Should Gwen Ifill Step Aside as VP Debate Moderator?

October 01, 2008 6:23 PM

With one day to go till the Palin, Biden face off...there's news about the debate's moderator Gwen Ifill.  The PBS journalist is working a book titled "Breakthrough:  Politics and Race in the Age of Obama".  ABC's Teddy Davis and Matt Jaffe report that the McCain camp is 'sowing doubts' about how the author of a book featuring Obama can be objective.  "I think that Gwen Ifill is a professional and I think she will do a totally objective job because she is a highly respected professional," said McCain to Fox News. "Does this help that she has written a book that is favorable to Sen. Obama? Probably not. But I have confidence that Gwen Ifill will do a professional job."  Agree?

If she is biased, yes she should step aside. (obviously she is biased)

mccain says he has no problem with her

but lets get something straight

the book was made public before she was selected as the moderator

both campaigns must accept the moderator for all debates

so this leaves you with two acceptable answers

1. the mccain camp didnt do their homework and this displays how inept they are

2. they knew and didnt really care, but now they can use this as a scapegoat issue if palin does terribly

We shall see. The rest of the media is in the tank for Obama so I would be hard to find someone who was not biased.

Oh how about Opera?

Ifill has a financial interest in the outcome of the election. If Obama is elected, she will sell more books. She has spent hours interviewing the Obamas for her book. There is a clear conflict of interest and she should never have accepted the job.

Most of the media, including Ifill, is in the tank for Obama in this election, but isn't there a point at which it's too blatant?

Once again a MSM member is caught advocating for a specific canidate and questions about her objectivity are raised. She claims she will be objective, but how can you really trust her? Here its the appearance that counts not her professionalism. Iflil should step down as the moderator so there is no question about her bias.

She did not make the book public before the campaigns agreed to her being the moderator. She drools all over Obama, while she could not hide her contempt and hatred for Sarah Palin while covering the Republican National Convention (at first I thought she was drunk, but I think she was just filled with hate for a woman who dared to question the One).

Whoever picked her obviously did this on purpose. Very nasty, very mean-spirited. You should have someone up there who is fair and not biased!

I think it is very telling that none of the "major news networks" can even bring themselves to put the story of Ifill's conflict up on their websites. What happened to fact checking and holding all of our politicians (regardless of their party)accountable? Journalistic news, and the investigative news reporting of the Watergate era is DEAD!

no

same team
same tactics

they will find anyway possible to excuse her ineptness.

I don't think this is an issue worthy of any discussion but because the McCain camp has been in the business of distracting from the real issues, I prefer that Gwen steps aside so that her asking the questions doesn't become the big news if Palin happens not to do well.

Posted by: frosty | Oct 1, 2008 6:51:46 PM

I think that the moderator can be crucial to the success of the debates through his or her approach to the candidates. If the moderator is biased, it would be very difficult to be fair. Since Gwen has a bias, she should step aside for a moderator who has not publically embraced a presidential candidate.

Same ol BS to try and get a certain one
elected!!!!!! we will soon be a second
world country. It'a shame.........

I've always liked Gwen Ifill. She delivers the news and provides commentary that is intelligent and well balanced. That said, with this book, she has shown her private preferences in this election and should step aside like any good judge with a conflict of interest.

The media is so pro Hussein....she's got a book coming out....I think that she shoudl step down and let someone who is a more professional acting moderator step in....let's play fair.

Of course, if Palin can just answer the questions straight forward, she should have no trouble out shining 'lost Joe'.

Posted by: Evelyn in Phoenix | Oct 1, 2008 6:57:11 PM

She hasn't even written the small chapter on Barack yet. But she apparently wrote a long and glowing chapter on Colin Powell. So which "tank" does that put her in?

Posted by: Derek | Oct 1, 2008 6:59:25 PM

They should replace her with Olberman The Countdown man. Obama's supporters are just too strong - they are everywhere. It still doesn't change that Obama is very fake.

Posted by: young_voter | Oct 1, 2008 6:59:59 PM

I really think she can be objective and I'm a McCain/Palin supporter. We shall see tomorrow night.

I agree with the last comment....

Posted by: Joey | Oct 1, 2008 7:05:49 PM

She should step out as moderator. She has probably already briefed Biden on all the questions to make him look better. Surely there is somebody else that can do this job.

Posted by: carolyn | Oct 1, 2008 7:06:55 PM

I guess Brokow should remove himself from being moderator, as he has said McCain is an ICON!
