Pakistan Will Help India With Investigation
November 28, 2008 7:01 AM
By Habibullah Khan, ABC News Producer Islamabad
As news of the coordinated terrorist attacks in Mumbai spread, Pakistanis, like people around the world, closely watched as the events unfolded on their television screens.
And then, as everyone was expecting, the finger of blame started pointing towards Pakistan.
The Pakistani government was swift to condemn the gruesome attacks. Both the president and the prime minister called Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to condemn the violence, and they assured him of their cooperation with the investigation to follow.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said that "the government will cooperate with India in exposing and apprehending the culprits and the masterminds behind the attack."
The chief of Pakistan's powerful spy agency, ISI, is headed to India to help with the investigations after a request from the Indian government. Many here, however, see the move as a sign of weakness and say Pakistan should avoid such involvement.
After all the accusations, Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani met this morning to discuss the situation.
The terrorist incident came as both countries were inching toward a broader dialogue to ease tensions between the two countries. In a recent interaction with Indian media, Zardari proposed a no-first-nuclear-strike agreement and said the region must be denuclearized.
Pakistan wants to carry forward the peace process and help India with the the investigation but "not at the cost of our dignity," said Marvi Memon, a member of Pakistan's national assembly.
Pakistan's foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who was in India before the Mumbai incident on a peace initiative, appealed for people "not to politicize" the incident and said "both countries face a common enemy which is terrorisn and they must fight it."
However, tensions remain high on both sides of the border, and the blame game between the two countries has raised its ugly head once again.
"Whenever we start making headway in our relationship, the evil hand strikes and takes us back to 1947," Junaid Ali, a businessman from Islamabad, told ABC News, referring to the bloody partition of the British Indian empire.

will help india, but "not at the cost of our dignity". wow.... i wish the rest of the civilized world would just decide to make the whole middle east a parking lot.

Maybe the Mumbai terrorist attacks were meant to counteract improved relations between Pakistan and India. Terrorism thrives on not only fear, but in creating isolation. One can only speculate.

I m sorry but i have never met one hindu in my life who has a good word for Pakistan. India is a terrorist country, just like a few others.

If India and Pakistan can cooperate, why cannot the USA and Iran? Egos be damed. If by talking, one life is saved, go for it and ignore the neocoms like Rush, Hannity, Gibson.

To the poster who said India is a terrorist country, go live a cave with Bin Laden, then you'll know where the mother of terrorism sits. Smack dab in the Mideast idiot. India is our ally. India needs our help, not our blind eye. And for Pakistan to help India would actually be a miracle, since they teach every school child that India never existed and has nothing. You think such a hate mongering nation will actually help at a time like this? It's a big joke. I hope millions of Indians come out and protest against the Mumbai attacks. It's the only way to get government and defense serious about it.

who actually believes in this orchestrated war on terror?? wake up people!! oh my bad... ur already brain dead...

Maybe now the new administartion will wake up and understand wht the world is up against. Unconditional discusions with terrorist enablers isn't going to do any good. They only understand extinction. Question is, will it become us or them who ends up becoming extinct?

bhuddaflii, what are you talkin about?

Why is Pakistan helping India? I will tell you why. The will create false leads since they are behind it. The Indian government needs to send a missile to Pakistan as a threat. I am Indian and this government will not do a damn thing with Singh and S. Gandhi running the show. We must launch a missile against these useless Muslims.

Urma: "..since they teach every school child that India never existed and has nothing..". Urma, which school did you go to? one that teaches hatred against Muslims and Pakistan?
Unfortunately its people like you and 'Sanji' who are harbingers of war and hatred. Like minded people as yourselves are ones who go kill innocent muslims, as in Gujrat and support decades long genocide of Kashmiris. Comments from 'Suleiman' don't help either.
I think its time people stopped blaming nations and religions based on the action of a few mindless criminals! We should stand united against terrorism irrespective of where it takes place and not condemn it ONLY when its on your own turf!

they are like the mob, wish they would just kill each other

urma, dont be silly. Bin Laden is not the mother of terrorists. Actually the mother of terrorists would be considered the jews. Al Qaida actually adopted terror tactics used by the jews. The irgun group (which is considered a terrorist organization) actually were the ones responsible behind the King David Hotel bombing in Jerusalem. *GASP* a jew?!
Your lame

India is in the Middle East now? Wow! That was a swift tectonic plate displacement. When did it move?

urma is lame: the Jews were fighting extermination by the Germans and the complicite attitude of the British empire which refused to honor their own words in the Balfour declaration (they got their mandate on the original Palestine -ie: Irak, Sinai, Israel, Syria, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordanian Palestine- from the League of Nations as well as the acceptance of their "protectorate" by the arabs, specifically because of their engagement to re-create a national home for the Jews in the portion of Palestine covered by the antique kingdoms of Judea and Israel, so both Arab and European countries would be rid of the Jewish "problem"). Furthemore, the Jews warned the British in advance so they would evacuate the hotel. When has an islamic terrorist group warned so lives could be saved? NEVER! They, on the contrary, consider mass murder their weapon of choice. Al Qaida is a group of mass murdering terrorists: no if, and, or but
