Bush’s new neighbor

August 01, 2006 6:14 PM

ABC’s Ann Compton blogs about who’s moving into Crawford, Texas, this week -- about the time President Bush arrives home for vacation:

Cindysheehan060718 Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a faller soldier, led summer protests against the war last year arousing quiet McLennan County. This week she’s coming back as a ranch owner. Well, owner of what her Gold Star Families for Peace website describes as “a beautiful, wooded 5 acres of land that will be ideal for our expanding peace population and for hosting our growing family.” The group says the Crawford property is in town, compared to the pastures and roadside encampments populated with white crosses and voices of protest in 2005.(At left, Sheehan with Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney last month.)

Sheehan announced that she used government death benefits from the loss of her son Army Spc. Casey Sheehan to purchase the land which local records list as costing $50,000. McLennan County real estate taxes: $9.20 a year.

Sheehanland On the website Sheehan explains she’ll keep the property until President Bush resigns or is impeached. She might not be able to build on the land because it lies in a flood plain restricted by the city. It’s along the Middle Bosque River, which also passes the President’s Prairie Chapel Ranch. Sheehan is downstream, so there won’t be any recreational tubing past the U.S. Secret Service. (At right, fellow war protester Gerry Fonseca clears brush Thursday from the five-acre lot just off Highway 317.)

For the first time since he bought his 1600 acre spread, President Bush is not going to spend the whole summer there -- just a week and then a few days before Labor Day.

Sheehan notes his absence and writes she has come to find Crawford lovely. “I feel so at home there. When I am able to return, I feel a renewal and resurgence of energy and hope. The sunrises and sunsets and star-lit nights are breathtaking and there is nothing like a cool (if rare) Crawford evening breeze to dry off the sweat and sweeten the soul.

This act is wearing thin. It was cute for a while, now she is exactly what the right calls her. OUT OF HER MIND

Gee, do you mean to tell me that little Barbara, is not going to go over to her new neighbor, and new BEST FRIEND, with one of her home made
Apple pies? To Cindy, all the neighbor gossip(watch out for that goat farmer Cin, he will hit upon you) George is not going to ask Cindy to come over and drink a beer(remember the pretzel scandal, it was beer the old man was drinking), and watch the game with him? The twins, are not going to ask their new AUNT CINDY, to take then to the zoo. I am upset , whatever happen to 'LOVE THEY NEIGHBOR", (unless your mines) . George, should mark over to Cindy place right now and give her a BIG HUG". Cindy I am sorry, that I let your son get kill. Will you forget me?

It is amazing the right wing is still defending this murderer. Bush is responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people and it all happened because of his lies. Yet, they still attack the families that have died because of Bush. Amazing.

I think it's HILARIOUS that Cindy bought that land...and chased bush from having his nice long quiet vacation interrupted. Kudos for you Cindy and supporters, My ONLY regret is that I can't come down and camp out with you. I admire that you've taken a STAND against that tyrant. And yes..we desperately need a NEW REGIME!! bush has made us PIRIAH'S with every country in the world. Him and his oil buddies...and cheney's haliburton buddies..are making MILLIONS off of our backs........don't believe ANYTHING they tell you...VOTE the republicans out of office..and take back our lives! Oh..is this UNpatriotic will the republican's scold me? EVERYONE needs to speak out before our free speech is gone...as bush and buddies are slowing taking it away and laughing as they do so! He already boughttwo elections....!

I am of the old. The loss of someone in a war has touched most all over the world, it would be nice if we did not have war, but.. Defending our freedom comes with a price, just as I have lost. Myself served in the 101st Airborne as did my son in the Military Intelligence in Bosnia and Afghanistan. I am Proud of what he did. He went to Collage, graduated then wanted to go to the Army so he could continue to help others keep freedom. I too would have felt bad had I lost him, but I believed in him. Sheehan should have known her son wanted the same, but does not want to except what her son wanted to do. She should be Ashamed. She should except what her son wanted and believed in him.

It won't matter, Bush is so shielded in his "Bubble" that he won't even notice. Just like he doesn't notice the daily drumbeat of death and destruction in IRAQ, after all he is the "decider" and when he "decided to invade Iraq" it was to hell with everyone else. Why do you think these guys won't call for a cease fire in Israel? Because the media is focused on that on going conflict and they aren't spreading all the death and destruction in Iraq all over the NEWS. So, for Bush et al it's a win win situation.
Never has this country had such a horrible President and it gets worse daily. I for one would be happy to see this Presdient/Cheney/Rice/Rove/Rummy etal dropped in the middle of Bagdaghad with a pea shooter and and old beat up helmet! Then we could tell them O.k. guys we will pick you up when you have achieved 'VICTORY'. So good for you Cindy, I may not agree with everything you say, but you have a right more then anyone to say it. Give em hell.
Thanks fed up in Idaho, Sue F

Out of her mind to say the least!. Her son knew what he was getting into and I admire him for laying down his life for what He loved....His country. He is a hero..Her actions make her a heel!
The fine folks in and around Crawford have the right to refuse service to anyone. I hope she remembers this when she visits and wants to go for a night out on the town.

When is it cause for laughter when a person stands up for what they believe? Last year the country was not as unified in its denunciation of the war. Could it be that the actions of Cindy Sheehan and others served as a wakeup call for Americans. If only this was a presidential election year. Until it is, Americans will have to cope with Bush's war plans and more mothers will be called on to mourn their sons and daughters. May God help our country and bring peace where now there is none.

GET A LIFE CINDY! YOUR SON KNEW WHAT HE WANTED AND YOU HAVE THE GALL NOW TO GRIPE ABOUT IT!!!!!! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF! LET GWB TAKE A BREAK ON HIS VACATION - GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE CINDY AND GROW UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: CAS | Aug 2, 2006 12:59:11 PM

Go Cindy! But I'm afraid Buchannon is right -- W won't notice. Not unless it somehow affects his personal financial portfolio. To those who claim that Casey Sheehan was "laying down his life for his country" -- that's simply not true. He died fighting a ridiculous war that has nothing to do with our 'freedom' in the U.S. and nothing to do with fighting the war on terrorism.

YOU GO CINDY!! Bush & his administration is the worst in our country's history. It's AMAZING that there are still people who don't see it. Even more amazing are those who think Cindy should just go away. Her son's death, (and those of +2,500), was based on LIES! He thought he was doing what was right but he was lied to by Bush & Co. Yes, he's a hero as are all those who died and have been injured, but they were LIED to! Don't give up Cindy! You have the guts to do what is in your heart!!! KEEP IT UP!!!

We've got a president who took advantage of this country's fears after 911 to attack, bomb, and occupy a sovereign nation which bore zero threat to the security of the United States, incinerating tens of thousands of innocent civilians, yet people still are so married to American military glory that they shrilly attack one forlorn mother instead of adamantly demanding accountability from George W. Bush. Would that we had one politician with the guts of Cindy Sheehan, to stand up and demand, STOP THE KILLING NOW

Actually, J.D., while the fine folks of Crawford may have the right to refuse service, the fine folks I encountered there were polite and rather more welcoming than you appear to be.

Way to go Cindy !

If Bush really believes his own bull, why are his daughters not enlisted in the military? Whay are these two girls not on the front lines in Iraq ready to 'proudly lay down their lives for freedom' ???? All of FDR's sons went to war.

Posted by: David | Aug 2, 2006 2:56:32 PM

Cindy should stop and be thankful that she can buy land anywhere she pleases. I believe Cindy has lost touch with reality, freedom is not free. We All Have Sacrificed Something For Freedom.

For what noble cause did we go to Iraq?

Posted by: Dan Lewis | Aug 2, 2006 3:03:22 PM

To the gentleman who served in the 101st airborne (my father was in the 101st as a screaming eagle), please understand the difference between support for our troops, and support for an illegal war. Can you imagine the friends you would still have if Germans who new better had actually risked their lives to stand up to Hitler?

I know Cindy to be a mother who was proud of her son and his service. She, and Casey were not, as I understand it, supportive of the war. Casey was a true soldier and would have gone anywhere his fellow troops needed him.

Sir, as an infantry man, I'm sure you understand this well. It would be wonderful if we had a proper President (Commander In Chief) who understood this simple principle. You never put anyone in harm's way unless you have no other option.

We can all see now, through his handling of the Israeli, Palestinan, Lebanese, North Korean, Iranian, etc. difficulties, just what George Bush thinks passes for diplomacy.

God help us all.
