Obama: Immigration Has Become a 'Political Football'
January 31, 2008 12:02 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Immigration and racial issues led the discussion during Sen. Barack Obama’s town hall in Los Angeles today.
Speaking before a crowd of 1,600 predominately Hispanics, Obama addressed the issue of immigration being used as a “political football.”
Watch the video HERE.
“Too many Americans today feel like the system is not designed for people like us,” Obama told the crowd.
Obama referenced the discussion over race, and the alleged “black- brown divide” that has plagued discussions on the camping trail in states like Nevada and South Carolina -– where pundits questioned whether Obama could get Hispanic voters and white voters to vote for him.
“We've heard some cynical talk about how black folks and white folks and Latinos cannot come together. We've heard it before,” Obama said, emphasizing his time as community working with all three groups.
Obama said he’s been upset with the tone of the immigration debate in this country and then went into a history lesson about immigration in the country.
“Not everybody who came in through Ellis Island had their papers in order. I’m just telling the truth now. Not everybody was all – you know – all had their stuff together, so we just need to remember that.”
Obama reminded the crowd that it wasn’t only people “South of the Border” that were discriminated against, but the Irish and Polish too, and said that because of that it’s important to have a intelligent debate about immigration that is “not tinged with our attitudes of what people should look like who came here.”
The Senator –- son of a Kenyan man and white woman from Kansas finished, “Cause my attitude is everybody should come here. My father when he came here - he didn’t look like he stepped off the Mayflower, you know.”
Obama, who is in support of comprehensive immigration reform, also added that part of that reform includes immigrants learning English, a topic he’s spoken out many times in support of in the past.
“Of course, I need to learn Spanish,” Obama added to a round of applause from the Hispanic crowd, “So we can teach each other.”
Immigration will be a theme that will dominate much of the remaining days leading up to Super Tuesday for Obama -- tomorrow he heads to Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Wow..Talk about pandering.. Obama is a pro... He has flip flopped on Immigration and subsequent issues whenever he feels the need to court Spanish speaking people for their vote. Just because they speak a different language, I am pretty sure they are intelligent enough to see through his rhetoric.

Hillary received more votes in Florida alone than Sen. (Barack) Obama received in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.
Explain that Obama BOTS

What amazes me is that only now is Obama talking about giving drivers licenses to illegal aliens when he played it way down before Iowa and New Hampshire. I wonder why? Why is the press not asking him why he hid this position?

Not sure WHERE your getting your numbers LOL NOT from the State of Flordia .... try adding ALL state votes cast and see what number you come up with...same one ALL news venues are stating when it comes to the popular vote...... sad that you feel the need to defend a position that holds no water.....

That seals it...Obama will never get my vote. I guess his pro-illegal immigrant stance is why King Amnesty, Teddy Kennedy, endorsed him.

What Obama and most people in this country forget, is that Spanish was spoken here before anybody stepped off the Mayflower. That is history. McCain realizes and I hope that Obama does too, that something must be done to legalize the immigrants in this country. 70% of these immigrants work in agriculture providing cheap food for American tables. The government makes some high profile raids in meat processing plants or construction sites but, why don't they raid the fields where most of them work? We all benefit from their sweat and yet we pretend that they don't exist.

Deanna, what in God's name are you talking about? I got these final numbers from the Sate of Florida Democratic party election commission. There are no other numbers for Florida.
Please show me a link where Obama received over 900,000 votes in Florida. You are talking complete nonsense and gibberish????

Another person arrested in the Obama scandal. This is going to get good. The person is a Iraq-born billionaire Nadhmi Auchi with ties to REZKO

Not that much different between Obama, Clinton, McCain, or Huckabee on immigration. It's an issue that's going to have to be faced. Obama, in consort with McCain introduced a good compromise bill, but even though it passed the Senate, it failed in committee. I'm sure it will be resurrected once again.

Sen. Obama has said since the debate where Sen. Clinton tripped over the issue that he supports issuing driver's licenses to illegals as a matter of national security. (I happen to agree.) I don't know why he didn't correct her last night but guess he didn't want to get into the "did" "did not" "did too" nonsense.
And as to the proposed immigration bill, what alternative (other than pathway to citizenship) do you propose? As Obama has pointed out on other occasions, our national prison population is something like 2-3 million ... so what are we supposed to do with the 12 million illegals who would be rounded up if the alternative approach were taken - even if they were held only a short time for processing? There are other problems, but that alone is a stumper. For any solution to work, however, it's first necessary to secure the borders, as Obama pointed out last night. I guess I'm just saying that basing one's vote on any candidate's stand on imigration you should look beyond the words to see if the solution they propose has any prayer of working in real life.

As much as I would like to see every illegal alien deported, the reality is that it is not feasible to do so, it would take over a decade and cost thousands per deportation.
Some will be deported. Some will pay the fine get a green card, learn english and spend 3-5 years to become naturalized citizens. Some will self deport. The key to his plan is to dry up the opportunity. Securing the border to such a degree as to promise no crossings will occur is also not a feasible solution.
As far as Florida, it doesn't count, Clinton knew that when she went there, it is easy to win a contest where you run un-opposed. She broke a rule when she went there and campaigned, she continues to show how the rules should not apply to her in demanding that the delegates now be counted. IF the count is close at the convention, she already has lawyers in place to argue the Michigan and Florida votes be counted, thereby undermining her own party for her own glorification. Given the choice between the two, I'll take Obama.

Only someone who has experienced the issues that minorities face, can truly understand, heal, and bring real solutions to the problems of the minorities. OBAMA is the only candidate that has a life time experience on this issue. Go Obama!

Obama has a lifetime of experience dealing with the issues of minorities. You might need to actually learn about the background of your prep school candidate.
For those of you with short memories, we did try amnesty in 1986 or so. That's when there were 4 million illegal immigrants and before amnesty was a dirty word. That was also championed by Kennedy (who swore) he'd never ask for another amnesty bill. So, his creditability is worth zilch to me.
Guess what happened? Once the illegal immigrants became legal - they expected a living wage. American employers weren't about to do that, so --> in came more illegal immigrants.
I'm beginning to see a pattern. People who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it. If employers were going to behave they would use one of the 12 existing guest worker programs that currently exist.
We already have one for agricultural workers. But, guess what? Employers don't use it. It requires paperwork and guess what else, a living wage and rights for immigrant workers.

Obama will open the borders to Mexicans and Africans.
He will try and destroy this country.
Americans DO NOT WANT TRIBAL people flooding this country.
There is a reason why we don't allow tons of foreigners in.
Obama will let criminals and tribal people in that can't conform to western ways.
Look at blacks. They still struggle.

Racist @#$%!. This american doesnt want YOU in this country. 'Tribal' people occupied this land long before you! You make me ashamed to be anywhere near the color white.
Also; I'd wager that I know more undocumented workers than you- so learn something:
1) Undocumented typically work 60+hrs a week at 2 or 3 different jobs to meet basic needs (do u even work?)
2) Because of a false SS# they pay at maximum bracket-at least 4x as much tax as the average american (you cheat on your taxes dont you?), and they can't get ANY credits or refunds (I bet you rec'd a nice little bonus this year, eh?).
3) They are not eligible for social benefits in case of unemployment (you get welfare dont you?)
4) Undocumented workers cannot receive even half the medical benefits you could (none in most states now) if you needed medical help (you get medicaid dont you?)
5) They CHOOSE to come here, they were not born here by geographical chance- they should be congratulated on a good choice (where were your parents parents parents from? did they have papers? or did they kill a few natives for the 'right'? or are you cherokee? inuit? navajo?...i didnt think so, maybe you should leave...)
6) They are discriminated against by schmucks like you and they STILL LOVE AMERICA! No undocumented worker I have known has EVER said anything bad about the US. Although they do have sad tales about mistreatment from people like you, they actually like it here...
7) No terrorist has EVER been an undocumented worker- terrorists are always GIVEN permission by the US government to come.
8) They are NOT taking your job from you- do you wash dishes? gardner? janitor? pick strawberries?? (oh i forgot, you dont even want a job...)
8) They dance better than you (stop do-se-doing ya hillbilly!)
As a caucasian PhD in health sciences I am often doing clinical research in the hospital...80% of junkies here are WHITE! Over 60% of handcuffed patients are WHITE! 90% of the welfare applicants are WHITE! Ready to be amazed? This city is only 45% white!!! Way to go! You are NOT making me proud. MOST Americans, fortunately are of similar mind, and think you racist types are trash.
Undocumented workers WORK, and they work hard. They don't complain, they love their families, they are polite, they pay into the system and get nothing back. THEY ARE THE BEST AMERICANS IN THE USA!!!
Want to be a good American? Don't deny any group their basic human rights. Perhaps if the US hadnt deported hundreds of thousands of undocumented workers this past year alone then the economy wouldn't be in a crisis!
