Clinton Thanks Staff, Law Enforcement After Hostage Crisis Resolved
November 30, 2007 2:14 PM
ABC News' Kate Snow and Jennifer Parker Report: Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., emerged from her Washington, D.C. home Friday night to thank her campaign staff and law enforcement officials for resolving the hostage situation in her Rochester, New Hampshire campaign office.
"This has been a difficult day personally and emotionally," Clinton told reporters camped outside her Washington, D.C. home.
"I was in touch during the day with the families of those who were held hostage," she said, saying that was the hardest part of an ordeal that lasted all afternoon.
"I really commend their extraordinary courage under, again, very difficult circumstances."
Clinton was scheduled to speak at the Democratic National Committee Fall meeting Friday afternoon but canceled her appearance after members of her Rochester, N.H., campaign staff were taken hostage by a man with what appeared to be a bomb strapped to his chest.
"Everything stopped and it had to because we had nothing on our minds except for the safety of these young people that work for me," she said.
Saying it had been a hard day for everyone involved in her campaign, Clinton thanked young staffers and volunteers who work on presidential campaigns.
"Every four years extraordinary young people come to places like New Hampshire to campaign because they want to change our country," she said, "they work around the clock and are so committed to their cause."
The Senator thanked local law enforcement officials in New Hampshire and the FBI, who she said lent expertise and help during the hostage situation.
Clinton said she was on her way to New Hampshire to personally thank the law enforcement officials involved with resolving the hostage crisis.
"I'm especially just relieved to have this situation end so peacefully," she said.

This is way the police should handle situations like this one. Why did not the police handle the Black teen killed in Brooklyn, NY holding a hair brush in this manner, instead a senseless murder of the youth. A man strap with a bomblike device to his body was capture unharmed.

I am very happy that we have the quality and the trained police that we have in NH, especially the SWAT team from the NH State Police. In NH the police try hard not to get anyone killed, including the perpetrator. That is far different than other's it seems.

concordan, I'm here in NH too. I'm very happy that all is well, and it does seem like New Hampshire in general has a certain sane and steady approach to a crisis. This was hard on all of us yesterday, as we're all political junkies and most of us volunteer for campaigns. Thank you to America, for all the good thoughts that were sent New Hampshire's way yesterday.

Talk about over-reaction and spin. It's a joke to compare this type of situation with the crises faced by a President. And what did Hillary really do, anyway, that any other candidate would not have done? She did what anyone would have done: she cancelled her public appearances, and then made some well scripted statements. She had nothing to do with how the situation was managed, and had no influence over the final outcome. That's the exact opposite of what a president would encounter. To compare this to 9/11 and what Giuliani had to handle is absurd. To compare this to any commander-in-chief scenario is absurd. Hillary did not look presidential; if that's presidential, then that's setting the bar rather low. What is revealing is how she seeks to exploit this rather bizarre situation for her own political gain.

@angelheart: good question - bush is so able to get his way that i don't know if he will ever face the legal consequences so so so due him but i wouldn't want to have his karma - no one escapes causality in the long run -

Some guy with a few flares holds a small group hostage in an office and some people in NH think it ranks with 9-11. Get real.
REALITY: a presidential hopeful HIDES at home during the 'crisis' and works on the best way to exploit and spin the events... Clinton/CNN were gleeful.
Cowering in her house all day long, avoiding the media, canceling events? That is NOT leadership! Clinton only really cared about her own SAFETY/image.
