Gibson Interviews McCain

October 09, 2008 2:11 PM

Abc_mccain_gibson_081009_main ABC's Tom Nagorski from Indiana:

It can get tough remembering where you are on a bus tour (Bowling Green, OH yesterday morning; Indianapolis in the afternoon; Northbrook, IL at night; up into Wisconsin early today) but there was no doubt we'd come to the right place as we turned a corner in downtown Milwaukee this morning. There was a bus the size of ours, parked outside the Pfister Hotel. "McCain-Palin '08," it said on the side. Senator McCain and Governor Palin were there, and within the hour the Senator hopped on the OTHER bus (i.e., ours) for an interview with Charlie Gibson.

Senator McCain bristles at the suggestion that he is somehow weaker than his opponent when it comes to the economy (Sen Obama's "been all over the place on all of his tax proposals. I have the experience and the knowledge and the judgment to make the right decisions…"); he calls the current global credit crisis "in many ways…the same situation we faced during the Great Depression"; and he certainly believes attacking Senator Obama's past -- including his relationship with the bomber-turned-academic Bill Ayers is fair game.

Charlie: "You don't think he's been thoroughly vetted, having gone through all the primaries and all the campaigning, running for president as long as you have?  Two years?"

McCain: "No, actually I don't.  In fact, Senator Clinton in their debates said that the American people didn’t know enough about him, including his relationship with Mr. Ayers.  That’s what she said.  And I agree with that.  He said he was a guy in the neighborhood.  We know that’s not true.  He said – he wrote down a piece of paper that he would take public financing for his presidential campaign if I would.  He betrayed the trust of the American people there."

It's hard to know how this plays out there; we do know -- from voters we've met along the way -- that this isn't a question we've heard raised much, on the road.

the question McCain poses is only raised by right wing pundits and people who are scared that if they don't vote Republican they aren't conforming to their societal norm.

the rest of us have questions about the economy and war.

Ayers and Obama served on the Walter H. Annenberg foundation.

Annenberg is a republican who endorsed John McCain and as such John McCain is palling with terrorist..

What I want to hear from McCain is some specific follow-up to his often repeated claims that he has all the answers to all our problems. For instance, he says he knows "exactly" how to find Bin Laden. He also knows just what to do to rescue our economy, save Social Security, fix our broken health care and education systems - and all at the same time!!

How is it that he's been in the deliberative body of our Congress all this time and shared none of his answers with us?

(Hint: I think he's not being 100% honest with us about his capabilities AND/OR he's delusional.)

Obama has said he will keep Paulson the Secretary of the Treasury that was asleep at the helm all these years!!!! Good choice Obama!

Posted by: Mike | Oct 9, 2008 3:01:54 PM

The Democrats put money into ACORN in the Fannie Mac bill.....dishonest. They really want OBAMA to win and using our taxpayers money to get him elected NOW.

Posted by: Ann | Oct 9, 2008 3:04:02 PM

You may be right, Paul. I wouldn't be a good idea to have the repubs in sewer maintenance. They would make sure the oil and bank execs have the best working sewage system by having all their waste flow into the middle and lower class family's toliets. They are usually left cleaning up their other crap, why not the real thing.

Liberati, why don't you read about the issue and listen to Gibson's interview with Obama about Ayres yesterday. What else do you expect. Just vote for Mccain because Obama does not need the likes of you.

Ann,

Your knowledge is a GOP talking point summary. Do you read other sources or simply watch Fox News?

People in America are worried about their jobs and 401ks, not rumor and innuendo.

Both candidates know some unsavory characters.

Posted by: Knowledge is Good | Oct 9, 2008 3:07:24 PM

I see ABC is fighting Fox for the single digit IQ demographic. Such people believe 'Old man yells at cloud' and the woman who proves 'you don't have to be blond to act like one' make the best governing team. Welcome to the 21st Century Bangladesh, although it will still be called the USA (49 States since the 'second dude' wants Alaskan Independence, but secessionism is not treason, much). If this country elects McShame/Pallid the country will get exactly what it deserves!

To paraphrase George Will, the biggest campaign mailer on behalf of Barack Obama will be American's quarterly 401k statements.

The rest is just noise.

This whole Bill Ayers thing is a non-story. All it takes is elementary investigation skills on the Internet to know that Ayers' wife left that law firm in 1988. And Michelle Obama joined that law firm in 1988. So they've established this great friendship within a few months? Remember, Michelle Obama didn't join until after she graduated law school, so it had to be a few months, at best.

Oh, and watch this: Barack Obama was a summer associate with that same firm! Uh-Oh! The only problem, though, is that he joined as a summer associate in 1989! Remember, Ayers' wife left the firm in 1988!

So, this is merely a distraction and a feeble attempt to Swiftboat someone. The problem is that a 12 year-old child can debunk it.

Charlie, it's your duty as an American with the power to inform the masses to try and find out everything you can about the candidates, good or bad and then present that to the public.

If you don't completely vet a candidate you will be doing your country a disservice.

Posted by: Noz | Oct 9, 2008 3:25:09 PM

Risky, erratic, and uncertain is what Obama calls helping out the home owners....he knows it will not work. He knew that the surge in Iraq would not work and waved the white flag of surrender. Go away Obama. America take back your country and get busy with the repairs.

Posted by: Ann | Oct 9, 2008 3:27:37 PM

Obama/Biden vs McCain/Palin, what if things were switched around?.....think about it.

Would the country's collective point of view be different?

Ponder the following:

What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including
a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee?

What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe
disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while
he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain
killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five?
(The Keating Five were five United States Se nators accused of corruption
in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings
and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?
What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included
disc ipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many
occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality,
do you really believe the election numbers would b e as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes
positive qua lities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in
another when there is a color difference.

justsayin... let me tell you something bub. the whole 401 k idea was REAGANOMICS...IT DOESNT WORK!!

it was sold to the american public as a sorry excuse for proper personal savings in a bank ,just so companies who offer it to their employees can have ANOTHER tax loophole (among other incentives that are GREAT for the company providing the 401k).

unfortunately for the avg employee , the lions share of the gratification for 401k plans goes to the businesses who provide it ,not the employee.

i feel sorry for people who bought into the 401k myth , but its time for that chapter of american gullibility to end .

just another republican bred lie that was force fed to the american public .

george will is a joke too, that guy needs to go actually work in the us job market for a few years for $12-15/hr before he shoots off his ostentatious pretentious non-objective trap.

Posted by: bah | Oct 9, 2008 3:28:31 PM

Obama will win by landslide because Mccain has no credible solutions to the challenges and the WHOLE WORLD love Obama to lead

Posted by: pana | Oct 9, 2008 3:32:40 PM

rayk I guess then Mccain would be too because Mrs. Annenberg just endorsed him and they have been friends for yrs. and Annenbergs Husband picked Ayers to be on the Board he served on with Obama so if we're playing the guilt by association the so is Mccain and Reagan they are both friends with the Annenebrgs and they pick Ayers

Posted by: richardcranium1 | Oct 9, 2008 3:34:05 PM

Bush/McCain killed 4000 US citizen for nothing but a lie. Ayers killed 0 . McShame has no cain...and no brain. He is an angry ambitious old senilator.
