Still Standing for the Seat
January 26, 2007 1:30 PM
Miami-based correspondent Jeffrey Kofman blogs:
The November mid-term elections may be a distant memory to most Americans, but the outcome is still TBA in one Congressional District here in Florida.
Republican Vern Buchanan was sworn in earlier this month as the representative of the 13th Congressional District, in Sarasota. But when he took the oath it was noted that his election is still being contested. That's because Democrat Christine Jennings lost by less than 400 votes in a race where voting machines failed to register votes in the congressional race for 18,000 voters in Sarasota County, the Democratic-leaning part of the District. (At left, Hose Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Buchanan earlier this month.)
Did the machines fail? Was the ballot designed badly? Jennings has gone to court to get access to the computer source code for the county's machines. So far state court has ruled against her. This week the court could have denied her appeal, but it didn't. So the Florida 13th is still up for grabs.
Vern Buchanan is clearly getting very comfortable in his new job. So much so that he's already filed for re-election in 2008. Which means he can start collecting campaign funds.
Meanwhile, Jennings was in Washington this week for the President's State of the Union speech, but she was left watching from the House Gallery, the guest of a California Congresswoman. What was she thinking as she looked down at Buchanan in his seat on the floor? (At right, Jennings at the SOTU.)
As for those uncertain Sarasota machines, they won't be used in 2008. Sarasota voters opted to return to a paper ballot. But the machines will be rolled out one more time, on March 13th for local elections.
