House GOP Campaign Chief Under Fire

October 10, 2006 11:20 AM

ABC News' David Chalian reports: Jack Davis, the wealthy Democratic challenger to NRCC Chairman Tom Reynolds in upstate New York, is launching a television ad today slamming Reynolds for not doing enough to stop Mark Foley.  The opening claim that "Tom Reynolds knew that Congressman Mark Foley was a predator - going after a 16 year old boy," is not supported by the facts since Reynolds says he only learned of the "over friendly" email to the former Louisiana Page in the Spring 2006 and brought it to Speaker Hastert's attention.

Reynolds claims to have had no knowledge of the more sexually explicit messages Foley sent to former pages which led to his resignation.

Davis' ad goes after Reynolds for urging Foley to seek reelection and for accepting $100,000 from Foley.

Reynolds' seat went from a likely Republican seat to a highly competitive toss-up seat after his involvement in the Foley matter became apparent.  Over the weekend, Reynolds launched a television ad in which he appeared talking straight to camera in an attempt to explain his role to his constituents and apologizing, not for anything he did or did not do, but that more was not done in general to stop Foley.

With Republicans fighting to hang on to their majority in the House, having the man in charge of their campaign committee now almost entirely focused on his own reelection should not go unnoticed.

And here's the script:
Tom Reynolds knew that Congressman Mark Foley was a predator - going after a 16 year old boy.
What did he do?
Tom Reynolds urged Foley to seek reelection.
Why?
Because Mark Foley gave over $100,000 to Reynolds' political committee.
And Tom Reynolds needed to keep Foley's seat in Congress, so he kept quiet.
Reynolds says he did nothing wrong.
But when it comes to protecting kids isn't it wrong to do nothing?
Tom Reynolds - wrong on all accounts.
I'm Jack Davis and I approve this message.

This is awful not protecting our children. They care nothing about this all they are worried about is saving their own butts. They all need to go Reynolds, Hasert and Shimkus. This is a disgrace to our country and I would like to know how in good conscience can people re elect these people.

The entire GOP House leadership is deeply involved in this cover up. They care nothing about the young House pages, only about keeping their power and control over the American people. They all need to resign or be voted out of office. What a disgrace to our Democracy and our international reputation.
