Are You Cutting Back This Christmas?

November 19, 2008 1:25 PM

Nothing like a blog to break bad news that you already know.  We got some dismal news from our polling unit this morning regarding holiday shopping this year. 51 percent of Americans say they will be spending less this season.  Yes, there is a pretty solid connection between what someone tells a pollster and what they end up doing at the mall in a couple of weeks.  This is the biggest pullback from consumers since the 1991 recession.  The one bright spot for the shopper -- deals.  Retailers are already plying anyone who'll walk into the store or click on their site with deep discounts.  Desperate times call for desperate measures.  One analyst sees as many as 20 percent of the retailers at your local mall going out of business in the near future.

So, are you pulling back this year?

A follow up on earlier quote. The position we find ourselves in today is because of selfishness and greed. This country is getting a huge wake up call to go back to their first love and that is Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Put your trust in him and not in the temporary pleasures of this life. Seek for the eternal which last forever. Joy, love, peace that this world cannot give you. I am blessed with the richness and fullness of God.

My wife's job will be eliminated next year as her company is absorbed by another. My company has just announced another round of layoffs; no word on how my department will be affected.

We will give each other inexpensive gifts, but retailers will not be extracting any significant sums from our pockets. The mortgage, gas, utilities, and food take precedence

We'll stay at home, light a candle against despair, and contemplate our vast fortune -- a portfolio of love, laughter, friendship and joy that sees us through good times and bad.

And those investments never depreciate.
