Schlafly Chides McCain Camp for Palin Cancellation

September 02, 2008 11:36 AM

ABC News' Teddy Davis reports: Conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly is taking the McCain campaign to task for notifying her at the last minute that Sarah Palin will be a no-show on Tuesday when the Republican National Coalition for Life holds an event honoring the Alaska governor.

"I think this is clearly somebody in the McCain campaign who doesn't understand where the votes are coming from," Schlafly told ABC News. "They only told me this at 10 o'clock last night, and it was a call from somebody down-the-line in the McCain campaign.

"The pro-lifers who paid $95 to come to this event because of Sarah Palin are going to be very unhappy," she added.

Schlafly is expecting 800 people, most of whom are delegates to the Republican National Convention, to attend Tuesday's reception at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in St. Paul, Minn. The event runs from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. CT.

The purpose of the event is to honor Palin for being a political figure who "not only talks the talk, but walks the walk" when it comes to putting "life first."

Debbie Joslin, a Republican National Committeewoman from Alaska, will accept the pro-life award on behalf of Palin.

Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella said McCain's running mate will not be attending the event because she is "preparing for her speech at the convention.

"Events that were set up before she was named McCain's running mate did not account for the fact that her schedule would be changing as a vice presidential nominee," said Comella.

The Republican National Coalition for Life event never appeared on Palin's vice presidential schedule.

Nevertheless, the McCain campaign did not notify Schlafly of the plan to back out of the event until Monday night, and Schlafly claims that the Secret Service scoped out the event site earlier in the day on Monday. The McCain campaign was not able to confirm Schlafly's claim about the Secret Service.

Schlafly, who gained her iconic status among conservatives by leading the fight against the Equal Rights Amendment, called the selection of Palin to be McCain's running mate "terribly smart."

"I cannot believe what she has done to energize the Republican Party and the people who were, at best, lukewarm about McCain," said Schlafly.

Schlafly noted how Monday's announcement that Palin's 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, is pregnant and planning to marry the father of her baby, did not alter the views of social conservatives about McCain's running mate.

"I don't think that has dampened enthusiasm in the slightest," said Schlafly.

Schlafly added that Tuesday's event would have been a good opportunity for Palin to quickly address her daughter's pregnancy and to eliminate further discussion of it.

"She was not going to be subjected to questions at this event," said Schlafly.

Asked what she plans to say about the cancellation at the event, Schlafly said, "I am certainly going to say that it was McCain that canceled."

Come on guys, let's go at it.

Should I start for the neo-libs? Okay...I'll start with another neo-lib's quote.

"Check out Bristol getting drunk. Guess that's ok for 17 year olds."

That ought to get things going.

Good Luck.

McCain doesn't get it. When you make a promise to people, you keep it. People were looking forward to meeting her and speaking with her. Is he afraid of what she might say? That's not being a Maverick.

McCain lacks judgement and did a poor job vetting Palin. Now the heat is on and he's trying to hide her.

News flash: Sara Palin SUPPORTED the "Bridge to Nowhere" and the Congressional earmark to pay for it.

As mayor of tiny Wasilla, Alaska she hired a Washington lobbyist to bring federal pork home to her town.

Oh, by the way, Alaska actually sends money (some people would call it a welfare check) to every citizen of Alaska! So balancing the budget did not exactly require expertese in management.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT SARA PALIN.

We have had two chances now to judge John McCain's judgement:

1. The war in Iraq that costs $10 BILLION A MONTH, without helping educate our children, fix our bridges, or make the change to an economy based on renewable energy.

2. Choosing someone to be one heartbeat away from being president, without any consideration whatsoever as to the welfare of the nation.

Gambler. Hot-head. Reckless John McCain.

It is about the gambler and hot-head -- the one who didn't send a team to Alaska to vet his VP until the day before his announcement -- the man who put HIS needs before that of the country, John McCain.

The only thing worse for McCain than having Palin on the ticket with him is having to withdraw her name from it. What does that say about his judgment when you have to walk back to the American people and say “I made a mistake about this woman”? McCain is making mistakes before his job has even started; and, this is a simple decision, who to run with? This proves that McCain has no passion and no judgment if he is only looking for a running mate to scrap him some votes. Political mavericks, strong leaders with good judgment, and Commanders in Chief don’t test the waters with political candidates they think can bring them votes and then pull them out once they see otherwise. There is no “do over” as President of the United States. Cleary, experience does not equal good judgment, or McCain would never have made such a terrible pick; similar to his terrible judgments on the economy and Iraq that he has been making in line with George W. Bush now for too long.

He was thinking with the wrong head when he picked this lady....

Palin, Hillary, Obama, nome of htem are really the issue. The real issue here for me is John McCain's decision making skills. I don't want someone in a position of power who's like me. I want the best, the brightest, the most squeeky clean person in the oval office or around the corner from it. Palin isn't a bad person, just a bad decision for VP. But it's McCain I won't vote for now.

I think you might be right Beck. Let's get him...or her...or wait...or her kids...aha...

From one of your fellow Comrades:

"Check out Bristol getting drunk. Guess that's ok for 17 year olds."

Grrr...

I have always been tired of the GOP using Religion and God to sway voters….it should simply be about the critical issues and the best leaders to build concensus and implement necessary change to help ALL Americans, not just the faithful. I thought it was hypocritical that Gov. Palin had her poor 17year old daughter holding the 4-month baby with a blanket covering her belly…if she was sooo proud, why were they hiding this? This is so obviously a tactic and it insults educated women like me who can see right thru this risky move. I wonder how the GOP and the media would react if it was a political family that happeed to be Hispanic or black? Would we see it as simply a “common mistake”?! or, would we call it another example of the lack of American values and a baby out of wedlock?!?

Clearly there is a double standard and hypocrisy…Again, it should be about the best candidates and focus on issues.

God bless ya, Phyllis, there has been very little time and Gov. Palin has a message to deliver Wednesday night!

Imagine McCain and this jerry springer clan running around the whitehouse doing crazy stuff to embarrass the country.

Why oh why cant we get a normal president to come in and set the ship on smooth sailing , we do in Barack its up to the country to deliver.

Ms Schlafy has a right to be angry. After all McCain has sold his soul to the conservative far right wing of the party when he dumped his own choice for VP either Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge and picked Sarah Palin as he was told to. McCain is no longer a marverick, he is a gelded old stallion that the right wing will use as it wishs for the next four years should he be elected.

It's clear that John McCain only selected Sarah Palin as his V.P. to get female (and conservative)voters - which he needed badly. It may be true that not all Hillary voters were going for Obama - but were they going to McCain?? Highly doubtful. I feel badly for Palin's problems this week. Nothing to gloat about, that's for sure. But McCain should have been more careful whom he selected and not pandered to the female and conservative voter. Now, I am sure he regrets his choice tremendously. Shows very poor judgment and planning on his part.

I'm sorry I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT STAND THESE SOCIAL CONSERVATIVES AT ALL WHATSOEVER!!!! I am a LIBERAL REPUBLICAN and these people in my party are what makes me SICK AND DISGUSTED with the Republican party. Just remember everyone we're NOT all like these people.
