Speech Or Spectacle? Obama Tonight
August 28, 2008 12:59 PM
ABC's Kate Snow is now at Invesco field:
At 10:30am Denver time -- a good 10 hours before hours before Obama takes the stage-- there were already ambitious vendors out on the side streets around the stadium selling Obama t-shirts, hats and other paraphernalia. Kinda like a rock concert. Or the Superbowl. There's a smell in the air that I've only smelled in the desert west-- a crisp smoky smell, like a combination of sage and ranch dirt. The sky is crystal blue. The Obama campaign couldn't ask for a better day.
It's almost as if you can feel the anticipation, the buildup, the expectations. We just talked to a group of college kids who road tripped here from Las Vegas. They told me they want to hear Obama talk about ending the war, about helping people pay for college, about health care for all. But they also came to see a show. This -- they said -- is a way for Obama to reach the masses, to introduce himself to the world. Maybe. Or maybe it's more like the Superbowl. Where some of the fans in the stands always go home disappointed. We'll see.

Not sure the fans will be disappointed with the free circus that has come to Denver. Real question is how will the American voters see the ego trip for BHO?

The first election I voted in was for Jimmy Carter. I listened to promises of "hope" and "change".
His "hope" and "change" was a disaster.
I have learned -- and I won't be fooled again by empty words.

Kate,
Enough with comparisons. This is the kind of politics that a world power needs. The flex of world political muscle to get the corruption out that has been allowed to flourish in Washington. To get the sleeping giant awakened. To move in leaps and bounds where before our political might only crawled.
This will be a movement like never seen before. If only our founding fathers . . . . .

How can anyone believe what is being said? Hillary, Joe Biden and others have said quite clearly that they think Obama is not ready to be President of the US---and, now they support. There is no more truth, no more mean what you say and say what you mean. It is so sad for America.

Obama is going to knock it out of the park as usual. I can't believe that the GOP thinks it's bad to have a popular president of course after the last canidate they produced it not like he's a hard act to follow. NO wonder our allies are starting to hate us. Worse yet I can't belive some of these people are buying these GOP slanders and lies and missrepresentations. of course thats why the GOP doesn't want to fund education because they would never win an election again!

If Obama has such a wonderful message why does he need such an elaborate stage to present it? Why not just go out and give the message? I personally would appreciate it more...I don't need all the pomp of Hollywood. Just give me the plain facts. Tell me Senator, what do you have to offer without putting your opponent down or telling me what your opponent would say or do, I want to hear what YOU are going to do.

I'm looking forward to watching Obama's acceptance speech--and to his presidency. It is time we had a president we can not only admire, but also like ... a president who will reposition the U.S. as the beacon of hope, democracy, and justice in the World.

I've been reading the blogs for sometime now. The GOP cracks me up making fun of Obama and the crowds that come out to hear him. It's pathetic and does nothing but make McCain's campaign look like whiney, tired little kids.

my fellow poster debra last night brilliantly dubbed tonight's event as 'THE CORONATION OF ZEUS...' i would add this event is stagecraft and nothing more just like the candidate. however i would LOVE to see obama wearing a toga. maybe obamagirl will make an appearance. i hear the anthem will be sung by an american idol star, how fitting. and perhaps michelle will fly in on a broom, take her meds, and not go bipolar tonight. entertainment at its finest bought and paid for by corporate/lobbyist america.

Have we been so dumbed down and fooled during the Bush years that anyone that cares about language, intellect and reaching the masses is to be despised?
Men and women are in their graves because a down-to-earth everybody wanted to have a beer with lied and manipulated Americans into a decision based on unfounded fear.
I remember when McCain won the primary a dog got more positive press now everyone even Romney is on his side. Who speaks of that? This is a good man and he is clean so people sit around and turn his positives into negatives. Some of it seems like pure envy. Be honest with yourselves and quit making up lame excuses that aren't true. Just say you don't want to vote for him. I see why we are in the boat we are in and sinking fast, narrow-mindedness and stupidity.

If McCan't could produce a crowd of more than 8, he wouldn't have to whine about Obama's popularity.
The beauty is that in a democracy, popularity will win the election, and tired crabby sore-loser-ism will lose.

I watch the Obama acceptance speech and kept getting flashbacks of "big brother" addressing the faithfull in the movie "1984". Obama has shown us he is a narcisitic illusion.

What amazes me is that there are very few people that knew Obama before he came on the national stage. During his college days, were his only friends misfits? Did he not socialize?
Is the Chicago machine the only interactiion that he had?
Does he want to keep his friends out of the limelight because the ones that we are aware of are flag stomping, terrorists and ranting, unchristian ministers?
Before he taxes us to death, I want to hear how he is sharing his personal wealth with the less fortunate? I want to know how he justifies same sex marriage and children raised in a two female household with his search and need for his father? How does he justify not offering medical aid to a live child from a botched abortion? I want to know, if he doesn't have a problem with the genocide of abortion, why he feels there is a need to reduce the number of abortions?
I don't want to hear CHANGE, I want to know what his plans and values are and I want to know how he plans to pay for all of the give aways that he's promising. Last time I heard, the money that government spends is supplied by the working citizens. Did he need to enlarge the yard of his one home (that we are aware of) so that he could plant a money tree orchard?

You saw one of his best friends--Rev. Wright. Another one of his buddies is Rezko, who's a Syrian crook. And there's always his buddy, Bill Ayers, who bombed the Pentagon and founded Weather Underground.

Same political speech, different political players. The Pepsi center was't good enough for him,(apparently nothing is good enough for him) couldn't get all his "followers" in there.
