George Stephanopoulos: What Hillary Needs to Do Tonight

August 26, 2008 5:53 PM

Abc_george_080826_blog George Stephanopoulos from Denver:

Sore losers cripple presidential nominees. Think of what Ronald Reagan did to Gerald Ford in 1976. After Ford crushed Reagan's late challenge and refused to offer him the VP slot, he had to beg Reagan to speak at the convention. The 798 words he got were no help. Barely a mention of Ford, not a word of praise. While Reagan's ringing defense of the GOP platform laid the groundwork for his 1980 campaign, it did nothing for Ford, who barely lost to Jimmy Carter come November.

Or recall Ted Kennedy in 1980. His famous "dream shall never die" speech, reprised so movingly last night, was unapologetically NOT about Jimmy Carter. Telling the crowd he was there to "affirm a cause," Kennedy attacked the Republicans and praised past Democratic presidents but refused to make and affirmative argument for Carter.

We know how that turned out too.

Which brings us to Hillary Clinton's challenge tonight. She doesn't want to be blamed for an Obama loss. And if she doesn't convince her voters that she really, really wants Obama to win, he just might lose. Look at the numbers. Right now only 70 percent of Hillary Clinton voters say they support Obama. Dig a little deeper, and you see that even that number is soft. Fewer than half of those voters -- 43 percent -- say they'll definitely support Obama. They still might stay home, throw their vote to Nader or Barr, or go for McCain. That's on top of the 30 percent of Hillary voters who say they won't vote for Obama.

Without those voters Obama can't win. He needs them to come around. All signs are that Hillary will do what Obama needs her to do tonight. Then it will be his turn to do the courting.  If he wants to win, he shouldn't be shy about it.  Maybe even satellite into the convention again?

If Obama wanted Clinton's voters he should have put her on the ticket! Bad on Obama for not doing so and when he loses it will be his own fault.

It was reported today that Obama stated that the United States has not also set the best example to Russia with regards to invading countries. The obvious reference is to Iraq and John McCain retorted that our invasion of Iraq was proper and justified and can not be compared to the invasion of Georgia by Russia.

Here is a thought for the Democrat leadership on their position of no American support for Iraq.
Obama discussed and downplayed his recent harrowing experience with their chartered campaign aircraft that had elevator problems due to an accidental inflation of a rear exit slide. The media reported it was a serious event. United States military pilots experience harrowing events every day.

Thanks to the recommended McCain troop surge and George Bush original decision to overthrow Sadaam Hussein, US Airforce and Navy pilots no longer have to provide a continuous no fly zone over Iraq. They had provided this no fly zone to prevent Sadaam Hussein from using his airforce and helicopters to slaughter helpless Kurds in the North of Iraq. Before the United States invasion under George Bush, this nofly zone had to be carried out from carriers and bases in Kuwait which involved distances and hazards. The successful overthrow of Sadaam has saved countless American pilot lives and harrowing military aircraft safety incidents similar to what occurred on the Obama chartered campaign plane.

Democrats under the leadership of Obama would have us performing a no fly zone mission over Iraq for the next fifty years instead of going in and taking out Sadaam as we did and saving countless US military pilots lives over the next fifty years. McCain support of the war in Iraq was the right thing to do and will have the long term effect of saving American lives.

Gloria.....I too am contemplating voting Independent. My personal opinion either someone paid Obama swell to throw it for Hillary.....or either SOMEONE PAID OBAMA SWELL TO GIVE THE ELECTION TO MCCAIN ... If that be the case then Obama's the winner all the way around...he can jump back on his boogie board and fade into the dust from which he came..... a very rich man!

"Danny"--you are TOTALLY correct. Hillary was TOTALLY qualified for VP--and MORE qualified for President. Obama not only showed his lack of "unifying" due to pride, he rejected a huge, huge block of voters and, more importantly, TOTALLY ran counter to the MANTRA of his "handlers: "Change You Can Believe In." His managers recently changed this line (which sounded too evangelical)to "Change That Works For You." Gee, you Obama fanatics out there, he had a GOLDEN opportunity to demonstrate before being elected that he was capable of both UNIFYING and of implementing an extraordinary change--placing the FIRST super-competent woman into the VP slot. MAY the Democrats lose yet another one with their twisted manipulation of loser candidates behind the scenes. People now will be leaving the Democratic Party in droves. Good for them for their intelligence. Imagine telling the public that "experience" really doesn't matter--they bet on the wrong horse, banking on a longing for "change," and its color was irrelevant. It was its lack of substance and depth.

>Danny wrote: Tell me this America, if Obama is going to be the "Big Uniter", then why couldn't he demonstrate that by putting his differences with Hillary Clinton aside, and including her on the ticket. Now, that would have been ENORMOUSLY convincing in showing America that he can bring people together!! Obama failed his first big "unity" test.

If Hillary had won the nomination...I would have voted for MCcain.I do not want another"CLINTON" in the White House ever again.

She and her diehard girls accept the fact that they lost.
Is Obama ready or not that another story.
Some people here need to change their eyes and have the courage to see beyong the man skin. Come on this guy is Harvard graduate. Harvard one of the pride of this nation. No stupid can graduate from harvard is case you dont know.

My frustration with the Democratic Party is multi-faceted. I supported Senator Clinton for her position on the issues. If she had been chosen for the VP spot, I might have voted for the Democratic Party. Perhaps her influence would have kept Democratic party officials from compromising on the environment, wiretapping, health care, and a multitude of other important challenges facing the global community.

At this point, I am no longer a Democratic. My party is Green because the future of this planet requires us to enter a new era of thinking and acting. Paraphrasing Al Gore in his film, "An Inconvenient Truth," it is a moral imperative.

I find it amazing that people believe she should have been on the ticket. Nothing would have galvanized the Republicans like prospect of, not only Hillary, but Bill back in the White House. I am a Centrist (read: where the battle will be won or lost in November)-- Right now I am leaning toward Obama. Had Hillary been on the ticket there is no way in hell I would have vote Democrat. I would wager that history will portray the Clintons as a couple of political Rasputins that did anything and everything to achieve power ... with a constituency stupid enough to support them.

Whoa! This is not about Hillary vs ObamavsMcCain. It's about
dis-integration. It's about extremists/militants who have taken over America: women, blacks, gays, pro-abortionists/anti-abortionists, Latinos, anti-smoking, pro-pot, neo-cons, religious extremists, ad nauseum. To get your minority a majority voice you scream, shout, kick to win, whine, balk, pout, bitch if you don't. We've become a nation of babies, spoiled children. "I'll take my marbles and go home." Most of the world game is won by grown ups. We'd better get with it ladies.

Posted by: siler | Aug 26, 2008 7:36:38 PM

It's not about Hillary. Hillary is just one of multiple outward symptoms. It's about the way the democratic party is treating women. It's about the way the democratic party is turning it's back on it's base. It's about watching our senators and representatives keep selling us out and signing bills to spy on us, bills to take away any right that doesn't have a gun or bible attached to it, it's about destroying separation of church and state, and much more.

Sorry George what Hillary needs to really do is anoint John McCain so she can be his VP, Obama got most of the republican party on his side now from the Bush administration so there will not be change if she does what they did, so now it's time for real unity Hillary needs to cross over just as the republicans did for Obama. Hillary need to change for real unity since Obama's did not go with unity. Unity unity unity

Posted by: GJ | Aug 26, 2008 7:38:41 PM

Obama is far from unity only when he repeats what others tell him to say, Hillary got the anointing of 18 million sorry she is a real winner

Posted by: GG | Aug 26, 2008 7:40:36 PM

Why blame her if Obama lost.
Now,,they need her to support him.
I wonder if his backers including Pelosi, Dean,Reed etc acknowlegde this,,
For sure they do!

Hillary cannot make up for, and in fact, contributed TO the TRILOGY OF OBAMA:
INEXPERIENCE, (NO)JUDGMENT, SOCIALIST. It looks like Voight got it right, and did it in basically 3 words. A lot more concise than just an EMPTY SUIT. Voters have a right (pun intended) to know what is actually MISSING in that EMPTY SUIT. I hope voters are as perceptive and concise as Voight in consideration of this candidate for President of our republic. Obama is ill-prepared to ever be Commander-in-Chief. Like Obama said, we need to learn a second language. If Obama gets in, I would suggest Russian or Chinese. OH! That's right, Obama and Clinton both voted AGAINST English as the national language, but I think voters will get the idea.

Posted by: Mr_Conservative | Aug 26, 2008 7:42:17 PM

The DNC is shameless!

Posted by: catleya | Aug 26, 2008 7:43:31 PM

Yeah it's sad men don't can't face the truth seeing a women be in, just as they wiped out 5 million in the church I heard the same.

Posted by: GG | Aug 26, 2008 7:44:06 PM

Obama did not want Hillary for VP so she does not need to do anything tonight but say good-bye to her supporters. We love you Hillary and will not let you down....Vote McCain.

Posted by: Sally298 | Aug 26, 2008 7:46:16 PM

marat: I TOTALLY agree with your comment about how Obama's failed first term would make it much more difficult for highly qualified African-Americans to get elected to national office. As an African-American man, I find his arrogance to be a bit much. What he needs to do is go back to the Senate where he belongs, put in a few years and then try again. He needs to get some accomplishments under his belt, then he can expect people to believe in him. Too bad that a lot of young white people brought into that white guilt that seems to be flowing around the country these days, and that the African-American community is so desperate for a new leader that they would almost vote for this charlatan in great numbers. It would be a SAD day in America if he actually won.

I do not want another "CLINTON" in the White House.
