Ethics Committee Probe Into Foley Heats Up

October 11, 2006 9:14 AM

ABC News' Dean Norland reports:  In a sign that interviews may underway in the House ethics committee probe of the scandal surrounding Mark Foley's resignation, at 9:50 am ET the chief page supervisor for the Republicans Peggy Sampson entered the ethics committee.

Prior to Sampson's arrival, two court reporters arrived with suitcases with wheels on them that they keep their steno machines in.  At 9:14 am ET, Bill O'Reilly, the chief counsel for the committee, entered the room.  This is the first action that has been noticed outside the ethics committee room on Capitol Hill since the committee convened last week to launch the investigation.

No sworn testimony can be given without a member of the committee present, and Norland reports that no members have been seen entering the room.  However it does appear that the staff of the ethics committee is interviewing witnesses today.

Former Foley chief of staff Kirk Fordham, a central figure in the Foley investigation, is expected to testify before the ethics committee tomorrow.  For more on Fordham's anticipated testimony, go here: LINK

Why is Foley still at large, not in jail, not yet even been questioned, not incarcerated like any other American who committed the same acts?

Had Foley not been guilty he would not have resigned and would not have gone into hiding. Oh, that’s right, for a disgraced Congressman that’s called REHAB!)

Cover-up in Washington? Well, sure! They wanted Foley's money machine to keep supporting the Republican Party. Hastert knew as well as others but let’s not interrupt that money flow.

A few Congressional pages’ innocence didn't matter.

What a shock to see outrage only by female politicians.
So the attitude of the male politicians is that what Foley did is just part of the Good Ole Boys Club.
To all those Good Old Boys: Commiting a crime is illegal whether it is in the military, it business, in the Church, or in politics.
If this is what the "Republican Morality" is all about, then the voters need to clean both the House and the Senate in Nov. 2006.

Will the Ethics Committee ask Rep. Hastert and former staffer Kurt Fordham to submit to polygraph tests?

I hate to sound as if I am defending a sleazy character like Mark Foley, but doesn't anyone know that, in Washington, D.C., the "age of consent" is 16? So, unless any of the pages he hit on were under 16, then what he did is not a criminal act and his "victims" are not children. You cannot persuade me that a "boy" past he age of 16 in this country today does not know exactly what he is doing sexually speaking. So about all you could possibly prosecute Foley for would be abuse of official authority/discretion if any of the young men felt unable to protect themselves because he approached them during business hours and in his capacity as a U.S. Congressman.
