VA Gov. Tim Kaine Won't Leave His Post to Serve in Obama Administration
November 12, 2008 3:39 PM
ABC News' Jay Shaylor reports: Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine says he will not be joining the Obama administration.
"I took an oath to be here for my whole term," Kaine told reporters today. "I've actually communicated that to the president-elect already."
Sources tell ABC News Kaine expressed his feelings directly to the president-elect during a phone conversation over the weekend. During the call, Kaine told Obama he will finish his term as governor and will not leave his executive office in Richmond for a Cabinet-level post in Washington.
Speculation recently swirled in political circles Kaine might be tapped as attorney general.
Virginia's governor is closely linked to Obama politically. He was on the president-elect's short list of potential vice presidential candidates, served as a national co-chair for Obama's campaign, and was the first governor to endorse the Illinois senator during the Democratic primaries. Obama won Virginia on Election Day, the first Democrat to do so since Lyndon Johnson in 1964; Kaine is widely credited with helping Obama turn the previously red state blue.
Sources tell ABC News Kaine first told Obama several months ago he would not be interested in leaving his gubernatorial term early to join a future Cabinet and that he simply restated his earlier intentions with the president-elect during this weekend's call.
Delacey Skinner, Kaine's communications director, confirmed for ABC News that the governor and Obama spoke over the weekend and that Kaine reiterated his plan to stay in Richmond through the end of his term.
She said Kaine was not offered a Cabinet-level position during the call.
"The governor is looking forward to working with the Obama administration, as governor of Virginia," Skinner said.

Thats good news for barack . he can prove valuable once again down the road for Barack in that state.
In a perfect world If i had it my way all the swing states governors that supported Barack would stay where they are... just to keep a finger on the pulse, And in turn Barack would see to it that their STATES gets what it want; But washington is where the action is and most welcome a chance to head there.

Whew! That's one off Obama's back. There are so many valuable people but he only has a few jobs to hand out. This is going to be one crazy game of musical chairs.

We poor less-educated do not need any jobs from Pres. 0bama. We only want the $1000 that he said he would give us if we voted for him.
It's time for him to work on cutting that check.

How come the GOP posters are the only ones that heard that?

Kaine seems too nice for Washington anyway.

I salute him. I am no fan of his policies, but I have great respect for any politician who actually has the convictions to serve in the seat that they ran for!

So far, have not been to happy with Kaine as governor. Warner was better. Kaine doe not have the business brains that Warner has.
Plus, I am not to sure about Kaine's motives anyway. If he steps down as Governor, I think the Republican Lt. Gov. will take his place. I think that is the MAJOR issue.

Good for him. Obama should have as much common decency. He was elected to serve the people of Illinois in the US Senate but begain camapaigning for POTUS as soon as he got to Washington. He did nothing but use them as a stepping stone. Something he has a history of.

Rahm Emanuel imitates Lavrenty Beria and Stalin's NKVD in proposing a forced labor camp system--the civilian defense corps:
“It's time for a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us. We propose universal civilian service for every young American. Under this plan, All Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five will be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic training, civil defense preparation and community service.
Here's how it would work. Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They'll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we're hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities' most pressing needs.”
Rahm Emanuel’s remarks about the civilian defense corps shows a blindness to a potential political cliff that fellow community organizers are about to lead Democrats over like lemmings. The danger here isn’t that the Obama administration is about to launch a 21st century Land Service program, but that a civilan draft will damage the volunteer military. And a relaunch of any kind of draft may hit the Hope-and-Changers right where they live: in the youth vote.
Let’s deal with the draft itself. What Emanuel proposes is what the nation had for over 30 years, a draft supported by both Republican and Democratic presidents. Like Emanuel’s proposal, draftees had to live in barracks and wear uniforms — but they had to do it for two years. Eventually, the draft got so unpopular that it had to go. When the voting age was lowered to 18, the writing was on the wall.
Unlike the draft, however, this time everyone will apparently serve — which will make it even less popular than the draft. Those who would volunteer to serve their country now would join the military anyway, but three months in a “civilian defense force” might blunt that desire, especially if it’s as pointless as Barack Obama’s description of it. The cost of it will be enormous, and it will end up competing for work that could be done by private-sector efforts that would actually employ younger workers rather than have them work as slaves to the government. If the term is only three months, then most of that time would go into training, leaving little time for productivity.
And how will the nation’s youth react to forced labor camps, which is exactly what Emanuel proposes? Community organizers might think of this as heaven, but the rest of the young adults between 18-25 will resent the hell out of it. After turning out the youth vote in 2008, they may find that 18-25-year-olds will discover their inner libertarians and vote out the Democrats who sold them into indentured servitude against their will.
The draft at least served real security interests of the US over its 30+ years of existence, and it wound up so unpopular that Democrats and Republicans use it to make voters nervous about the plans of the other. I doubt it would take 30 weeks for its return to reach the same depths of resentment among its targets.

Mike C: "...I have great respect for any politician who actually has the convictions to serve in the seat that they ran for!"
Not sure that's the reason. If Kaine leaves office, it opens the door for the Republicans to regain control of the state just prior to the 2010 census. I'm pretty sure that's why he's staying.
During the running mate selection time, there was a lot said here in Virginia about how bad it would be for the state Dem party if Kaine was chosen.

Yeah right. Kaine, that sorry excuse for a guvna, was not offered a position. Period. Would he have be so hooked on his "principles" had he been offered the VP post? Thank Goodness he's not getting a position ... that way we can move the country forward (remember the excessive fines? Which Kaine did not veto when it arrived on his desk, but was glad when it was overturned!)
