McCain Aide Mocks Obama's Columned Stage

August 26, 2008 7:10 PM

ABC News' David Chalian and Teddy Davis report:

When Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., moves the Democratic National Convention from the Pepsi Center to Invesco Field in Denver on Thursday, the freshman senator is planning to speak from a columned stage resembling an ancient Greek temple.

"Is this from the Onion?" quipped a McCain adviser.

The reference to the satirical newspaper came after Reuters reported that Obama is planning an elaborate rock concert setup complete with post-speech fireworks.

The national anthem will even have a touch of celebrity: Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar-winning actress and former "American Idol" castoff, will perform the honors at the onset of the evening.

Starting with a July ad which included footage of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, the McCain campaign has been airing a series of television ads which paint Obama as a celebrity lacking in substance.

The celebrity-like trappings of Obama's Thursday's speech may have given the Republicans new ammo.

Oh, just more grandstanding from this pathetic wannabe pop star. Too bad the Democrats couldn't have got behind a politician that actually wanted to get elected so she could help the people in this country. Instead all they have is someone interested in his own celebrity. Someone could offer him a movie or tv deal tomorrow and he's forget all about being President.

Is he competing on American Idol or for the presidency of the United States of America. What an arrogant, pompous a$$. Spending all that money and no one is even going to be watching.

Hi Kay,

I assure you that millions and millions of Americans will be watching.

Sorry to disappoint.

Perhaps the McCain campaign is jealous because they couldn't begin to pull off something like that.

Just hand us republicans more material for more "One" ads...has he got anything to show? What was his record as a senator? Huh?

Obama maybe in 10 years not, but not this year no way! An empty suit with no experience.

You would think with all the high powered Hollywood help, Staging the children in the act and then the Kennedy, they could do better. This is Entertainment Tonight, not someone who can be president. We did find out who is paying for this run to be President. Kennedy, Kerry, Biden and the whole east coast political mafia. Why else Biden as VP.

McCain you are old enough to remember what it was like to be in a Greek temple.

Go to sleep old man, the future does not include you!

Great moment for a great country USA, and a great moment for our next President Obama.

What a DORK!

Obama can speak from Mount Olympus for all I care.

Any Jew who votes for Obama is crazy!

He is surrounded by Jew hating rats.

I really cannot tell what Oboma is running for. He is running to be President of the world, he is running to be the messiah or does he turly believe he is the one and only ture God. I think it must be the later. Maybe ones should look at the scriptures as he may just be the fortold anti-christ. At the most he thinks he is some kind of immortal God. That is all we need.

Sounds like the opening of a Madonna concert. I can't wait for this guy to lose, thanks in big part to his arrogance.

If you are not outraged you are not paying attention. Research Barack and His Hate Filled Black Liberation Theology. NO WE CAN'T!!!!!

Posted by: Alex | Aug 26, 2008 7:38:35 PM

I understand why the GOP mocks the set-up...Ancient Greece is the birthplace of democracy.

Posted by: Ron | Aug 26, 2008 7:38:41 PM

Hi Kay - actually millions will be watching. Maybe you should too - you might learn something.

And I'd suggest that everyone else quit speculating and see what materialized.

Odds are that the 28 percenters won't like anything - but the rest of us will be just fine with the setup.
