn't one of the hotspots we were educated about in school in the 60's and 70's. Not until the hostage crisis of 1979 can I recall Iran--mainly--Tehran being the forefront of TV news. I look forward to your continued blogs/reports. Thanks!!!

Hi Bob,
I jsut caem back from Tehran on January 5th. I wish I had known that you were in Tehran, so I could have met you in person and perhaps be of service to you. I am an Iranian-American U.S. Citizen living in San Jose, CA. I work as a producer-Director for a PBS affiliate (KCSM) here. I really enjoyed reading your logs and I felt your pain when dealing with some of the people. Thanks for reporting on Iran.
