Did McCain Make the RIGHT Pick?

August 30, 2008 1:01 PM

If there is criticism from the right or left it has so far been muted.  Yesterday (besides a critical statement from Obama's campaign early in the day) was mostly a day of introduction to Sarah Palin and congratulations.  The outspoken right, from Rush Limbaugh to Sean Hannity to some in the Evangelical community are voicing early support for the choice.  She is being framed as an out-of-Washington reformer with a familiar personal story and strong convictions.  The base seems happy.  But is she ready to serve as Vice President?

The national tracking polls have Obama up by an average of 6%. Gallup has him up 8% while Rasmussen Reports has him up 4%.

YES OH YES. THANKS MCCAIN. YOU ROCK.

McCain's pick of Sarah Palin makes a mockery of the office of the Vice President. She is the least qualified major party VP candidate in American history. She admitted last year that she's never really thought much about Iraq or the war because she's too busy doing other things. And she's wants to be a heartbeat away? She thinks she is going to deal with the leaders of Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, and North Korea? This is an absolute joke. McCain made a ridiculous, ridiculous choice.

I'd say between the similarites of McCain/Biden and Obama/Palin they all cancel each other out. I'll take Plain and ANY of the other canidates running for the Presidency. With Obama, McCain we'll still have WAR, debt, and further erosion of our wealth, quality of life and freedom fomr the tyranny of government.(I.e. use of force by barrell of a gun, taser, pepper spray, or "microwave cannon" to punish those who exercise their RIGHT to petition their government or DARE to voice their opposition to it.

She makes McCain look even more older.
Age issue was slowly fading, but with this choice, it has struck again in peoples mind!

Bottom line: She is not ready to step in and be president if something happens to the 72 year-old McCain. Great human interest story, good movie material, interesting symbolic gesture, LOUSY VP PICK!!

What happened to country first? Obviously this pick is to get votes, nothing more. Do we want Palin to be a heart beat away from the Presidency? A 72 year old heart beat away? To qualify for VP you have to be Presidential material. Do we want Palin heading our national security? How can she possibly keep American safe? How can she possibly deal with N. Korea, Russia, Iran? How can she possibly manage the war in Iraq & Afghanistan? Cammander in Chief? Ready to lead? More bad McCain judgment undermining his message. Wake up America!!

Most people don't really appreciate that the people of Alaska don't pay state taxes - they get checks from the state government based on the state's oil revenues. Ms. Palin is a popular governor because she renegotiated a deal with the oil companies and thus captured more oil money for the residents of Alaska. This state-wide socialism is taken for granted up in Alaska, so apparently no one has the slightest difficulty pronouncing Ms. Palin a die hard conservative. If I were an executive with a drug company the thought of Ms. Palin in the White House would terrify me. How long would the provision in Bush's drug policy that prevents the government from negotiating better prices on prescription drugs for Medicare patients survive? McCain apparently wants to distance himself from the corporate leeches who have fed so well in recent times at the Republican trough. Those guys would have loved Romney, but I expect them to hate Palin. It will be interesting to see what they do after having been thrown under the bus.

She is under investigation for abuse of power and ethics. She has ZERO foreign policy experience in these troubled timed. Less than 2 years ago she was mayor of a viliage of 8,000 that she left 20 million dollars in debt. This was a desperate choice. She is unfit to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

I think Palin is more ready to be vice president than Obama is ready to be president. By the way Mr. Coffee - your polls reflect the convention and doesnt yet reflect the republican convention or the VP pick. The little lead Obama has will soon disappear.

What, was Kelly Ripa not available? This is a joke.

No. I wonder if the luster will not be tainted before the convention.

The October surprise. Trooper gate?

Somehow the election has shifted its focus to Senator McCain’s impetuous decision to pick Governor Palin of Alaska as his running mate, rather than stay on course, in which I see being the main issues, our sagging economy and questionable foreign policy.
However, I will say this, Ms. Palin’s decision to accept the nomination for Vice President, without a doubt, creates serious concerns to serve in this capacity. As a parent myself, balancing equal time between work and family can be challenging. Governor Palin has small children, including a baby with Down syndrome, something that strikes a sensitive cord, since my first born succumb to an illness much similar to this one. Had my 4-day old daughter lived, it would have required much of my time in attending to her special needs and treatment throughout her lifetime.
The Vice President position comes with a great deal of responsibility, equally important as the job of President. A PART-TIME VICE PRESIDENT IS UNACCEPTABLE. Either Governor Palin will end up lacking in her obligations to fulfill motherhood duties, or struggle in effort to carry out that which is expected of her as V.P. This is not a small state like Alaska. It’s the United States of America that cannot accept anything less than to have someone WE TRUST to hold office.

michaelinphilly - Is that all you can come up with? She's under investigation because her brother in law got fired? Who cares. Do you know who else has ZERO foreign policy? The top of the dem's ticket. Face it, there's a new face in town and Obama is going down!

As far as I'm concerned, this pick was brilliant. I am sick and tired of the endless Washington-as-usual, mostly corrupt, politicans we have been stuck with. Palin has a backbone, she's not afraid to do what she thinks is right and is a leader, not a follow-what-Washington-dictates kind of person.

McCain saw Obama's speech at a football stadium and realized that Obama was scoring with the public. So, McCain threw a "hail Mary" pass.

Choosing a young, inexperienced female is clearing an act of desperation.

O no! McCain shooda picked Mitt Romney! But, I guess he's falling for all the "mainstream-Liberal-24/7 Lame News cycle-attention getting media" and the people who it attracts. This world is really getting weaker INTELLECTUALLY. Obama has LESS experience running for president as Palin has MORE for being a vice-presidential candidate.People are too quick to "jump on the political correctness band wagon" just to look "good" in front of the cameras.
I hope I'm wrong.

hopesprings52 - She may not be quite ready to step in if something happened to the 72 year old, but Obama isnt ready from day one. By the way, that 72 year old's mother is still alive, so I guess the genes live long in that family.

I think there's lots of ammunition there for Democrats. Already there's a potentially damaging audio recording that's surfaced of her laughing as an Alaskan radio DJ makes inflammatory and crude comments about a political rival. And then there's the "Troopergate" issue. Of course, if those are raised, they would be largely personal attacks - and Obama just vowed to steer clear of such things. And she's certainly a likable figure at the podium.

On the policy side, she's stated publicly that she isn't familiar with a number of foreign policy issues, which could make her vulnerable. On the other hand, Obama's made energy a centerpiece of his platform, and she certainly seems to have a handle on those issues. She's pro-drilling, but has taken on oil companies in Alaska for not sharing their profits equitably. That should go over well with voters who are ticked at big oil, but not convinced that we need an energy overhaul.

It won't go over well with people who want to scrap dependence on fossil fuels and/or make us energy independent. Despite her pro-oil development stance, there's not enough domestic oil in the U.S. to make us energy independent.
