Race & The Vote (Cont'd)
October 15, 2008 11:46 AM
We thought our piece on this issue pretty well debunked the so-called "Bradley Effect" last night, but whether people lie to pollsters or not doesn't mean there isn't a great deal of latent racism surrounding this presidential campaign. The following opinions were given to the New York Times' Adam Nossiter:
"He (Obama) is neither-nor. He's other. It's in the Bible. Come as one. Don't create other breeds." -- Ricky Thompson, Mobile, AL
"I would think of him as I would of another of mixed race. God taught the children of Israel not to intermarry. You should be proud of what you are, and not intermarry." - Glnn Reynolds, Martinsdale, VA
"He's going to tear up the rose bushes and plant a watermelon patch." -- James Halsey, Mobile, AL
"I've always been against the blacks," says Bud Rowell -- though he says that now that he has three biracial grandchildren he has "found out they were human beings, too." -- Citronelle, AL
If people are willing to express such opinions for the record, one can infer that a great many more harbor similar feelings -- and keep these to themselves.

I've just read an excerpt from Michelle Obama's Princton Thesis, and frankly,,,,,,it's quite disturbing. --- I can say this because as a senior in high school, I was bussed from my neighborhood school to one in the inner city, "with lots of problems" as a means to counter that type of thought process. -- Michelle Obama's intellectually refined racism should give all
Americans pause for deep concern.
Now maybe she's changed, but she sure sounds like someone with an axe to
grind with America . Will the press let Michelle get a free pass over her obviously
racist comment about American whites? I am sure that it will.

Unfortunately, most of us have worked with "affirmative action" blacks who lied about their employment qualifications and if given the job, were unable to do it properly and tried to blame others for their failures. It is hard to get past this kind of prejudice and try to be convinced that someone like Obama, who pulled all sorts of dirty tricks to get where he is, would really be able to do the job of POTUS.

In her senior thesis at Princeton , Michele Obama, the wife of Barack Obama stated that America was a nation founded on 'crime and hatred'.
Moreover, she stated that whites in America were 'ineradicably racist'.
The 1985 thesis, titled 'Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community' was written under her maiden name, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson.
Michelle Obama stated in her thesis that to 'Whites at Princeton , it often seems as if, to them, she will always be Black first...' However, it was reported by a fellow black classmate, 'If those 'Whites at Princeton ' really saw Michelle as one who always would 'be Black first,' it seems that she gave them that impression'.
Most alarming is Michele Obama's use of the terms 'separationist' and 'integrationist' when describing the views of black people.
Mrs. Obama clearly identifies herself with a 'separationist' view of race.
'By actually working with the Black lower class or within their communities as a result of their ideologies, a separationist may better understand the desperation of their situation and feel more hopeless about a resolution as opposed to an integrationist who is ignorant to their plight.'
Obama writes that the path she chose by attending Princeton would likely lead to her 'further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant.'
Michele Obama clearly has a chip on her shoulder.

You call those remarks "latent" racism? I think they are all nakedly racist remarks.
I've always wondered if conservative Christians in this country who harbor racism have ever read beyond the Old Testament. The couple of quotes above have confirmed my suspicion.

What racist comment about American whites?
You say you just read them, well what are they?
Posted by: JR | Oct 15, 2008 12:05:03 PM
Planewizard, I don't see anything "racist" about those comments, they were her observations at the time or do you somehow see those as the same as

Its sad to think that in today's world people are still so ignorant of the facts. As a white person, I can only say that these 'white' folks are a true emabrrassment to the entire nation.

Racism is alive and kicking. But, I think even some racist voters will vote for Obama. This economy is hurting everyone. I think self-preservation trumps racist views. It won't be all, but it will be enough to tip the scales to the Democrats. I also think many more who are tired of racism, will vote for Obama.

The most religious parts of the country also seem to be the most racist. I hope some of these folks can stop the cycle of racism and find the true definition of their faith.

Lets hear from the other side also.
Lets start with Obama, His view on Aids. "Obama has said he would work to prevent HIV transmission through sex education and testing in minority communities." There are poor white communities that have a major aids problem, no need to test them.
I was called a racist because I was not voting for Obama.
Mr Obama has taken Race Relations Back 20 years. He has pitted people against people. Group against Group. American against American.
I have heard more detrimental statements from People of the African American than from anyone else.
I fear walking through neigborhhoods now, that I have my entire life.
That is acceptable and it is acceptable that almost all blacks are voting for a Black man, because he is black.
Of course the votes may be for the reason of the reparations they say they were promised.

Planewizard,
I read Michelle Obama's thesis. That was her perspective 20+ years ago. Don't you remember your high school and college years. Everyone had their own cliques. In this case; Princeton... everyone stuck with their own kind. She was uncomfortable and felt as if she didn't belong.
You conservatives can't fault her for that.
People forget that Obama is HALF WHITE and raised by the white half of his family.
Your guy McCain is down in EVERY poll and EVERY swing state poll. I guess the GOP want to use to fear tactics. Not this year. The Dems finally nominated a fighter.
Posted by: Vanessa | Oct 15, 2008 12:17:17 PM
this is done.
the only people who race really mean that much to ...in any kind of negative way
are the people who are older than 65 and the people who have the mentality and or education of a 7th grade drop out.
Most of America laughs at those people for giving this any weight...
in our minds...
it's fun y and we feel bad for those people who are trapped in a mindset
and wonder if they think the world is flat...
and that dinosaurs are a creation of the "liberal media".
stupid got us GW and Cheney
and stupid is trying to get us McCain Palin.

I think most people's stereotypes of race are really based on economic and education disparities. Race is just an easy way to explain away our problems.
I grew up in an affluent Republican suburb and I'll vote for Obama without hesitation. I don't think the Republican policies of deregulation have served this country well.
Posted by: hope springs | Oct 15, 2008 12:21:15 PM
hIn my opinion if Mr. Obama is elected, I see the race issue growing wider that it has been in a long time. Mr Obama and his wife will not be able to keep the African-Americans and whites both happy at the same time. Any movement in either direction as shown favoritism.
Posted by: rpgtank | Oct 15, 2008 12:24:14 PM
Mack, I'll never change your mind, but I think there are many people who do understand. Poverty and ignorance breed crime. If you think the education we provide to inner city students is on par with the students in affluent suburbs, then there is no point trying to engage. It's not a race issue, it's a poverty issue.
I've seen your posts before and they aren't terribly elegant or compelling so don't feel like you need to respond. I already know where you stand.

This is nothing but another article to pray on white guilt just a little bit more. obama wants you to feel racist if you don't vote for him. So to get the white people that are McCain supporters on his side he wants them to feel racist. Just another dirty trick playing with peoples emotions.
Posted by: mogo | Oct 15, 2008 12:50:49 PM
mogo, That's so silly. If you feel guilt that's your issue. Vote for the candidate you think will do the best job. The Republicans have brought us eight years of bad policy, so for me it's Obama. If I need validation, then I'll ask someone I love for a hug.
Posted by: guilt free | Oct 15, 2008 12:54:18 PM
guilt free...silly to the naive.
Posted by: mogo | Oct 15, 2008 12:56:50 PM
mogo, Someday you'll become a Jedi. Think for yourself and let the force guide you. Nobody can make you feel something except you.

There has not been much evidence of a Bradley effect in elections lately. This year there could well be a "reverse" Bradley Effect: people who plan to vote for Obama but do not want to admit it to their GOP friends.
