The Palin Interview

September 11, 2008 5:07 PM

Abc_palin_080911_main Charlie Gibson has just finished his first interview with Sarah Palin. It's a global tour -- Iraq and Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Georgia and Russia, and America's place in the world. For all of you who were concerned -- Charlie asked plenty of follow-ups. There were also questions about her general qualifications to be Vice President. Or Commander-In-Chief. Here are a couple of excerpts. Much more on World News this evening.

GIBSON: Governor, let me start by asking you a question that I asked John McCain about you, and it is really the central question. Can you look the country in the eye and say "I have the experience and I have the ability to be not just vice president, but perhaps president of the United States of America?"

PALIN: I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we'll be ready. I'm ready.

GIBSON: And you didn't say to yourself, "Am I experienced enough? Am I ready? Do I know enough about international affairs? Do I -- will I feel comfortable enough on the national stage to do this?"

PALIN: I didn't hesitate, no.

GIBSON: Didn't that take some hubris?

PALIN: I -- I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate.

****************************

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God." Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don't know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln's words when he said -- first, he suggested never presume to know what God's will is, and I would never presume to know God's will or to speak God's words. But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that's a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God's side. That's what that comment was all about, Charlie.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln's words, but you went on and said, "There is a plan and it is God's plan."

PALIN: I believe that there is a plan for this world and that plan for this world is for good. I believe that there is great hope and great potential for every country to be able to live and be protected with inalienable rights that I believe are God-given, Charlie, and I believe that those are the rights to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That, in my world view, is a grand -- the grand plan.

GIBSON: But then are you sending your son on a task that is from God?

PALIN: I don't know if the task is from God, Charlie. What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision he has made, what he decided to do and serving for the right reasons and serving something greater than himself and not choosing a real easy path where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer.

From Rove's lips to Palin's mouth... no answers, no facts.

I was scared about Sarah Palin before, but now I'm terrified.

In that excerpt above, she used 346 words and said NOTHING, and answered NOTHING!

The Emperor has no clothes...

Gov Sarah Palin is really a concern, she is not doing well, she is not common, she is very rare. I am really scared off her answers to crucial issues facing America. She is a real mujahedeen who is out of control. America doesnot need more wars, but economical prosperity in a peaceful world. Please God save America from McPalin, warmongers and fearmongers.

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie,
I once respected you. You asked, you hound Obama with the tough questions. Why did you go light on Palin? Why? Why? Why? Her first interview is with you and you put on the kid gloves, put her over your shoulder and burp the pit bull. No wonder they selected you to be the first...Please regain your objectivity and quit thinking with your...Please! I used to think you were better than that!

Maybe she should have stopped and thought, "Gee, my daughter's unmarried and pregnant at 17. Maybe I should consider her feelings?"

Posted by: obamamama | Sep 11, 2008 5:30:00 PM

So neither John nor Palin thought about whether she was ready to be President? Good to know.

Posted by: Keith | Sep 11, 2008 5:30:12 PM

What he needed to ask was something along these lines: "You've travelled very little outside of the US, and you have never seriously studied history, geography, political science, economics, international relations, or anything else related to the foreign policy dimensions of the job of Vice President. So what exactly are your qualifications for this part of the job?"

Posted by: Jim | Sep 11, 2008 5:30:57 PM

She's nobodys fool. YOU GO GIRL!!!

Posted by: millertime | Sep 11, 2008 5:31:32 PM

Sarah Palin is someone who has my respect and i believe she and McCain will lead our country on the path that leads to prosperity and peace!

Posted by: amy | Sep 11, 2008 5:31:54 PM

Interesting... everyone is focusing on Palin's qualifications, not McCain's, yet Obama is the least experienced of all.. Very interesting

Posted by: Bill | Sep 11, 2008 5:32:26 PM

Wow, hard-hitting stuff.

Posted by: bartholi | Sep 11, 2008 5:32:45 PM

She's Rove's fool. She's Limbaugh's fool. She's Bush's fool. She's McCain's fool.

Posted by: obamamama | Sep 11, 2008 5:33:07 PM

Go Sarah and McCain!

Posted by: 30yrdem-not any more | Sep 11, 2008 5:33:31 PM

No Bill - Obama is somebody who has put in the time, studied, and obviously knows a great deal about foreign policy. Palin is obviously someone who knows nothing about it. That's the difference.

Posted by: Jim | Sep 11, 2008 5:33:34 PM

Reading those excerpts, i didn't learn anything about her policy positions. What does this woman actually stand for?

Posted by: doug | Sep 11, 2008 5:33:54 PM

And exactly when has Obama been asked a tough question other then on O'Reilly?

I'd heard this place was ultra left. It might have been understated...

Posted by: Guvner | Sep 11, 2008 5:34:01 PM

But apparently Charlie is Palin's fool. BTW, Obama is definitely more experienced than Palin.

Posted by: obamamama | Sep 11, 2008 5:34:02 PM

Gibson, has was not accurate when he quoted this and stated Palin said this:

"Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God." Are we fighting a holy war?"

When in fact she said this:

"Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God...That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan".

The Obama team is on the ball!!! I bet they were just waiting for the first words so that they could offer their own spin before anyone else got to it.

Posted by: Frank | Sep 11, 2008 5:34:32 PM

Arrogant, arrogant, arrogant.
