A List of Famed Businesses Born During Recessions

November 20, 2008 2:29 PM

The research company INSIDECRM has pulled together an interesting list given these not so rosy economic times.  While so many companies will retract and so many other innovative ideas will die on the vine...they have compiled a list of brand names that actually got their start in the abysmal financial downticks of yesteryear.  Perhaps there is a pattern of sorts here for today's entrepreneurs?  Here is some of list of companies...

General Electric was established by Thomas Edison in the wake of the Panic of 1873.

Hewlett-Packard, the largest technology company in the world, was born in a a garage during the Great Depression.

Hyatt Corp, IHOP, and The Jim Henson Company all got their start during the recession of 1958.  It's the same year fledgling Burger King introduced its "Whopper".

LexisNexis, FedEx launched during the oil crisis years of the early 1970's.

CNN charged out of the gate in the not so good year of 1980.

Wikipedia booted up in 2001.  Soon, 9/11 would see the downfall of so many dotcom firms.
