Inside Look at the Ohio Battleground
October 07, 2008 5:47 PM
ABC's Stu Schutzman blogs from the World News Battleground Bus Tour in Ohio:
Great sunrise this morning, even more impressive thru the tinted windows on the right side of the bus as we headed north up the interstate toward Wapakoneta, Ohio. No better example of small town America than Wapakoneta, population about 9,000. We spent about an hour in the Cloud Nine Coffee Shop talking politics and the economy with some local business owners, to a person very concerned about the future. After scones and coffee which were every bit as good as the conversation, we were back on the bus en route to Bowling Green, Ohio.
As we were town we couldn't miss a bizarre oval like structure seemingly growing out of the ground. Turns out it was designed to look like the moon, what better symbol for a museum dedicated to Wapakoneta native, Neal Armstrong, first man on the moon. And then back on I-75 north.
Just outside Bowling Green, we stopped to gawk at Ohio's first wind power farm. Four enormous wind turbines rise more than 250 feet above the corn and wheat fields. The blades automatically rotate to find the the best wind conditions -- it's an awesome sigh which makes you feel very small. The farm provides electricity for about 3000 households and was intended to spur interest in alternative energy sources -- certainly got our attention.
The bus is finally settled in a cozy parking lot at Bowling Green State University where Charlie anchors World News and the 2nd presidential debate. The battle for Ohio is being waged in all the small towns and campuses that dot the map of this heartland state.

Is this really newsworthy when our country is in real economic and quality of life decline. Is there any chance you could report on something that actually affects Americans lives?

CMSgt Gary Preston:
I guess my life in Bowling Green doesn't count. You're right. It's not like we're feeling any of that economic meltdown everyone is talking about. Skipped right over Wood County. Thank goodness!

Interestingly, the 'focus group' was chosen by the local director of the very Republican Chamber of Commerce.
This would be the same Chamber that denied non-voting membership to the local Dem club.
So, did *anyone* out there in the viewing audiance find it odd that *all* the members of this 'focus group' were Republicans?
This makes ABC sound like another 'fair and balanced' network I *don't* watch.
Just so the world knows, yes, Charlie, there *are* Democrats in Wapakoneta--and a Santa Claus.

Funny, the people that Charlie Gibson talked to seemed to be Obama and McCain supporters. If you would have watched you might have seen a very interesting report. Gosh, we wouldn't want anyone to notice that the people in our hometown actually can speak their own minds now would we?
Just so the world knows, yes Charlie, there *are* people in Wapakoneta who appreciate the time you took to come here and check the pulse of Middle America.
And Charlie, there *are* Republicans in Wapakoneta and we don't whine about everything that doesn't go exactly our way!

Three are currently registered as Republicans with the BOE, with straight R voting records. One Democrat, as of last primary. It would seem that we might want to find some Undeclareds to speak to this issue. Hardly, "fair and balanced"--oh, wait, uh--that follows that pattern.
