NEGROPONTE SAYS MCCAIN BILL WOULD KILL CIA DETENTION PROGRAM
September 13, 2006 3:20 PM
ABC News' Jonathan Karl reports: Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte just held a hastily arranged conference call with reporters to say that legislation proposed by the Republican-controlled Senate Armed Services Committee would kill the CIA's once-secret prison program.
"The bottom line," Negroponte said of the McCain/Warner/Graham, "is this will not allow for the CIA high value terrorist detention program described by the president to go forward."
Negroponte said the CIA program is "one of the most valuable, if not the most valuable, source of human intelligence with respect to al Qaeda" and that it is the judgment of CIA Director Mike Hayden that the program could not go forward under the McCain/Warner/Graham bill.
