Live Blogging from the Democratic Debate.

April 16, 2008 5:52 PM

Senior Political Reporter Rick Klein live blogs tonight's Democratic Presidential Debate hosted by ABC News, the National Constitution Center and WPVI-TV:

Liveblogging218x155 Greetings from Philadelphia's Constitution Center. For you star-watchers, tonight's (cozy) crowd of 573 will include: Ted Danson, Richard Dreyfuss, and  Harvey Weinstein, in addition to famous-for-politics folks including Chelsea Clinton, Wes Clark, Gov.  Jon Corzine, Gov. Ed Rendell, and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter. Bill Clinton will not be in  attendance. Stephen Colbert wants in -- and the Constitution Center has scared up a ticket for him. (True story.)

Now for business: I wrote in this morning's Note that Barack Obama may have more pressure on him than Hillary Clinton. What I mean by that is, he's the one who has had big new questions about his  candidacy emerge in recent weeks. He's the one who's going to be in the spotlight (and Hillary Clinton will make sure that's the case). He's got to show he can close the deal.

I just saw a breaking news alert indicating that Barack Obama earned $4.2 million last year. That's a nice paycheck, and a rather breathtaking number based on two years in the Senate. This far outrivals anything that the Clinton's earned at this stage of their careers. I'd like to hear his explanations about this.

I am a thirteen year old girl, and I would just like to say that I think it's sad that Clinton has to bash Obama every chance she gets. She's just looking for a way to dig up dirt, and this is not a clean way to run a campaign. Well,I'm not falling for it, and I'd like to see Hillary's explanations to the sniper fire in Bosnea and explain how she thinks her husband is being supportive when the whole escipade with Monica is still up in the air. I'd like to see her explanation to that. Senator Obama, I'm not old enough to vote yet, but if I had a choice, I'd vote for you.

Both candidates look rested and so far are polite and well spoken..staying with issues, not personality punches.

Posted by: corie | Apr 16, 2008 8:25:21 PM

Instead of worrying about trivial matters like what Sen Obama mis said or What Sen Clinton mis said, why aren't the moderators asking more important questions like how any president can occomplish any well intended programs they might want to see implemented when we have a congress that is only interested in special interest groups. No president can get anything done to balance the budget, shore up social security, make higher education more affordible for all americans, or universal health care unless we vote out every incumbant in congress so we can get fresh people in congress and the senate that are devoted to the people and not their own interest in their own power.

Regarding the elitist issue - I don't want a candidate who is not a bit elitist. I don't want a candidate who has a 186 bowling average or is a crack shot with a rifle. I don't think it is important that those contending for the presidency know the price of a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk. Our candidates should not be living in fear of foreclosure or providing health care for their families. They need to be above the fray and in a position where they can objectively view the problems that face "ordinary" Americans and respond in a way that provides solutions that benefit the country as a whole.

I don't want Larry the Cable Guy or Roseanne leading our nation. Yes, our candidates and future leaders should be individuals who have elevated themselves to positions of self-reliance and extraordinary confidence and, yes, a bit egotistical perhaps. We deserve nothing less.

who does she think she is?

The US had made great strides as far as race relations, but how has the campaign affected your relationship with your wife (Obama) due to the fact that you would be the first Minority president? Would you request more protection due the fact that we are not yet walking in the dream of Dr. King?

obama said that of course rev. wright was patriotic, he was a marine. well so was lee harvey oswald and look what he did!

ayers was a terrorist, why would you be friendly to a known domestic terrorist. obama is a lier!

Obama may not wear a flag pin, but why doesn't he put his hand over his heart while the national anthium is played?

Posted by: addie | Apr 16, 2008 8:45:55 PM

What are her (your) plans to assist the Katrina victims that are still not properly assisted? Many of them are still not back in New Orleans and still do not have proper housing? What are you planning to do to rectify the most lies and promises for African Americans from New Orleans? What do you plan to do to preent the racial profiling that is curently being done to keep them from moving back into their neighborhoods?

I am watching the debate and all I have seen is what I said earlier. The moderators don't want to talk about the real issues that affect our country and only want to create controversy. Could it be that they are republicans in disguise and are trying to sabotage the democratic nominee? How about questions on health care, social security, education, ending the war, jobs which are the real issues.

Posted by: Joe | Apr 16, 2008 8:50:32 PM

ABC should be ashamed. You have spent 50 minutes focusing on matters that are irrelevant. Your agenda is creating headlines, focusing on stupid mistakes both candidates have made.

I'm gone for good from ABC Network News.

Posted by: Anne | Apr 16, 2008 8:51:40 PM

Why is this debate getting a 3-hour tape delay on the Westcoast? Old-school ABC media execs? Time for a change in two places.

Posted by: Juan | Apr 16, 2008 8:52:10 PM

I am so tired of hearing about the mis-steps of the candidates and making them explain themselves. I want to hear about the issues. Besides, I would just like to say, that I don't blame Rev. Write for what he said. I am a white middle class young woman who comes from a very working class background. I am in graduate school studying psychology, and I work with at-risk kids in the schools. I have seen so much poverty and injustice and I understand bitterness towards the United States. Our country is being very poorly run--our economy is a mess, the poor are getting poorer, and we are caught in a war that we cannot get out of, meanwhile our kids are suffering. Through institutional classism and racism our country suppresses minorities & the poor and uneducated, denying proper health care and education, creating a culture of violence, poverty, drugs and crime, and then punishing people who are in terrible situations for engaging behaviors that are essentially predetermined for them by circumstance and lack of opportunities. We need to see some Major Changes!! I understand Rev. Write's anger, I get pretty angry myself. Besides, I feel that sometimes you have to get angry to make an impact, you cannot sit by complacently and let injustice rule.

As an American citizen watching these debates, I have to admit that George and Charlie are the worst moderators that I have seen in any of these debates. Guys, let's get to the real issues the American people want to talk about rather than bringing up "dirt" time and time again. You seem to be out of touch with what really interest the American people--let's talk issues, not the attacks and the dirt of the past. Move on fellows, you are doing an injustice not only to this debate but to the democratic party. The media people need to get to the real issues the American people want to hear.

I want to see a governmental apology for the LYME DISEASE EXPERIMENT,This experiment have left many of our lives ruined. and we need full medical care. our government is also responsible for the gyspy moth experiment and should pay for irradication, not city's state or homeowners.

We are finally hearing some real issue questions. Why did it take an hour to get to this point. I still want to know how either of them intend to get anything thru congress with the present membership who only engage in lip service to the problems in this country and blame the other side for their inability to get anything done. It might be time to elect a lot of independents into congress to break the stalemate that exists.

Posted by: Joe | Apr 16, 2008 9:28:25 PM

Why is the peace between Israel and Palastine out of the debate? This is the most critical issue in the diddle east, yet no one is willing to ask the question.

Posted by: AG | Apr 16, 2008 9:41:02 PM

I think this debate was miss-handled by the moderators. The questions they asked where trivial and biased. All of the real issues in this campaign were ignored and the American people were again exposed to a process that in large part is controlled by the media. ABC should be ashamed for airing such meaningless drivel during a time that this country need honest debate and exchange of ideas. How low can media outlet like ABC go? It happened tonight!

Posted by: David | Apr 16, 2008 10:56:08 PM

I am absolutely disgusted by tonight's Presidential Debate. I can not believe how obviously biased in Hillary Clinton's favor the moderators were. The entire first hour was spent dealing with trivia and innuendo rather that focusing with the real issues. I find it appalling that ABC would have the audacity to ask Obama a question from Sean Hannity (Fox News) and a right-wing radio host. Shame on ABC News for following in the footsteps of FAX News. Shame, shame, shame!!

Posted by: Sarah | Apr 16, 2008 11:14:28 PM

ABC--The debate was shameful & a disgrace to the American people. There was no substance--no substance! Whoever planned this should be barred from Television forever! What does a flag pin have to do with the issues? Why bring up Rev Wright? The American people (voters) don't care about Rev Wright! We care about the issues! What about the economy, Heathcare, High gas prices, the War in Iraq! Is Barack Obama responsible for every crook that ever walked this earth! This was a joke! You insult us! Shame on you for tricking the American people into thinking there was going to be a debate on the issues that people are concerned about! Simply pathetic!

Posted by: julie | Apr 17, 2008 12:36:10 AM

I thought ABC News was into "NEWS" not Tabloid Garp. I was wrong! We had 50 min of garp then finally some things that mattered in the election. I don't watch station that present TABLOID News. I just moved ABC into that category.

Posted by: Ron Manbeck | Apr 17, 2008 12:43:56 PM

That debate was a disgrace. In the last week, the President of the United States acknowledged approving torture of prisoners in American custody and two women who were brutally gang-raped by employees of the Vice President's company testified before Congress. Yet you spent AN HOUR poking at misstatements and managed to ignore both of these historic issues? What planet do you live on? In what universe is a slip of the tongue more important to the nation than finding a President capable of undoing the breathtaking amount of damage this administration has done to America's soul?

As a caucasian man, I am both disgusted and offended by the "journalists" obviously jaded line of questioning at yesterday's debate. Because of their actions, my nightly news will henceforth be coming from Katie Couric at CBS, and my Sunday mornings will be spent with Tim Russert at NBC.

Posted by: Michael | Apr 17, 2008 10:39:39 PM

I'm glad Charlie and George had the back bone to ask the questions they did and I think it told alot of about them -I would also like to ask if Obama will say the Pledge. I do not think he likes America or is Proud of USA. Hillary did expose her dishonest self. I liked the debate and they did ask important questions. The Dem. just didn't like the questions or answers.

Posted by: ashurst | Apr 18, 2008 9:15:39 AM

Charlie and George were awful. They asked questions more National Enquirer would ask. I will be switching back from ABC to NBC. That was definitely not journalism. Questions regarding what is facing this country is important to me. Obama is right about being bitter, I am very bitter at this point.

I was watching the news with Charle
Gibson and all he could do is brag
Obama up about indorsments he got. He
ignored clinton. Whats wrong with him.
I use to like him until he turned
predgdiced. After the debate I give up.
Abc is mostly at fault for letting it
happen. There are other stations.

I thought the April 16 Debate was excellent. It is about time reporters began to ask probing questions of Barak Obama. Hillary Clinton: we know all about her. But Obama, we don't. Now we are learning: that he resents questions regarding his character, judgment and belief system. They asked about his 20 year relationship with Rev. Wright and with bomber William Ayers. He whined and his surrogates whined. He is evasive about raising taxes. He says he will not raise taxes on middle class but when questioned said he would raise capital gains taxes to 28% THAT is a middle class tax raise. That would decimate retirement for millions of people who don't have pensions to rely on, people who invested for years. QUESTION: Why would he want to raise capital gains when doing so insures that revenue would drop? There is data to prove this if anyone cared to check it out. So why would he do this? Because he is a garden variety populist politician. Obama's Change: from the 21st century back to the 19th.

I was appalled at the tabloid type questions asked by George S. and Charles Gibson. Their bias was obvious. It is not surprising coming from George S. - with his history with the Clintons, but a real surprise coming from Charles Gibson. I have had a great deal of respect for him in the past, but that is no longer true. This country needs change badly after the terrible administration of George Bush and the damage he has done. We need to hear the candidates address the problems we have as a nation, and their proposed solutions. Anything else is just politics as usual, and we have had enough of that.
