Upset Over Sarah Palin's Turkey Video

November 21, 2008 5:59 PM

Abc_abc_palin_turkey_081121_220x146 ABC's Lisa Stark from Washington:

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's botched pardon of a Thanksgiving turkey, has now caught the attention of an animal rights group.  Let's be fair, Palin, the former Republican Vice Presidential nominee, did successfully pardon a Thanksgiving turkey at a farm in Wasilla, Alaska.  The problem was what came next. Palin stopped to talk to the media after saving the turkey's life –- but the interview was conducted right in front of the slaughterhouse.  So as Palin talked, a worker appeared to be slaughtering turkeys in the background.

Circulated across the internet, the video has prompted groans, sighs and chuckles.  But it also provided an opening for one animal rights group to push it agenda.  In a press release today, Farm Sanctuary is pointing out that "more than 45 million turkeys suffer this very same fate for Thanksgiving every year."  The group's national shelter director, Susie Coston, said in a statement, "The interview should be an eye opener for the millions of Americans who celebrate Thanksgiving."  It noted the group has been rescuing turkeys for more than 23 years, and finds them to be social, sensitive creatures.

Farm Sanctuary is using the moment to urge Americans to give up the bird, and celebrate a vegetarian Thanksgiving.  No word on what Palin, who is an avid hunter, will have on her holiday table.

Social and sensitive? I like mine tender, warm and juicy.

Oh leave the lady alone.

Isn't it enough she lost.

She is not the first turkey killer I know.

I kill a few myself.

God ordered us to eat animals as the Bible says.

So leave Sarah alone.

There has got to be a faster way to kill a turkey! That guy took forever! I don't know what was worse, listening to Palin go on like the idiot that she is (turkeys are smarter) or watching that poor turkey die a very slow death.

What an absolute imbecile she is to be interviewed in front of the slaughter of a turkey just after the pardon of another. I was horrified once I realized what was going on behind her.
Media - please stop providing air-time for this air-head.

If you listen to the entire interview - I saw it on MSNBC last night - the reporter asks her what her family Thanksgiving dinner will look like, and she says they'll have turkey. Also, the reporter DID ask Gov. Palin if she knew they'd be doing the interview in front of the slaughter tables, and she said, "No worries!" This woman is an absolute IDIOT. No one in their right mind would have done an interview while someone in the background slaughters an animal. I'm not one of the anti-turkey people, but jeez, this interview was horrendous from start to finish!

Right up her alley, this is the nutcase she is....

Posted by: NH voter | Nov 21, 2008 6:30:54 PM

what on earth is the big deal. I LMAO at the irony of what she was saying about the tough political race and the turkey getting its neck rung.

This is not a big deal.

I bet the fools that are horrified over this are the same ones who find abortion to be acceptable.

She shoots moose and photographs herself with a gun and the carcass.

What is a dead turkey compared to that?

You vegetarians should just stop whinning and leave Sarah alone.

It is no one's fault that you hate meat. the rest of us love it and we are with God on this one.

Doesn't bother a farm gal like Palin or any other farm folk. Only naive city people who think turkeys come from a supermarket might be disturbed. Get real on real life. Our life depends on the death of some living creature. Even that salad or raw apple has living cells that are killed in our stomachs.

I defer to no one in despising Sarah Palin for myriad reasons.

But maybe the woman simply isn't squeamish and hypocritical about eating meat -- and doesn't care about the tender feelings of people who are.

I'm an omnivore, but I respect many of the animal-rights, anti-meat folks because they live by their principles. The hunters and farmers I know are upfront about killing animals for food and are willing to do the dirty work themselves. I can respect that, too.

The people I can't respect are those who criticize hunters and farmers for killing animals but then eat meat and wear leather. And who try to pretend that their desire to eat meat doesn't require the killing and dismemberment of animals.

Who cares about a turkey being killed, but to hold an interview in front of the slaughter of turkey's just shows Palin's lack of intelligence.

She even mentions the possibility of criticism, what a total "Maroon".

proof that it is God's will that this woman has nothing to do with the leadership of the republican party... or MAYBE, God is up there right now with George Carlin having a BLAST showing the world the republicans are complete idiots

Leave Sarah, alone. Liberals, where is short PC mantra about also respecting the mentally chanllenged? Even though she is an idiot, she deserves love and respect like anyone else.

Good Grief! Turkeys are for eating not pardoning! Get a life!

... I agree. If people didn't eat turkeys they would never have life at all!

YOU GUYS MAKE ME PUKE
YOUR SICKENING LOVE FOR OBAMA HAS LED TO THIS OBSESSION WITH ALL NEGATIVES ABOUT PALIN..
TURKEYS GET SLAUGHTERED BEFORE THEY END UP ON YOUR NICE FLOWERY THANKSGIVING PARTIES.
THOSE FOLKS ARE REALISTIC-
YOU ARE NOT-
EVERONE OF THOSE ANIMALS IN THE GROCERY STORES GET SLAUGHTERED.

Posted by: TJ, THE CLINTONITE | Nov 21, 2008 7:17:02 PM

I'm all for animal rights. I believe strongly that animals should not be abused, etc., BUT Turkeys are farmed to be used as food, not just for Thanksgiving (think sandwiches at your local deli). If the activists want change, they'll have to think about more than just this one Holiday.

While the video was poorly thought out, I can't buy into "saving the turkeys". It's one tradition that I hope they don't tamper with.

Posted by: HeidiL | Nov 21, 2008 7:20:40 PM

I just bet the media set it up to stop her at that particular point on the farm. Why not just shoot a close up. They wanted the back drop of the slaughtering. As far as killing the turkeys, what's the big deal. That's why we breed them. The activist need to get a life! Imagine showing up in the homeless shelter on Thanksgiving and giving those poor people a few carrots! It's so ridiculous.

I am from a hunting background. It was drilled into me to respect animals & that hunters should make a "clean kill"--not make the animal suffer at all.

That bird behind Palin died a slow death. Palin is disgusting in that she doesn't care how an animal suffers or who sees it suffering. I find her a disgusting, moronic person-- whether she's Republican or Democrat doesn't matter.

Yes I eat turkey, but come on here! Do you really need the kiddies watching that at age 5? Maybe it's normal in Alaska or on the farm, but try explaining it to some New York tot. It's just one more instance of insensitive, imbecilic behavior from a half-rate politician without the sense to consign herself to the dustbin of history where she belongs. Now I have to go calm down my visiting 4 year old niece after she peeked onto the computer the older kids were watching that mess on. Thanks a lot Sarah
