McCain Cites Gibson Interview for Campaign Theme

ABC News’ Bret Hovell reports: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., unveiled the makings of a new campaign slogan Thursday, saying in Florida that “reform, prosperity and peace” would be the issues on which the presidential campaign hinged.

And he previewed the new line earlier in the day in an interview with ABC News’ Charlie Gibson.

“I was interviewed this morning for about a half an hour by Charlie Gibson,” McCain told a crowd of newspaper editors in Orlando this afternoon. “And near the end of our conversation, he said, ‘What are the three major, three major issues confronting America in this campaign?’ And without thinking long, obviously, I said three things: reform, prosperity and peace.”

McCain went on to deliver what was basically his stump speech at the Orlando town hall: talking about cleaning up Washington (reform); fixing and growing the economy, and becoming energy independent (prosperity); and how to succeed in the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq (peace). But it was the first time he had a pithy and accessible sub-head for each of the topics he discussed.

McCain’s new message comes the same week that he officially learned the identity of his Democratic rival when Barack Obama clinched his party’s nod Tuesday night. McCain’s spur of the moment response to Gibson could end up becoming his rallying cry in the general election battle.
