Sarah Palin Meets World Leaders -- Reporters Kept Away?

September 23, 2008 11:19 AM

Abc_palin_080912_main_3 ABC's Kate Snow from New York:

There's a battle going on right now over how the networks will be allowed to cover Sarah Palin's big day of visits in NY with world leaders. Palin is scheduled to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai shortly, followed by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and then with McCain advisor, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. The networks had arranged for a "pool" camera- one camera to cover the meetings, whose video would be pooled or shared with all networks. Such arrangements are standard when dealing with intimate high-level meetings between leaders and candidates. But typically, along with cameras, there is an editorial presence-- at least one print reporter, one TV reporter and one radio reporter is standard. Today, the McCain campaign had said it would allow only one editorial person inside. Now, the campaign is saying it wants only the camera inside with no editorial presence. All of the networks are objecting. Stay tuned.

11:30 AM Update:  The networks have voted to BAN any use of the photographs/video in protest.

12 Noon:  Word has come in that a CNN producer WILL be allowed to accompany the camera at these meetings.  This issue appears to be resolved.

Wake up America... This is a marketing campaign, not an election process. Let's get some photos with Sarah acting international.

I wonder what Johnny boy is afraid of?

YOu know, you journalists (and I use that term loosely) are not the end all, be all. You maliciously attacked Sarah Palin for days after her nomination... spread vicious horrible rumours.. why should she give any of you the time of day? Just so you can twist and distort and attack? You guys have NO CREDIBILITY with the public anymore.

One would expect this from a Chinese or North Korean government or a dictatorship....secretive, paranoid, irrational. This is what we would have to look forward to.

I'm with the previous writer. The networks should respond by refusing to cover the story at all. Give them what they want - in spades.

What are they so afraid of? A light-weight among heavy hitters?

Why is it that that Democrats seem to be the most bitter and angry group in America. If you don't like Palin vote for Obama and watch SNL. I had given money to McCain but not my max since all of the personal attacks have happened I now have given the max. Be angry in silence because when you say it out loud the base will react

Hoist in their own petard! So no free photo ops from the networks because the Palin/McCain campaign doesn't want any reporters to witness how inexperienced Palin might sound speaking with these leaders. EXCELLENT!!

Sarah Palin wants to ban books in Alaska and now John McCain wants to block media coverage. This is the type of governemnt we need.

Posted by: RA | Sep 23, 2008 11:46:41 AM

The question is: when will the public be outraged at the lack of an independent press and fair press? The McCain campaign knows that the major media outlets are in the tank for Obama. The McCain campaign is not manipulating the press; the press is manipulating the public and they're doing it on behalf of the con artist from Hyde Park. When will the press give the same scrutiny to Obama's racist, antisemitic and terrorist cronies that it is now giving to truly minor and trivial matters that might have occurred in Alaska such as the nonsense over a dispute involving a library book.

Give me a break!

Oh, but she really is ready to lead! She said so herself on television! I agree.. the press should boycott this one simply on principle!

Palin is isolated from reporters what are they hiding?

Posted by: Lookup | Sep 23, 2008 11:47:18 AM

What's the difference. If the other reporters were in the room, they wouldn't be able to participate in the meeting anyway. They can do the same reporting from the camera feed and don't have to be in on the meeting. Besides, What does the McCain Campaign owe any of these Democratic Loving Media reporters. We need to bring back the law that requires EQUAL reporting for both major parties. You can see the media just can't be trusted.

Madeleine Albright is more pitbull than Palin.
Palin is a total moron, and it keeps showing more and more...

Posted by: matt | Sep 23, 2008 11:48:33 AM

I never seen anything like this before in my life....Not only is she not answering qustion here but in the debate next week, she and Biden aren't allowed to interact. This is insane.

Tell me again ....why is she the VP canidate?

Posted by: TW | Sep 23, 2008 11:48:55 AM

Trying to hide and run at the same time. They fear truth will come out. Just on these tactics alone, people should vote for Obama/Biden. Imagine what it will be like IF by chance they get elected.

Why would anyone want to do a press conference with all the lies and stories that have been printed about Governor Palin...I wouldn't.

Posted by: Polly | Sep 23, 2008 11:49:19 AM

Great Job ! Keep the Obama squad away. They are used to having it "their way" 24 -7 ! It's about time someone put the biased paparazzi in their place.

Posted by: disillusioned2008 | Sep 23, 2008 11:49:23 AM

Can anyone be surprised by this latest revelation? Of course reporters and cameras were banned. Otherwise, it would have recorded her being the most confused, out-of-touch, and ridiculous candidate in history. I can only imagine what the world leaders think! They probably thought she was the "entertainment" when she walked in the room!

Posted by: Sharon | Sep 23, 2008 11:49:26 AM

How much of Obama's discussions with world leaders during his trip to Germany, Iraq, France etc was on tape? ... only what he wanted to be ... so the McCain Campaign is doing nothing unusual. And with the trash that the Media is reporting; i.e. the incest skit on SNL, why is that on the news 3 days later? ... with this level of reporting, who would want the Media in the room?
