Inside (or outside) Tony Snow's first gaggle

May 12, 2006 10:36 AM

Chief White House correspondent Martha Raddatz blogs:

Tonysnow051206 Tony Snow had his first morning "gaggle" today. He decided to move it to his office. It was a really, really bad idea. He also had another really bad idea. He started the gaggle 15 minutes ahead of schedule. (The White House had actually put out an email saying the gaggle time had been moved to 9:30---but he started at 9:15.) (At left, Snow with the WH press corps after the gaggle.)

So what you had is half the press corps highly irritated that we missed the top of it---and more than half highly irritated because we could barely hear. Dozens of people were out in the hallway because it was so packed.

But Tony took an immediate fall on his sword: "I thought this would be nice and congenial and it is obviously just a mess."

In other words... See you back in the briefing room next week. This was a really bad idea.

But boy is he a smoothie... Managing not to tell us anything: "Can't comment on national security issues." But he did it in such a skillful way.

Oh, and on presidential access. Tony previously said that it has been written that he will have walk-in access. Today he didn't want to go that far: "I have access."

His first televised briefing will be Tuesday… Not Monday. Wouldn't want to take anything away from the President's upcoming speech.

Martha adds that she isn’t sure that she got any of the quotes verbatim... She couldn’t hear.

At least 68% of the country who disapprove of Bush should care about the NSA tapping your phones.

Why?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/dotmil/arkin020199.htm

“…They took various high quality recordings of generals and experimented with creating fake statements. One of the most memorable is Colin Powell stating “I am being treated well by my captors.”

By taking just a 10-minute digital recording of [anyone’s] voice, scientist George Papcun is able, in near real time, to clone speech patterns and develop an accurate facsimile. A [US General] was so impressed, he asked for a copy of the tape.

How about Bush targeting and labeling you as an “enemy combatant”? Hauled off to Gitmo, no lawyer, no trial. How? with this technology, anyone could “morph” your voice and record a phone call of you saying you want to assassinate the president or were plotting a terrorist attack.

A smoothie? More like a melted malt shake. Pure vanilla, and a complete mess.

Read Dana Milbank's article in the Post. It is shocking how ill prepared Tony seems to be for his job, and who is Tony to allow Chris Wallace special access??? I notice how Chris' little extracuricular visit didn't make it into the above report.

Since when is "skillful" lying and obfuscation a source of admiration and a sign of distinction? This is truly ugly to behold. You know, people are dying every day, literally, as a direct result of the actions of this administration. That's not some partisan hype, it's the factual reality in which we live, no matter how we may attempt to distract ourselves with frippery and triteness. Tony Snow needs to be doing a whole lot better job than he's doing already, I have no sympathy for his status as "new kid." We, the people, deserve a whole lot more information from this administration, and we need it, like, yesterday. I don't recall Joe Lockhart getting any kind of kudos for how smartly he parried questions about Monica Lewinsky. And in Joe's defense, he was kept out of the loop.

Tony is an unmitigated disaster, and it's only going to get worse.

Martha, don't ya' think almost anyone's presentation would be seen as "smooth," after what you've had to sit through the past few years with Scotty?

Martha Raddatz' blog entry displays all the bias, arrogance, and inaccuracy we have come to expect from MSM White House reporters.

The first half of her blog entry is a rant about how horrible it was that Snow started the briefing 15 minutes ahead of schedule, and that his office was too small for all the reporters who decided to show up that day. She's obviously a charter member of the preening prima donna wing of the White House Press Corps.

Then she takes a gratuitous personal slap "boy is he a smoothie" before making a completely false statement "Managing not to tell us anything" which is factually contradicted by a transcript of the briefing at http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/000638.php
in which Snow answers quite a few questions.

However, she provides real evidence of what a devious character Snow is by contrasting "it has been written that he will have walk-in access" with the totally different statement by Snow "I have access."

Then she puts the final nail in Snow's credibility coffin by revealing "His first televised briefing will be Tuesday… Not Monday. Wouldn't want to take anything away from the President's upcoming speech." Gee, imagine that, the press secretary holding a briefing right after the President's speech. How disgraceful.

If the MSM, and ABC in particular has any interest in why non-leftist consumers are deserting them in droves, they need look no further than this White House reporter.
