No Kindergartner Left Behind. Kids Grab Your Number 2 Pencils!

August 27, 2008 10:53 AM

Nm_kindergarten_080827_blog The New York Times is reporting this morning that New York City is asking public elementary school principles to consider opting into a pilot program that will administer standardized tests to children in kindergarten through 2nd grade. The federal law "No Child Left Behind" requires children beginning in 3rd grade to test and New York City has been a big proponent of using tests to evaluate the progress of students, teachers and schools.  Some educators are reportedly voicing some big concerns.  The counter argument -- teachers are spending too much time already teaching to tests and children that young should be focused on sharing and creativity.

Every teacher I have met dislikes No Child Left Behind. It makes me think that it probably isn't the greatest idea.

The "No Child Left Behind," program isn't designed to educate our children better. It's designed to make the standard so high, that teachers and students can't achieve it. Then the ultimate purpose is clear. George Bush doesn't have to fund it. He can spend more of our money, elsewhere!

My kids are about to matriculate into the NYC public school system. Not happy about this.
