The White House Butler
November 07, 2008 1:30 PM
So much has been said about the history made this week -- from so many angles, and so many voices. But we were deeply moved by Wil Haygood's long piece in the Washington Post about Eugene Allen, a black man who served eight presidents in a thirty-four-year career at the White House. Stay for the wrenching end to the piece. Well done, Mr. Haygood. Here it is.

It makes me think of Jesse Jackson crying on Tuesday. He was with Dr. King when he was shot but Jesse got to the promised land.

A very moving story. Hoping that he makes it to the white house to see the Obamas.
My condolances to him and his family.

What a touching story. Tears are still rolling down my cheeks. I didn't foreee
the end. May your wife rest in peace.
I know you will be going back to the White House and it won't be to serve anyone. I know they will be honored to
serve you. God bless You?

I consider myself to be a pretty jaded person, but this one made me cry. What a history and what a true man in every sense of the world. If President-Elect Obama's staff has not set up the invitation to the inauguration and invitation to sleep in the Lincoln Bedroom, they certainly would be well served in doing so. May God bless your beautiful wife and your entire family.

What a sweet love story, not just of a man and woman, but of a very honorable man and his very long, loyal service to so many Presidents. God Bless You, Dear Mr. Allen, and may your sweet wife rest in peace! I'm so sorry she was not by your side as our country elected Senator Obama to be our 44th President; but I do believe she is looking down upon us and sharing our joy.

Mr. Obama, you are a renter there. The Butler will stay after you leave. Like him, Sir, you work for us and are but a tenant. He works there and stays after you are gone. Good help is so hard to find.

Mr. Allen, please write a book, I would love to see your book made into a movie... just to see what it's like in the White House, and what it's like serving American Royalty...Congratulations, to all of your hard work, and dedication!
