Apple: It’s Showtime
September 12, 2006 12:52 PM
ABC’s Alex Stone blogs from the site of today’s announcement in San Francisco:
Like a movie premiere complete with velvet ropes and servers offering hors d'oeuvres atop silver platters, hundreds of Apple analysts and more than a few reporters huddled outside Yerba Buena Gardens in Downtown San Francisco waiting to be allowed inside today's event.
It's all about the show for Apple... Lights, bright colors, big
video screens flashing lots of images, and loud music. In fact, at
times, this product announcement was more like a concert in itself.
Once Apple CEO Steve Jobs finished his presentation he introduced John
Legend who performed two songs. The only piece of Apple's presentation
that wasn't bright was Jobs' clothing -- his typical black shirt and
blue jeans.
As for the content of the presentation, it's pretty darn cool. I should
note that ABC's parent company, Disney, is in on the deal. Disney is
now offering its movies for download on iTunes. Right now 72 movies are
being offered for download and Jobs promises many more soon. I haven't
had time to download a movie yet -- but if they look as good as they
did on Apple's big screen, then I can see why downloading movies will
likely be a hit for people who travel a lot and want to download onto
their iPods and hit the road. The one hiccup is the inability to burn
to DVD but Jobs showed off something he calls iTV (but says the name
will change) that will be available in 2007 allowing users to
wirelessly watch movies from their computers on regular TV screens.
Much of Apple's announcement leaked out beforehand but still, one must
give credit to the company for making the computing industry and iPod
fans pay so much attention to what would be just another product
unveiling at any other company. Apple has truly mastered the art of
gaining free publicity.
