Tonight, I watched the Lou Dobbs report on CNN and saw, once again, that life long Democrats, usually in their 50's or older, are renouncing their ties to the Democratic Party.

In growing numbers, senior, middle class Democrats (one of the largest voting blocs) are becoming disillusioned with the party's recent direction and are replacing their party affiliation with "Independent."

These new Independent voters view an Obama candidacy as a hostile takeover of the Democratic Party, a coup with the potential installation of a left-wing, minority regime.

Members of this group will not usually specifiy who they WILL support, but they WILL NOT support another bid by an extreme Democratic candidate.

While some may view such statements as mere speculation or attempts to derail the aspect of an Obama candidacy, I believe that the trend is real and growing exponentially.

From personal experience, I believe it to be true. Today, after being a registered Democrat for over 34 years, I filled out a new voter registration card and changed my affiliation to "Independent."

Ken, couldn't agree more. in my state (texas), we don't officially indicate our party affiliation, but we are still renouncing our ties. along with everyone i know who is 50+ and a lifelong dem voter, i have made it clear that i will vote for mccain this fall. our party has betrayed us one too many times, either by selecting the most unelectable candidate possible (like mcgovern, for whom i voted and who won only one state), or by selecting the candidate whose views are so far to the left as to offend those of us who are more moderate or centrist in our democratic views (like obama). there comes a time when one must realize that loyalty just for loyalty's sake makes no sense. the democratic party has taken us for granted, and ignored our views, for far too long. we will no longer accept it. perhaps they will finally get the message when mccain wins in a landslide in a year in which the democrats had to work really, really hard to find a way to lose. if that happens and the democratic party learns something, it will be worth it. if not, we will be in for more decades of republican domination of the white house and the democratic party will have only itself to blame.

For all those Democrats who wouldn't vote for Obama just know that there are just as many who won't vote for Hillary. And more Independents would (and are) voting for Obama. That's why all the Republicans want Hillary to win...it will be a shoe in for McCain. Be careful what you ask for!

Wow, Eric is such a genius. But I just have to say, I am a lifelong Democrat and I am just so concerned about the direction that Obama is taking the party. How can we possibly win with such a candidate? If he wins, I'll renounce my party affiliation! I think you are mistaken if you think the people posting here are not real. I have talked to hoards of REAL LIVE Hillary supporters. With the exception of one person the rest will either vote Hillary as a write-in if she doesn't win or vote for McCain right out. I myself will vote Hillary as a write-in. I don't wish to send a message by voting republican, I will simply send my message as being a vote for the candidate I feel would do the best job for the country. If this benefits McCain, so be it. I will not vote for someone I believe is incapable of running our country.

While I am not criticizing anyone's right to vote write-ins, I think it is important that we know what that really means. Per election law, any candidate who seeks a party nomination and does not get it cannot declare themselves a write-in candidate. The only write-in votes that are counted are the ones that have official document declarations accepted for the associated polling locations. So, if you vote for any party candidate as a write-in, ou effectively are not voting.
