When Pledged Delegates Aren't
February 19, 2008 10:05 AM
Senior Political Correspondent and Political Punch author Jake Tapper blogs:
Our friend Roger Simon has a juicy little column in this morning's Politico where he reports on the Clinton campaign's push not just for superdelegates but regular, pledged delegates.
Whether or not they know it, those delegates purportedly elected to represent the will of the voters of their home states and districts can actually vote any way they want. And according to Simon, "Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign intends to go after delegates whom Barack Obama has already won in the caucuses and primaries if she needs them to win the nomination.
“I swear it is not happening now, but as we get closer to the convention, if it is a stalemate, everybody will be going after everybody’s delegates,” a senior Clinton official told Simon yesterday. “All the rules will be going out the window.”
The Obama campaign responded harshly this morning.

More Spin from the OBAMA CAMPAIGN about CLINTON supposedly ("on an anonymous source" --deep inside Obama HQ) trying to woo away pledged or super delegates. By now, I hope EVERYBODY knows that it is the Obama camp that has RUTHLESSLY gone after delegates--playing all kinds of bully-boy games. Obama has now spent how much on the superdelegates? A cool milllion? Clinton has spent--what? $250K. Never mind threatening Clinton delegate/supporters with Obama financed primary challenges. Jesse Jackson Jr. is the foulest political operative there is. UUUgghh.

I think this is delicious: Clinton supporters accusing Obama supporters of doing the same thing they are doing. Clinton can't stand a fair fight & it's been showing ever since she discovered she can't win fairly. How justice is being served here. It's time Bill step up & declare he's now the true candidate. That'll be the last straw. Democrats, you did it to yourselves...

Actually this is not entirely accurate. In Connecticut, according to the state Democratic Party rules, Democratic pledged delegate allocations are "binding". This is fully and finally determined by the primaries result (not the state convention or any other process) and cannot be changed. I suspect there will be other states with similar rules.
