Fox Report: He barks and decides
June 27, 2006 11:34 AM
Correspondent Miguel Marquez blogs from Baghdad:
Fox is growing up. He was adopted by us here at ABC Baghdad after the Fox News bureau had a puppy glut several months ago. Fox is now about four months old and after a period of being absolutely scared to death of everyone and everything he is coming out of his proverbial shell, much to the chagrin of our Iraqi guards. (At left, Fox earlier this month.)
Fox has started the naughty habit of barking at several of the guards as they walk by. There is something funny, and shocking, about watching the little ten pound pooch chasing AK 47 toting Iraqi guards. Sometimes he just pins them to the wall. The guards have taken to getting escorts that are friends of Fox or doing serious reconnaissance or creating diversions before heading to their posts. It’s a new game, so it’s still cute, but it is quickly getting old.
Fox clearly has no idea how good he has it. Iraqis lecture us that dogs of his lowly provenance are usually left to die or have a bullet put their heads. When the vet came to visit him a couple of weeks ago I asked her what kind of mix she thought he was. “A local breed” she said flatly. “Local breed” seems to translate to mutt mixed with mutt.
Whatever he is, he’s pretty loveable. We all spend way too much time doting on him. He plays catch and loves to play soccer (it is World Cup after all.) Fox is up in the early morning when it’s cool and he’s usually up for a little game of fetch. He then spends most his days lazing about in a muddy hole he calls home. We’ve tried just about everything to entice him to sleep in a somewhat cleaner spot but he seems to prefer the damp and relatively cool mud. In the evenings he comes back to life. Always up for a little game of “chase me around the yard cause I’m so darned cute” or he’ll just follow me from the bureau to dinner then back again (I’m sure he thinks he’s providing protection.) Other than chasing the occasional guard (we are really trying to break him of this habit) Fox has a very sweet temper. He loves the water and is a HUGE sucker for a belly rub. Who isn’t?
He’s just a pup but Fox is pure innocence and comfort. After a long day of immersing oneself in the gruesome details of what has become “normal” here, it’s soothing to my soul to scratch him behind the ears and know that he is really, REALLY loving it.

Fox would be the only thing keeping my sanity there!
(However, I would change his name.)
And at 115º, I would be in the mud as well.

Well, I think I might be tempted to change the name, too. But then again, the Fox group was nice enough to share.
Dogs are so great about lavishing their love without regard to merit. What a great bud to have around when others are not exactly minding their manners.
Always great to see Miguel on air.
