Reid Says Iraq War 'Lost'
April 19, 2007 12:56 PM
ABC News' Dean Norland Reports: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., declared the Iraq war lost on Thursday, calling upon President Bush to stop the American troop escalation plan in Iraq.
"You have to make your own decisions about what the President knows, this war is lost, and that the surge is not accomplishing anything, as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq yesterday," said Reid, referring to a series of bombings in Iraq Wednesday that killed almost 200 people -- the deadliest wave of violence since the start of the American troop escalation plan that began less than two months ago.
Reid made the comments during a joint press conference with Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., and Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Democratic state legislators, about their opposition to the President's plan.
Reid, a frequent critic of the President and his conduct of the war in Iraq, likened Bush's troop surge plan to President Lyndon Johnson's failed plan at the end of the Vietnam war.
Senate Republicans reacted angrily to Reid's comments.
"Surely this isn't the consensus position of Senate Democrats," said Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell in a statement released Thursday.
"If Democrats want to end this war, they should vote against funding it," reads McConnell's statement. "But that is not what is going to happen ... they will supply and equip our soldiers to fight a war they think they have already lost."
Reid's comments also drew fire from the Republican National Committee.
"The Democrats are starting to embarrass themselves. Speaker Pelosi travels to Syria and is slapped down by the Washington Post. Leader Reid says the war is lost," said RNC spokesman Dan Ronayne. "It seems like these guys are tripping over themselves running to the left."
Reid's comments reflect a growing unease with the Iraq war among the American public. In the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll released Monday, a slim majority of Americans - 51 percent - now believe the United States will lose the war in Iraq.

I agree with Harry Reid. Bush lied about the war in the first place, and it's too costly in terms of lives and the billions spent monthly. Bush never met a war he didn't like, and would have this war continue until the last one of our men are lost. Let's start spending here at home instead of abroad!

Republicans in general like war because it hides a multitude of sins like greed, incompetence, illegal and immoral activities. They are afraid to stop this war because then questions will be asked that they have no defense for and I think many of them would have to step down from Congress and government service.
So remember America, McCain, Bush and Republicans and their moneygrubbing supporters don't care what happens to us. Killing and locking up 10s of thousands of Iraqis ain't gonna do anything but increase hatred and death of Americans. The war is done, the only thing that will occur now is for it to boil on the stove of stupidity. How will Bush, mcCain and company explain to all the affected families and the rest of the country that death and injury are supportable because they don't want to admit they screwed up royally.

Finally someone has stated the obvious. Nobody, not even republicans, seem committed to win this war. Seems like we content to go through the motions (the "surge") to make appear that we are trying to win, all the while knowing that after the surge fails we'll be able to pull out and blame the Iraqi government. Put another 500,000 US troops in and we could turn Iraq around...but lets not kid ourselves, nobody would ever support that commitment level for a lie. We should pull out and use the resources to fight terrorism...GWB lost his way.

Wow. If this does not show who the Democratic party is nothing will. The voters had the wool pulled over their eyes this last election buy the DNC attempting to show a moderate face. That is certainly out the window now. Make the Democratic pay in 2008.

Facts are facts...and it's time that bush and company faced reality...personally, my vote would be to "de=fund" all combat, supplying monies only for security and withdrawal...and them i'd be offering up article of impeachment against bush, cheney and the whole lot...a full scale house cleaning is seriously overdue.

I don't think so much that this "war" is lost. Lets call it what it really was...a Police action. We went into a smaller, not nearly so well-armed, or trained country, and took it over in 3 weeks, effectively changing it overnight. that being said, it was a bad idea from the start, and continues to be a bad idea today.
The plan was not well thought out, or concieved. Personally, I believe the administration lied intentionally about the evidence they used to support the invasion, and continue to this day to lie about conditions there.
We aren't losing a war, because, this really wasn't a war..its been exactly what Bush said he WOULDN'T do in 2000's election campaign, and I quote, "We should not be the world's policeman, because other countries wouldn't like it."
He should've stuck to what he said, if he had, we wouldn't be in the mess we are in today.

Reid seldom utters inspired or even coherent thoughts, but in this he is absolutely correct. The American military is impotent in this fight. Events are out of its control. Even if it was possible to win, the military cannot manage this conflict. In fact, it has already lost the war Bush started. Through no fault of its own, the military was caught completely off guard and unprepared for the style of violence that happened after the invasion. And from the start, the incompetent politics of conquest and reconstruction, both American and Iraqi, worked against success and abetted corruption. Like it or not, this one is another failed effort. Its time to leave those oil ambitions behind and get the troops out of Iraq now.

I was not for this war but we are there. For Mr. Reid to disagree and change policy displomatically in private is one thing but to state these things publically is almost traitorous to the troops ... I can't begin to imagine the depths of frustration and betrayal they must feel ... and how elated our enemies are.

Anybody who doesn't watch Fox News knows that the war has been lost. Reid just stated the obvious and the 35% of Americans who are living in la la land are too delusional to admit the war is lost.

You are out of your minds. This war cannot be won in 3 or 4 or 10 years.
Winning this war is not like previous wars. It is a psychological war, a war about ideology. Islam cannot be defeated by war alone. The people of Iraq need to win this war not just the Americans.
Posted by: Kottaras | Apr 19, 2007 5:14:18 PM
By what measure does he consider the war lost? It's pathetic to see our leadership use the best interests of our nation in an effort to appease a leftist base. You just don't decide to quit and come home like you've lost at the club. There will be consequences. And it is becoming painfully obvious that a Democratic administration will be incapable of dealing with anything other than waving a white flag. You cannot judge the measure of this war by the violence in Baghdad no more than you can judge the United States by the tragedy of Virginia Tech.
If our society doesn't grow a backbone soon, God help us.

Look, you guys--Korean Conflict,
Vietnam, and now Iraq--all perfect examples of how our govt., both Rep. AND Dem., still can't learn how to fight wars that are primarily guerrilla tactics. Almost 50 years have gone by AND NO ONE has yet come up with a new approach. Shouldn't we ask our think tank people instead of old fuddy-duddies from Bush Sr./s administration?? Isn't there at least one brilliant mind at the
military academies our tax dollars
pay for? Fight and talk, I say.

Everybody look around yourself. You would not find truth by watching the news media. War is lost. Our national budget deficit is soaring with no limits. Who is going to pay for it? Islam is not religion of violence but peace. You will not be able to know truth about Islam from news media. You have to actively search for it.

i just read replies about reids comments. this is my reply to you sir.
there is no condition that can exist on the ground that we can claim a victory! this war has since long been lost. we must evaluate the lessons learned and never let this happen again. ironically, there are a few generals who were lieutenants in vietnam that said the same thing. their names are Colin Powell and Norman Schwarzkopf. They executed the first gulf war flawlessly.
to all of you who think that we in the military feel betrayed...wake up. we're not brainwashed soldiers who blindly follow immoral leaders. bush is our Cmdr in chief and we must execute those orders as we are trained. but we are well educated and WELL in tune to what goes on behind the scenes and on the political front. i personally feel betrayed by my Cmdr in chief for lying to this country and misleading us into this war. yet i serve my time proudly and with honor but not without logical thought and selfless service.
in the military there is a chain of command that must be followed under the uniform code of military justice(ucmj). this means that the decisions a commander makes whether they are right or wrong he is responsible and is held accountable. our Cmdr in chief, bush, ultimately made the decision to take us to war, but not without some ill-advised subordinates(cheney, rumsfield, wolfowitz, rice). in the end, in accordance with the ucmj, the commander is held responsible. now you see why bush wants a war czar. personally i'm tired of deploying and leaving my family for an unjust war! imagine sir, tomorrow you go to a battle zone and won't see your family for as much as 15 months...if you get to see them at all, and this is your third trip.

George Bush did not attack Iraq.. The United States and a coalition of allies attacked Iraq. It was a by partisan decision by a large majority. The attack was decided upon by both parties after about a dozen UN resolutions and the information about Iraq's WMDs came from 2 democrat led bureaucracies. The CIA led by George Tenet and The FBI Led by Lewis Freeh not to mention half a dozen foreign intelligence agencies and some Iraqi scientists. It was not because of 911 as the Democrat leadership has twisted it.
No Bush didn't lie. The Democrats are lying constantly and pathologically. If you fall for their lies you will end up loosing your 2nd amendment and then all the others. Because the 2nd one is the only reason you have the others now.
Remember ---we can pull out of Iraq but if we do we might have to end up pulling out of the US. Anyone who thinks you can just walk away from this war is living in the video game world.
Just because we haven't found the WMD's in any large quantity so far does not mean they don't exist. There are thousands of dead Iranian troops because Sadam used poison gas on them. It is just as insane to say that Sadam had no WMD's as it would be to say jack the ripper never had a knife because we can't find it. What kind of fools are you to insist that your kids, your selves or your fellow Americans be bombed by atomic weapons , slaughtered by biological agents or killed in an atomic blast in your own land before you will forget your selfish agendas. There is a good chance that you will find the WMD's soon if we do not stand together. The worst part is you might find them in your home town.
In my opinion Harry Reed is a traitor who is more interested in his own position and power than he is in the security of the country. these Muslim extremists have no scruples. They are exactly like wolves. They do not hesitate to kill their own children in order to have the thrill of killing you.
Those of you who think it is safe to quit this war are being led by a clever bunch of fools who are expert at twisting words and polls. Time and again Harry Reed quotes a poll that says a large amount of Americans are tired of this war and want it to end. This is true. If asked the question [ do you want to loose the war?] The answerers would be 90% no. If the question was [ are you willing to suffer the consequences of quitting now ?] the answer would be 95% no.
Quitting a war does not result in the same consequences as quitting a football game. You had best begin thinking for yourselves. Harry isn't doing to good.

DUH! ALL recent Pentagon and DOD papers support the Speakers conclusions. For those of you not in the DOD or services do some research. We here are saying the same thing only with actual findings. Christ a 5 yr old knows the score here. The current administration is simply being obstinate to say the least.

You mean like the War on Drugs? Or were you referring to the War on Poverty? Or how about the War on Terror? They all fit the same description......unwinnable. BUT they bring in lots of government $$$, which is why they were created in the first place. War is good for business, regardless of what kind of crap you attach to it.

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry ... I'll bet you listen to Rush Limbaugh every day, don't you?
Practical Americans (those without a political axe to grind) would say, "Don't throw good money after bad". I support our troops, and supported George Bush when he said we needed to go in & attack Iraq - until we found no WMD; until we found out that the administration had no clear strategy for post-war Iraq; until we found that no one in the administration understands just what kind of enemy we're up against. The short native texan had it right: no one has yet come up with a way to win these guerilla wars, and until they do, we will keep pouring more $$ into Iraq - and taking more bodies of gallant U.S. servicemen out.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
While away from my wife and two children,at Warrior Leadership school with 160 other non-commisioned officers.I am ashamed that my "LEADERS" make comments like this.

The Democrats have now opened up America to destruction. By telling every terrorist in the world that "We have lost", The Democrats have basically invited them all to come over here and turn America into a wasteland of bombings, killings, and total anarchy. I hope you Democratic bucket-carriers are ready for planet of the apes.
