Fact Check: Palin Wrong on Former VP Credentials
September 11, 2008 5:04 PM
ABC News' Lisa Chinn reports: During her interview with ABC News' Charlie Gibson Thursday Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin attempted to deflect a question about the fact she has never met a foreign head of state by saying that "many" other vice presidential nominees in history hadn't met a head of state either.
However Palin was mistaken, at least where recent history is concerned.
Every vice president over the last 30 years had met a foreign head of state before being elected.
"Have you ever met a foreign head of state?" Gibson asked Palin Thursday.
"I have not," Palin said, "and I think if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you."
However Palin, who obtained her first passport two years ago, would in fact be the first vice president in 32 years who hadn't met a foreign head of state, if she were elected.
The current Vice President Dick Cheney is a former Secretary of Defense and met foreign leaders in that capacity.
Former Vice President Al Gore was a member of the Senate Armed Forces Committee and went on many congressional trips abroad, known as CODELS, where he met foreign leaders.
Former Vice President Dan Quayle was also a member the Senate Armed Committee and went on many CODELS.
Former President George H.W. Bush was the Ambassador to China before he became a vice president and eventually president.
Walter Mondale, who became vice president in 1977 under President Jimmy Carter, was a senator for 16 years before becoming VP and met foreign leaders

I'm afraid Palin is wrong on a LOT of things. Provided that she ever heard about them.
The Gibson interview made abundantly clear that Palin is only in it for her sex. The Palin pick is cynical politics. Now she's a disgrace to all the great female polticians and leaders out there.
She fell very deep tonight, after succesfully reading aloud the convention speech a Bush aide had written for her.

What's new. Palin's wrong on EVERYTHING. No wonder the campiagn left her hidden.

Lisa Chinn is making a big deal regarding meeting a head of state. I don't think that every VP met a head of state. They can do that later. What is Chinn's problem and who cares about the head of state. The important issue is winning the election and at the rate she is going with the public McCain might just win.

I can name tons of former vp in our country's 236year history that have not met a foreign head of state.
This question was intended to be a negative attack on Palin kind of like PUSH POLLING.
Gibson was very condescending in tone & body language to her. It was not really an interview, more an attempt by the liberal media to try to stumble her.
SHE DID A GREAT JOB BY NOT TAKING THE BAIT.

How did you prove Palin wrong on this fact?
>if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you.
She states that many VPs in history MAY have the same answer. So ABC checks with the last 5 VPs and because they did meet other heads of state all the other VPs must not have?
Clearly this is a hit piece.

This lady is wrong on many things especially policy issues, she has none just like her partner. Bridge to nowhere because she stopped construction. Lies to get someone fired nice girl isn't she? 6 colleges in 4 years and an ex beauty queen just wonder what qualifies her since that is their chief complaint about Obama looks like neither one are either.

World: Let me go on record that Obama read one of JFK's speeches on the night of his acceptance speech and he has been using speeches from the RFK book. He might have added a few words of his own but all his speeches are copies of other's and that was already stated.

Cable news commentators are saying she did very well despite attempts by Mr. Gibson to try to set trap doors for her. They said she was smart enough to not take the bait.

Who’s Your Messiah Now?
Sarah Palin’s rapid elevation from small town mayor to candidate for national office to revered deity, has got me asking if conservatives aren’t taking a bit too much of the savior in mass (or smoking crack). The hyperbole exceeds satire.
She is the true Paris Hilton of politicians. She’s famous for being famous. Especially among conservatives. But the inside-the-beltway hysteria of GOP coastal elites and wealthy Christian Conservatives - as expressed by the staffs of the Weekly Standard, National Review, and Fox News (in New York!), among others - is a soirée in a samovar.
Outside of their gay and prosperous precincts, Americans are still wondering who the hell this woman is. The GOP is gravely misreading the national mood and the general appeal of their VP candidate. No one who wasn’t already going to vote for her will now do so because she eats mooseburger and gives a snarky speech. Better enjoy that celebration because prognostications aside - she’s the 2012 nominee (they assume either a loss or McCain’s death, whichever comes first), she’s the future of the party, she’s come to save us from imminent defeat - Sarah Palin has a long, tough, and I’m guessing, scandal-filled road ahead of her.
Who’s your messiah now? Sarah Palin. And you better pray she’s studying hard and paying off the townies back home, or she just might be a false prophet.

Keep going ABC.....you only went far back to George Bush #41.....keep going back. Sarah Palin is not wrong.

Rose: I didn't know that you were a master on politics. Maybe McCain should have chosen you.

Obama is the one that is an embarrassment to the US. Won't even show a birth certificate or college records. The Democrats are just afraid of Palin because she is honest and one of us!! I am voting Republican all the way down the line. First time in 37 years!!!

CHARLES GIBSON WAS VERY CONDESCENDING & DISRESPECTFUL TONIGHT TO SARAH.
RESPECT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR BETW. A REPORTER & SUBJECT.
GIBSON NEEDS TO GO BACK TO COLLEGE & TAKE A REFRESHER ON JOURNALISM 101

How is Palin wrong? Did she say if you go back 30 years you will see that other VPs didn't meet foreign heads of state? No she said if you look back in history. So to say she is wrong is just inaccurate and a lie.

I am not quite sure why she needs a ton of experience. Won't she be obtaining that experience as Vice-President?
Of the candidates, the person I am not quite sure about as far as experience is Obama. How man heads of state has he been able to meet before he began running for president? If he states that his "executive experience" is running a campaign, then can't Sarah Palin be expected to gain the same types of experience on the campaign trail?
One other comment from someone who isn't writing on these posts daily but do read them... I think these posts are for intelligent and thoughtful discussion and not for people to push their narrow-minded views of each candidate. I can't believe WORLD would post something like "she's only in it for her sex." Do you know how pathetic you sound? Go look in the mirror and look at what you have become.

Why would anyone expect her to know that vice-presidential nominees in recent decades had met heads of state? She didn't even know what the Bush doctrine was.
Maybe she assumed that other vice-presidential nominees were as unqualified as she is.

How much more dumbing down can this country take? Palin is in way over her head. McCain has totally jumped the shark.
And Putin is laughing his a** off.

Ann FL: You are absolutely right and I am surprised at Charles Gibson for doing that. But Palin isn't a dumb woman and will answer back. I cannot wait until she debates Biden. Obama lost all his debates and the forum interview. She will do great and run all over Biden.
