Reid on Obama and Clinton: 'I Need Them Back'

January 31, 2008 6:41 AM

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: Senate Democrats held a special meeting Thursday to decide on two bills both with a deadline of February 15. In between now and then...is Super Tuesday.

No final decisions on either the FISA update bill or the economic stimulus package were reached, but afterwards on the Senate floor Majority Leader Harry Reid implied there won't be action on either item till next week. Not only does he need to woo Republican support to get the 60 votes needed to pass versions the Democrats prefer on both matters, but he needs to marshal his troops. Specifically, those conspicuously absent from the Senate with a case of '08.

"I probably can't get them back here 'til Monday, but I do need them back," Reid said of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., the two Democrats vying for their party's presidential nomination. Other Democrats, notably Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass, hit the campaign trail as a surrogate for Obama.

He said the FISA update would take one "long legislative day" but could be accomplished.

He was even more cryptic about the stimulus.

Since there are two full weeks between now and Feb. 15th, it's unclear why Reid would hold the votes before the February 5 Super Tuesday primary.

Yeah i know why...the less time ppl get to hear from Barack, the less they know about him and the less likely they are to vote for him. Yep.

It's been proven that the more people learn about Obama the more they support him. Hillary? Not so much.

exactly, uzoma! reid's not as slick as he thinks he is. he got away with changing the timing on the iran resolution, but folks know the deal this time. woo, those clintons and their puppets play dirty!

Didn't Reid do this when Obama was campainging Iowa? Hillary "happened" to be in D.C. at the time and it appeared to look like Obama was ducking a vote. Reid and Hillary are just alike.

The real question, is Reid going to cave in and protect the telecom industry by passing the buck to the government [whom the telecom industry trusted (Bush) in good faith]?

That will be the probable deal, and if so, we might as well live in a po, well, we will, a police state.

This idea that innocent Americans will not be targeted is nuts. And for that matter, why were thousands targeted prior to 9/11? What was Bush looking for? That question still has not been answered.

What a wonderful way for government employees to snoop on their neighbors, or corporations to snoop on their competitors.

Could we bet that some of those illegal taps were thousands of people who have been protestors?

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

"A return to Senator Clinton's cattle-futures deal, Travelgate, Whitewater, Filegate, the Lincoln Bedroom Fire Sale, Pardongate — and the inevitable replay of the Monica Mess? No, thank you," the paper wrote.

Reid needs to stop caring about passing bad bills the Republicans like. You're not the Republican leader, Harry. We didn't vote for bad Republican-leaning compromises in November 2006.

The best FISA outcome is no bill at all- thus reverting to the original pre-Bush FISA. And passing no "stimulus" bill at all is better than the wasteful crap the Republicans want, which won't give any money to the people who actually need to spend it.

I think there's a typo - shouldn't it be Reid saying "I Need A Back", i.e. "I Need a Spine", or "I Need the Courage To Do What is Right When It's So Much More Difficult To Do What is Wrong", or perhaps, "I Need To Resign as Majority Leader". Not that I'm bitter or anything. :)

Well since Nancy Pelosi is for Obama, maybe she can overrule Reid. He is obviously trying to undermine the Obama campaign for his buddy Bill. Reid knows very well this could wait until Feb 6. He tried this before in Iowa. Pathetic. Democrats are spineless weasels. The best they can do in 28 yrs is Bill Clinton. And even that was a gift from Ross Perot.

I wouldn't put my hopes in Polls at this point. The race is much closer than the Polls may suggest.

The polls showed Obama leading Hillary in NH by about 10 points but she ended up winning the popular vote( but not the delegate count) and Polls showed Obama leading by about 8 points in SC but his win was actually by 28 points.

Another interesting thing to analyze is the FL vote. Though Hillary won, Obama actually won the vote for all those who cast their votes on 1/29 and within the past week. Interesting, huh!

This race is all about how many delegates they can grab. The race will continue beyond SUPER TUESDAY!!

The poll data above is out of date. Obama has closed to 6 points in CA and 3 points in MA as of yesterday. With no Edwards, people will look in the mirror and either vote for yesterday or for tomorrow. My hope is tomorrow wins.

Anyone see this about ole Bill undermining his wife? And supporting the despot running Kazachstan?

**Why not? We elected an inexperienced, cocaine-snorting, born-again christian to be our president. TWICE!

I read these comments and I see what is wrong with this country. Way too many idiots running around.

"I read these comments and I see what is wrong with this country. Way too many idiots running around. "

Even worse... they vote.

They should be voting in the Senate, that's their job.

Why should we elect either of them for President if they're not doing the job they are currently elected for now?

Posted by: Terri | Jan 31, 2008 11:18:43 AM

Both of these candidates say they are leaders. Perhaps they could show us how they intend to lead by actually doing it in the offices to which they have been elected. Perhaps Obama could show us how he will enact that wonderful bi-partisanship by doing it now with the FISA bill. I mean we're only talking about our constitution and the rule of law here. Guess that's not as exciting as all those crowds of adoring potential voters screaming O-BAM-A.

Terri:

Would you like for us to elect you for president instead of Obama or Clinton? In fact, are you doing your job? If so, then you either took a break to write your nonsensical e-mail, or you're not doing your job....huh?

Posted by: tony | Jan 31, 2008 12:10:19 PM

Jen:

I agree with you.....

Posted by: tony | Jan 31, 2008 12:12:05 PM

Well Harry...

...They (and we)need you for a few things too.

...Too bad you caved to King George II and his idiot regime every time there was a fight in 2007.

I think Senator Reid needs to realize that at this point, he and Speaker Pelosi have to focus on holding the fort in Washington as best they can in the face of the Bush administration's partisan obstructionism and corruption. The best thing they can do for their party is to give their remaining presidential candidates as much time as possible in the field, courting voters ... especially the independents and the disgruntled ex-Republicans who will be so crucial to pulling off a win in November. I think Speaker Pelosi has figured this out, but perhaps Reid is slow off the mark in this regard.

Seriously, if the deadline is February 15th for these votes, then it makes best sense to hold them after Tsunami Tuesday. Since the next primaries/caucuses after the 5th are on the 9th, 10th, and 12th, it should be possible to schedule the Senate votes for sometime in the 6th-8th time window. Really, it would be in Reid's best interest to do that, for his party's sake. But then, he's never struck me as being quite as sensible as some of the other Democrats.
